Steam Summer Sale 2016: Hidden Gems & Deals

Given it was my game of the year last year, I'd be foolish not to give a ringing endorsement to Life is Strange. I've played almost every recent TT game and this tops them all. If you like these types of adventure games and don't pick this one up, you are definitely missing something special. For more details on my thoughts I'll just quote my GOTY listing for it:

Maxine Caulfield. Chloe Price. Those two characters are the main reason why Life is Strange is not only my game of the year, but the best episodic adventure game I've ever played. The concept immediately intrigued me, as the idea of your decisions made in the moment not necessarily being final was unique for games of this type. I constantly found myself second-guessing my choices and wondering if I should turn back time and change things. The story has tons of twists and turns, and the endings of episode two and three are memorable and carry a lot of emotional weight. Any game that can make me care about characters to the point of feeling emotional is a winner in my book, and Life is Strange does this excellently. The character moments feel earned, and the choices for the most part feel like they matter. One way the game excels where a lot of other modern adventure games fail is in the moments in-between the big sweeping decisions. The simple conversations between friends and even enemies. The quiet moments of reflection. The atmosphere of the environments. The game is filled with characters that you want to know more about, and it delivers on giving you that information if you are willing to look for it. The final choice in this game is the most I've ever struggled with a decision in a game, and that is a credit to how well the game builds to that moment and the weight the decision carries for characters you have come to both love and hate. Life is Strange came out of nowhere for me, and it compelled me to invest as much as possible into it once I was there. I will remember a lot of what this game showed me. The characters. The relationships. The moments. The choices. And most importantly, the fucked up, awesome, beautiful, tragic, and at times heartbreaking story of Max Caulfield and Chloe Price.

Torchlight II

Maybe the first Torchlight as well, but the sequel is the better game. Plus, it has online co-op if you're into that.

Thank you guys

I bought Flywrench because of this thread, and am loving it.

Definitely putting that back in as a second recommendation. Tight controls, rewarding difficult gameplay, great fun.

Thanks for the recommendations guys!

I thought my wallet was safe from this summer sale until I found this thread...

I bought Blackwell and Aquatic adventures.

My car just bit the dust, so this will be my last purchase for this sale.

This'll double as a recommendation!

Age of Wonders 3 is the best fantasy 4X on the market, bar none. Tons of content, lots of variety, and it's just damn cool. The expansions are a great deal, adding new mechanics, campaigns, and factions, and just, in general, rounding out the gameplay.

Extremely recommended. Must play. Game of the Year 2014.

Now I'm intrigued. How's the combat? I saw some videos but I don't understand how deep is it since there's seems always to be nothing on the battlefield (like things to take cover)

Quest for Infamy

Currently on sale for USD 2.49

This Adventure game is inspired by the Quest for Glory series, and is a must play for fans of that series as it plays as a worthy sucessor to it.

Raiden 3 and 4

header.jpg

These are good ports of the games and a must for fans of traditional Shoot'em-ups.

Rayman Legends

Curently on sale for USD 14.99

One of the best 2D platformers of the past 2 gens. Some prefer Origins more, but both are good in their own way. Legends has a few online modes, but the game (and Origins) can be played with up to 4 players co-op, making them great for couch play. Their visuals are also outstanding.

Red Faction Guerrilla

Currently on sale for USD 4.99

Play out your fantasy of being a Space Asshole and breaking things with your hammer

Riptide GP2

Currently on sale for USD 3.49

The only other water jetski game on PC is Hydro Thunder Hurricane and that one is a Windows Store game. The visuals on this game are nice but its clear this was designed for mobile devices. Still it's a decent racing game all things considered.

Would also like to know this. Possitive impressions given it is an android game.

how is Shadow Blade: Reload

nobody mentioned this yet

It's a good 2D platformer, though you die in one hit. It's not a major issue since the game is built around it. It's biggest issue for me is the size of the models and areas you traverse through. To me it felt very zoomed out, but if you can look past that you may enjoy it.

Kingdom

Had this on my wishlist for awhile and decided to pick it up last night. Really beautiful pixel art. I think i took 10 screenshots just marveling at the background and water reflections. Soundtrack is superb - creates a very relaxing atmosphere. As for gameplay, this game isn't "hard" at all, though it does not hold your hand in a guiding sense. It's very satisfying figuring out what to do to progress and build up your little kingdom. As for length - I played just over 3 hours last night and got very near to beating the game before my left flank was overrun and I lost. I felt like I was close to winning, but that was only my third run in three hours, so take from that what you will. Overall I think it's well worth the $5 sale price.

What does Legends do better over Origins, and vice versa? And which is best for playing solo?

Cryptark is excellent
http://store.steampowered.com/app/344740/
$10.04/33% off
Massive derelict space ships drift through the black abyss, filled with valuable alien technology to pilfer. But the ultimate prize is the mysterious Cryptark and its advanced cargo. To find the titular vessel, you'll need to scour intel from other ships. It won't be easy.

In this new rogue-lite shooter from Alientrap, you're a commissioned alien privateer, scavenging abandoned space hulks as your team closes in on the Cryptark. But while vessels may be abandoned, they certainly aren't empty. The security systems of these ships are still active and alien entities lurk within. The only way to disable a ship is to destroy its central core, and that's where you come in.

Piloting a heavily-armed mech suit, you must explore hazardous ship interiors, choosing which defenses to disable before launching your assault on the core. From shield generators and repair systems that fix destroyed systems to turrets and map jammers, these defenses can easily overwhelm you if they aren't dealt with. You don't have to destroy every system though; choosing which to prioritize and which order to disable them is the key to success in Cryptark.

The security systems aren't the only dangers. Mechanical organisms roam the vessels, ranging from massive sawblades to shielded Juggernauts that unleash powerful scatter shots. However, you're more than capable of matching enemy firepower with your own arsenal.

Your mech has four weapon slots, four items slots, and an extensive array of equipment to mix and match. Smart machine guns whose bullets can curve around corners, nuke rockets, slime mortars that unleash corrosive fluid, EMP shotguns, lightning guns, lasers, flamethrowers, shields, and much more. You can dual- or even quad-wield weapons too, unleashing a storm of lead to annihilate your enemies.

It's in the midst of that chaos that Cryptark shines. Your firepower feels heavy and powerful, and deftly evading projectiles, lasers, and charging enemies is just as satisfying. Visually, the action pops with vibrant colors and lighting, illuminating the dark interiors with explosions and flames and lasers.

The pre-assault planning is engaging too: weighing the cost of your equipment against the payout of the ship you're going to scavenge, molding your loadout to best deal with the defenses and enemies onboard, scanning ships to see which systems are present and deciding which to tackle first, from what entry point.

Valdis story, absolutely top-tier "Metroidvania" style action rpg is only 4$. If you have not played it you owe it to yourself. Hidden secrets, deep combat and some actual story meat. Multiple playable characters.

I always recommend dark souls of course as well.

Came to ask about this game, refreshed the page that I had left up since yesterday and boom your post was the next post.

I'm taking it as a sign. Bought.

I've only played the demo for this but I'm gonna buy it.

$7.49

Salt seems like a really well made open world survival game and it has overwhelmingly positive reviews.

I bought SALT, but I am getting horrible game breaking frame drops from the start of the game (baseline is about 100, but getting drops to 30 as soon as I move around). This should not be the case, because I have a 5820k@4.3, 16gb RAM and Titan X.

Has Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain gone on sale with a significant reduction before, or would its current prices be about the lowest we can expect for some time still?

Origins seemed better to me, Legends has some shoehorned mechanics that were meant for the WiiU Gamepad if I remember right.

Well, Legends contains also a lot of content from Origins (although with alterations and missing some of the best) so it has more contant. I also prefer the art style over that of Origins. But the final levels and some of the side-content in Origins are better. I think both are equally good playing solo.

I don't have a strong preference for either.

Yeah I'm getting solid 60 on a 760. Maybe driver issue or something. I'd report it on their forum.

I liked Legends more, personally. So much content! The music levels are out of this world and the touch (i.e. Wii U) stages were translated to PC really well. I actually prefer the way they are on PC, because you have full control over the character.

The Last Remnant is awesome!
Valdis Story too

This is game is pretty good! The devs are also amazing and published many updates to make the game get even better with lots of fixes and content.

I see SOMA is highly recommended... is this a scary game? I know it's got a creepy atmosphere, and I can deal with that, but I can't stand jump scares in games.

Very few jump scares. The horror comes from the atmosphere, the story, and the implications/exploration of its themes. It's a haunting game, the kind of horror that sticks with you after you shut the game off and are thinking about what you witnessed and experienced

I'll nominate Dark Souls also.

For $4.99 you're crazy not to give it a go. Especially when adding Durante's DS fix mod to it.

Don't think just buy it.

And also listen to Bonfireside Chat to catch up on all things Dark Souls. They go through each area of this game and all Souls-like games. Great companion to the game.

NEON STRUCT - $5.93 (67% off) - A nice mechanics-first neon-washed stealth game with an 80s influenced synth-pop soundtrack coming from the radios inside the game.

You have a box full of nonlethal gadgets, a light meter, corner leaning, and one of the most satisfying run into silent slides around.
They have guns, security cameras, and ED-209!

There are full level creation tools included and a prequel from the developers built with them. Minor Key Games is a very PC-friendly developer with FOV controls, head bob, Abberation on-off, quick save/load buttons.

Trailer, seriously check it. Heavy M83 vibes.

And if I haven't got you yet, the first door
code is 0451
.

Pass, it's such a boring open world and the only playstyle is to engage in forced shootouts. The game won't let you play in a stealthy manner.

Noted, thanks.

I don't want to get crazy and buy everything random thing I'm interested in because it's cheap.

Anyone know why NBA2k16 is reviewed poorly on PC? Seems like Steam users hate the My Career. I don't really care about that, just want a decent basketball game to play online with friends.

The online of 2k16 on PC is terrible. Only buy it on PC if you are going to play single player. Also note if you do get it some of the presentation stuff is missing. Gameplay wise its the same as the consoles.

Really? That sucks. Well, guess you guys are saving me money left and right. I really wanted a decent basketball game to play online with friends. :|

I'd have a hard time picking one over the other, but I'd always recommend playing Origins before Legends.

The main difference is that Legends has Murphy levels that were designed for Wii U gamepad. Murphy levels are clever and fun, especially coop, but not as strong as the normal levels. Other than that...

Origins
-has a over-world map for level selection
-shmup levels
-better end game bonus level
-feels more cohesive

Legends
-uses gallery hub world for level selection
-shooting glove power up that sort of replaces shmup levels
-music levels which are some of the best in the series
-side stuff to do like daily challenges, soccer minigame
-includes a lot of Origin levels

The career mode is highly dependent on micro transactions. If franchise mode is your thing its amazing in that regard, tons of depth.
