I'd love seeing your solution to getting a heavily armed, bomb-threatening ex-military man who just killed 5 and injured 7 more in a open parking lot alive.
the one in Baton Rouge (guy selling CDs, pinned and shot after cop yelled gun) and the other in Minneapolis (guy pulled over for a broken tail light, woman live broadcasted the aftermath on Facebook)
It's not about waiting a few hours for the shooter to get sleepy and fall asleep.
He was still shooting, those bullets can kill people.

not really, but its what they did to resolve a situation. Its already done, but it breaks type. He was a danger, but police don't "kill as a last resort", except to protect themselves and others. If this person was just blocked off in an intractable position, the usual thing is to take them alive for more information. ie, waiting him out or otherwise incapacitating him.

I'm not sure if this discussion will even take place but it should. If this person is ex-military and at that age that means alot of what he learned was over in the middle east and how things are handled there. He comes back, maybe with undiagnosed PTSD and sees things happen here and has only seen things handled in certain ways over there for how many years? It's just another issue America has with not taking care of veterans and ex-military coming back from tours of duty properly. Just dropping them back into society and saying "You'll be alright'

Also by the way you really can't incapacitate people safely in any manner with a gas that knocks them out.
To knock people out either requires giving them potential brain damage or lower their breathing reflex, which can cause asphyxiation and death.
Traquilizer has the same issues with breathing.
It's also why people commonly die from combining alcohol with certain meds. Not from the chemical persay but their breathing reflex gets so shallow or stops completely and they just die from suffocation.

Certainly seems like the only way someone could be a good enough shot to do what he did. I honestly couldn't truly comprehend what was happening in the video that was posted last night, but I guess that was him rushing at one of the cops and killing him. It was mentioned elsewhere that was a very militaristic move.

The police's primary job is to ensure public safety. Taking out a maniac that has murdered and threatened to continue to murder even as he is actively shooting at the police is ensuring public safety.

I am willing to admit the possibility I am completely wrong and they were being complete dicks to him for no reason but hear me out here...
Police questioning is frustrating. It doesn't matter what kind of mundane shit you are talking about. It doesn't go like this:
"So you didn't shoot anybody right?"
"No."
"Okay. Cool."
They ask pointed questions because getting clear answers to those and eliminating any semblance of doubt is the best thing for the person being questioned.
It can feel insulting and degrading, but it is them doing their due diligence so that the reports are completed and filled out with as many details as humanly possible.
Seriously, I felt insulted once when I dealt with police for reporting my own goddamn wallet stolen. After simmering down I realized that it was just them going through the motions to fill out a bunch of bullshit paperwork they were required to do.
edit: but yes, people should be bombarding them with requests to take that tweet down. In fact I am going to right now.

I wonder what a "special weapon" even is. Legally you can buy a Springfield Armory M1 and you've essentially got a semi-automatic version of of a military battle rifle that has an extremely similar variant previously used by the military as a sniper rifle.
So really, yes, whatever he had was probably a legal weapon with a scope, that is after all, what most sniper rifles are. 'Course it also could have been a piece of shit weapon too. I guess all I'm trying to say is that amazing deadly guns aren't "special."

It wouldn't surprise me if there were personal feelings among them to want the shooter dead by the end of it, but that's natural. And if there was another option, then you'd have a point.
There wasn't another option though. Forget your James Bond and NCIS and Rainbow Six games; this is reality. And if you know enough that a bot with an explosive charge was used, you should know enough about the surrounding situation to know why it had to be utilized.

and no one is saying they didn't do their jobs and more, but this falls into that 'more' category for me.
"we can't catch this guy, we've been here long enough, lets just blow him up" is something I'd never expect to see in law enforcement tactical options.

Having him listed as a suspect puts that man in danger. With all the press conferences they could've said one line that the dude was innocent and released. They chose not to do that, and kept him in danger for no good reason.
