Business Insider: Nintendo's stock rose 33% since Friday. It's highest since 1983.

it means a lot actually. if mario kart 8 sold 5 million copies and nintendo made $30 off each copy sold, they'd make $150,000,000 in profit off the game before overhead, taxes, etc. how many users and in-app purchases would be needed to match that after royalties?

The question is if they can continue to reach those type of sales in a shrinking market. If they can, it absolutely continues to make sense to be in the dedicated hardware business.

A fraction of the audience that also pays 40$ rather 0$ + unknown sums of money in IAPS, usually dominated by a select few whales. 15m copies of Pokemon sold on the 3DS is $600m before we cut out retailer shares, so let's say $450m making it way back home. Plus it moves hardware (profitable) and accessories to some degree and some of that will be pure digital and drives other digital services (PokeBank).

That, much as Pokemon GO generates as well, is a lot of money.

So why not both?
Well I agree with you there, they should stick with both until the bottom drops out on dedicated hardware.

I bought a bunch of NTDOY at 20, and keep stocking up on them even when they reached 16.
Last week, it shot back to 20.8, I felt vindicated.

I grew up with Nintendo and own a WiiU. My resistance to mobile or 3rd party etc.. Is because that isn't "my" Nintendo or how it "should" be played lol. Basically my opinions. I would love to have snes Nintendo back but they have bowed out of the power race and you don't thrive on niche consoles like WiiU. Point is.. If you are a fan of Nintendo.. Just be happy they have a smash on their hands..even if it isn't how you or I would want it, from a business standpoint if someone thinks they will make MORE non-mobile games because of it... Ehhhh.. Expect a ton of mobile development. unlikely this will get people buying new hardware for these ips but they will download the next game on their phone. This game is everywhere.

Nintendo philosophy on simple, fun game play makes most of their Ips easy to translate on mobile.

Wario Ware
Rythem Heaven
Mario minigames and other Mario stuff
Mario Kart
Animal Crossing

they could make tons of money here and still perhaps use some of that to make tons of first party games for NX?

Do Zelda Go next, please. Buildings are dungeons and Houses are Shrines; you go inside them and solve puzzles and kill bosses. Break vases and pots to get virtual rupees.

It's going to be fucking great.

Why would Nintendo consider going mobile-only when they can use their mobile products to cross-promote/bolster their traditional titles and permeate their brand everywhere, successfully reinvigorating their dedicated gaming business and getting the best of both worlds. Become the biggest player in both the traditional AND the casual gaming space. It would be an actual, true dominance of the video game industry as we currently know it.

...or so that's the theory anyway. I'm skeptical even with Pokemon Go's overnight success but hell, it's a start.

How much of this is actually Nintendo? Isn't Pokemon owned by a few companies?
Read this

That said, on top of their general involvement as partial owners of pokemon as a franchise (and sole owner of all the trademarks), Nintendo helped fund this particular game, invested in the developer, assisted in the conceptualization of the idea, has been promoting, and is also developing the phone accessory specially designed for the game.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Michael Patcher was right, just bring Nintendo's IP to other platforms and let the gazillions of dollars flow to Nintendo while we get to play some of the best games ever without the need of buying the shitty hardware they make.

Nintendo isn't doing mobile only like some are hoping for-not sure why. They'll have NX and mobile side by side which will satisfy core gamers and casual gamers!

Just remembering all the doom and gloom fan worries about Nintendo going third party makes me laugh. Maybe this won't be sustainable, in fact it probably won't be, but it still seems like it was a pretty smart bet.

No one ever actually said this and you know it.

I specifically remember tons of people
fanboys
claiming that going mobile would destroy nintendo's handheld business that that it would doom the company

they were mostly parroting what iwata was saying at the time, which is that they'd never release their games on mobile platforms

don't make me dig for quotes, I promise it's true

dedicated hardware is an old decaying business for everyone, true. when i think of non-dedicated nintendo, i start thinking of nintendo on pc with their own store/digital platform like steam.

No one ever said it would doom their company (ok, I'm sure there are a small handful of people that did). I'm sure many said it could doom their dedicated handheld business. And honestly, it might eventually. But that's not what you said and it's not what I responded to.

taking a stroll playing pokemon go at 12am-4am in an area with tons of bars/social scenen (for me, Los Angeles county/Studio City) is pretty much guaranteed to provide some of the bes,t unique, memorable gaming experiences unlike anything else to date

Yes, but this was never advertised as one of Nintendo's main mobile games like Miitomo, Fire Emblem, or Animal Crossing.

That's because the Nintendo 5 was a deal where Nintendo developed the games and DeNA was handling the online monetization and analytics. Niantic is the developer and co-publisher of Pokémon Go, and they are handling the monetization (instead of DeNA). Nintendo and TPC bought stakes into Niantic, and are also producing the game alongside.

Maybe, an app like Netflix on the tv? Turn the tv on and press the Nintendo app.

This is what will happen, not Nintendo on Xbox or Playstation.

Watching the nerds come out of the woodwork in these threads is always a good time though.

are we really going to do this?

because there were a bunch of people shitting on Nintendo for not doing toys-to-life and it still runs the risk of being run into the ground

Ha, "remembering"? You can already see it throughout this thread. Unfortunately Pokemon Go's success seems to have fueled that notion for many.
I gave it a browse, and yeah, no kidding. It's like they're surprisingly resistant to basic reality.

(It's not really surprising at all.)

Infinity dollars.this is their QoL imitative lol. I have never seen so many obvious gamers walking around...phones in hand and smiles on faces.

loooool just got a phone call from a relative in Central America asking me if I'm playing Pokemon Go. Said she just got back home after a Pokemon walk.

If Nintendo handles this well... :O

As an investor (and someone who has been unable to install the game yet since he is busy) I am curious, do people see the software being easily malleable to be enhanced over time by Niantic? More pokemon, better gameplay, phone on phone battles?

as a nintendo fan I'm shocked that they're making lots of money with a simplified experience for lapsed and new gamers that had an explosive spread through word of mouth

Yes. There is a ton of room for better usability, more features, and more content. And the game should have good enough user retention for it to matter.

from the original dena/nintendo press conference thread:

No idea. Not the intent. My apologies.

It's just frustrating that people seriously want this to be the avenue Nintendo go down, when it'd kill them.

I assure you this was not the only case.

give it a read if you want to laugh
