So what is everyone's expectations on Jared Leto's Joker?

There was no guarantee Nolan was going to even do a third one, either with or without Ledger's death.
You are absolutely delusional if you think for a second that the third Batman movie wasn't going to have Joker in it if Heath was alive. Doesn't matter Nolan wanted it or not WB would of wanted it. Now, would he of been the main villain? Probably not but he would of been in it.

I am extremely cautiously optimistic about Suicide Squad as a movie but as Leto's Joker goes i don't like the look i have never have i never will as for his performance i am sure it will be great because he's a great actor.

It wasn't. I think it was Chares Roven who in the pre TDKR days was interviewed and said the plans for a third Batman were in limbo because Heath was going to feature and they didn't want to recast. TDKR is a whole different thing of what we would have gotten.

That said, I wonder if any actor would have taken the role of the Joker if Heath was still alive. Damn hard shoes to fill and meet eye to eye.

The only actor I could have seen playing a continuation of Ledger's Joker would have been Johnny Depp.

I'm really hoping he delivers, The Joker is the best villain of them all for me.

I hope we get an Affleck v Leto (Batman v Joker) film too.

This is based on something Goyer said, but you have to take it with a serious pinch of salt since Goyer wasn't the main story writer on any of the Nolan Batman films. Goyer also said that TDKR would've built up to a Harvey Dent film, which doesn't make sense since the Nolan films were always meant to be a trilogy (per Chris Nolan himself).
Iirc, TDK resulted from the merging of the original Batman 2 and 3 story ideas. Remember it was a loooong blockbuster for the time, they almost meshed two whole movies together there. The explanation was that Nolan didn't want to commit to a third movie so he just crammed it all in the second one.

I dunno, the last Joker line makes it very, very clear that wasn't the last of him, and he wouldn't have taken a back seat in a next film.

I dunno, Joseph Gordon Levitt is like Heath'd twin and is a great actor. They cast him as Robin though lol I once thought he was totally going to be the Joker.

...

Now onto Leto, I like that he feels scary. Like he's going to snap at any given second. He has the eyes down.

Now that I think about, what interpretation of Joker have people not liked? The only ones I've ever seen loud complaints about are Young Justice and The Batman takes. Considering how long the character has existed, the odds are in Leto's favor for people liking it.

I'm sure he'll be fine, but not enough of a standout performance to make people forget about Heath Ledger, so they'll complain that he's awful because he's not Heath Ledger.

My expectations for Leto are low but I'll probably end up liking him because he does seem to have some aspects of the character on point. For as much as I like Ledger and Nicholson, Nicholson is playing an exaggerated version of himself with Joker mannerisms and Ledger is kind of a gangster in face paint. Leto seems to be aiming for a more Joker that's closer to the core.

But goddamn, that tattoo look is god awful.

Funny you should say that, Johnny Depp actually did replace Ledger in another film (along with Jude Law and Colin Farrell).

The official word was that Nolan threw Goyer's idea in the trash and made The Dark Knight, the idea that The Dark Knight resulted from the merging of ideas is a rumor. Yeah, the Joker would've definitely be back, but I doubt he would've played a big role. It's just not Nolan's style to use the same antagonist twice.

Anyway, Leto. He's a good actor, but I'm actually not expecting much of the film and his role in it. I don't doubt he will bring the crazy though.

Isn't his role in the movie not as big as Ledger's in The Dark Knight?

Jared Leto has an Oscar. I think his acting chops are reflective of it, too. I have no doubts about what he's going to bring to the table. And I can't wait!

I'm not really looking forward to Suicide Squad, and I'm as big a DC fanboy as you're going to get. Part of this apprehension is due in part to Leto's Joker. I hate the design of the character (in fact I dislike the design of the majority of the characters in this film) and it all just seems to come across as a little "try-hard".

The only positive things I like about the character is the fact that Leto is the right build and that he's a damn creepy son of a bitch in real life. And I'm not just talking about the "Oh, Jared sent me a rat. He so cray-cray", either.

It seems the only criticism people have is that he has tattoos.
Remember the last time people were skeptical about the character based on his looks?

If the movie's good people will say he's the best Joker, then about a year later once the hype dies down they'll come around to Ledger being the best again and it'll stay that way forever.

If the movie's bad people will say that at least the Joker was good in it and that he was the only good part, but people won't think he was better than Ledger.

I don't expect much. Even the cadence of his voice seems too similar to Ledgers for me to think he'll bring anything amazing to the role.

Honestly.. I'm really excited to see more of his Joker. Every trailer has made me more and more hype in seeing his portrayal. I feel like this is finally the Joker I've wanted to see on the big screen since I was a kid. Ledger's was amazing in his own right, but now I want more "Clown Prince of crime" Joker.

I'm reserving judgement. I had reservations about Ledger, but honestly the first footage I saw immediately had me on board. Still iffy on Leto. I hope he's great though.

Not into it. I don't think forcing some kind of psychological method acting for a role is a healthy way to start. He could impress me, but I think he looks a little over the top for my tastes.

I bet he'll be pretty good. Leto is a great actor and he went method with this one so it's not like he's going to be phoning it in. I imagine any legitimate faults people have with him beyond "That's not what my Joker looks like" will be on the script.

I think some people have more of a problem with his on-set antics. See used condoms and anal beads. I'm excited about his performance but it does seem a bit OTT.

Batman fans kind of have a shitty track record in general when it comes to evaluating character casting. They didn't like Keaton, they didn't like Ledger, I remember a lot of people thinking Tommy Lee Jones would be good, they didn't like Hathaway (I thought she was fine, she wasn't the problem in TDKR), they didn't like Affleck.

I loved him in DBC so I know he's a great actor but I think he's gonna overdo it, itll be partly the fault of the writing too. It'll be cringey like Vaas from Far Cry.

Decent. Cartoonish. Probably age better than Nicholson. Nothing on Ledger, and I'm sure they're intentionally very different interpretations.

I really enjoyed Heath's Joker, but that hasn't clouded my judgment on anyone having that role. He did an amazing job, but it's not his role. So I'm looking forward to seeing how leto does. I just want to see this movie already, tired of trailers.

Based on the pattern you're highlighting Leto's Joker should be shit, then? I don't recall any criticism of the casting.

And you mention Tommy Lee Jones - I'm sure where the makeup and character were shown people's opinions turned around pretty quick.

Jared's Joker and Harley are going to be massive hits with audiences. I expect them to be on a ton of marketing material & products going forward.

So I expect a great Joker. WB can't afford to screw up the character.

It seems kind of odd to compare him to Ledger. They may be playing the same character in name, but two are completely different. One going for the grounded Nolan aesthetic, the other more like a version from the comics

They both can excel in their respective takes on the character

Not odd in the slightest. Nolanverse may be more grounded, but Snyderverse is actually grounded as well. One of the main beats of BvS was how would the real world respond to Superman.

So I think comparing the 2 Jokers is completely fine. The Snyderverse is finally giving Joker some companions to play off of.

I'm ready for a more psychotic Joker who is over the top with mannerisms and dress style.

I'm more hyped see Killer Croc really in a film then another Joker

I think the acting will be great and will probably be closer to Hamill joker than anything. I don't like the costume design though. shirtless, tatted, silver-grilled joker is just all wrong.

If the highly successful Nolan movies were not guaranteed to get a sequel using Ledger (pre-death) what the fuck makes anyone else think Leto would be in one?

He will probably play the role very well but no amount of good acting is going to stop him from looking like a jackass. Pretty much his whole design is garbage.

There's a lot I like about his mannerisms, from what I've seen in the trailer, and all that is negated by the way he looks. The hair, the lips, the tattoos. The attire, at points. I just doesn't look good, imo.

I still don't like how he looks and I hope he isn't on-screen enough to "steal the show." I imagine he'll be fine in small doses, but if he's front and center of every second scene, it's going to get old fast. That being said...He's The Joker. He kinda HAS to be front and center. It's his thing. I dunno. I dunno what to think yet.

The look is actually perfect to me apart from the teeth and tats. It just seems ridiculous to me that the Joker would sit for the hours required to get tattoos and the one on his forehead screams hot-topic emo kid (I dont think we're still saying that... but whatever).
