SFV server 'maintenance' down-time is really starting to hack me off

God knows why a business needs to take their servers down for 8-10hrs every time they deploy new code. Always in peak hours for us Europeans - thanks Capcom.

This is nothing new, many online games do this and SFV is no different.

SFV does it way more often than other online games, for much longer, and during times when most people would be playing the game.

It's evident: the online framework of the game was not made with the greatest of resources, and this is the result of that. It sucks, but yeah.

I'd really like to know what takes 8 hours of maintenance every time they do maintenance.

Well first theres a Lunch break , then some brainstorming over the next sexy outfit to release ( this could take a while ). And finally hitting that submit button.

No, why would it be? There's no need to take systems down for 8-10 hours to deploy code. Unless they're doing all their testing in their live environments.

Yeah 8 hours is a damn long maintnance.

Most MMO's take extended maintenance times to give the servers a rest, deploy infrastructure changes, etc. It's usually not just pushing code, though who knows what the overhead is pushing patches to PSN.

Given some of the other implementation details regarding CFN and their online infrastructure, this would not be surprising. It's a very poor implementation even compared to other Japanese developers and it makes me wonder how Capcom would handle an actual hit mobile game if/when they get one.

They're basically a D-tier developer with a Z-tier infrastructure and we are basically watching what could be a good fighting game rot.

Yeah, crazy how they have to shut the server down almost every week for maintenance.

Well, most games don't need to shut down their server for 8+ hours for maintenance...

The only other game that I can think of that has long maintenance hours is The Division. Haven't touch that game for a while, so i don't know if it is still the case.

Yeah, 8 hours is ridiculous. They seriously have to have some incompetent people over there. Nothing they're doing with these marginal updates should require so much down time.

MGSV is equally bad. I basically can't play the game on Monday evenings because of the time they schedule "maintenance" and the number of hours they shut it down for. There's no excuse for taking down servers for that long.

Because you have to maintain your servers. There is a way to mitigate such a downtime, however Capcom is broke.

Edit: I question how many people here complaining even have a degree in computer science. Scheduled maintenance isn't just to play in marginal updates but to have enough time to fix other things which aren't to critical or should the updates went wrong.

What other fighting game does this with any frequency at all

There's almost no other game period that does it let alone fighting games.

Blizzard added Ana to Overwatch a few weeks ago, the game wasn't down for 8 hours. Hell, at the same time they released a big WoW patch and it still wasn't down. Servers were a bit wonky for like 30 minutes at most due to all the stress.

Because its an online game and that is what you do to make sure things stay operational. I don't know why this is unexpected.

Not saying the 8 hour wait isnt ridiculous. But there is hardly any other Fighting game that has monthly DLC updates like this.

Did ASW pull the XrdR servers down when Dizzy was added?

Other games don't do this anywhere close to this degree.

It is a bit odd when you think about it. It's not like an MMO or anything, hell when I used to still play they didn't even always maintenence on Tuesday and it was usually done early. I can't think of any other genre that really needs this kind of downtime, it's like they are using decade old tech to run this game. Compare it to any other fighting game and it looks even worse. Compare it to Overwatch, well at least Juri hopefully will not crash the game every time she lands a hit.

There are hardly any online service games that do have actual monthly content updates that go down for this long and with this frequency.

It's ridiculous.

Avid FFXIV player and they pull down the servers fairly often for hotfixes. Hell for major patches they do 24 hour maint periods.
