[SPOILER THREAD] Suicide Squad

One thing I didn't understand was why were the Squad angry with Flagg after learning the "truth"? What even was the truth? I thought they already knew that Enchantress was behind all this.

It's really really bad editing but the "squad" doesn't even know the Enchantress exists. Only the audience. We see Waller putting the squad dossiers together, and introducing the Enchantress to the Pentagon but the criminals never met her or knew anything. After the Enchantress goes rogue, they assemble the squad with Flagg in charge to rescue Waller.

None of this was made particularly clear while it was happening tho.

the scenes of the Joker reminded me of Schwarzenegger's Freeze during the movie...
I remember thinking " welp thats not a good sign"

I thought it was pretty damn fun. Villain was hot garbage, but everyone was good in their role especially Margot, Smith, Leto.

David Ayer is real hit and miss, but he did alright. I left the theater with a smile instead of a tear when I left B V S.

Go watch it.

Just saw the movie.
An OK, but very frustrating experience. I liked the cast for the most part, although Croc seemed a tad bit racist (BET anyone?)

But the writing was absolutely terrible. Many of the jokes fell flat, and the ones that hit were from Deadshot and Harley. The licensed music throughout the film was very distracting and out of place. You can tell an out of touch executive was responsible for shoe-horning a lot of the dad-rock in there in an attempt to make it more "fun and wild"

Also, they bonded way too quickly to justify their motivations; Diablo especially. His transformation was so jarring and almost Scorpion King level bad. I honestly don't know what to give this movie in terms of a number rating. There's so much potential there but it was squandered by meddling. I'll give it 2 stars out of 5

Watched it earlier tonight. Theater was about 3/4 full for a 6:15 showing.

It wasn't very good. Deadshot and Harley were the best things for me. Will did a pretty good job with the role, and Margot is just really fun to watch. Unfortunately, the plot itself was just a mess. I think the villain was too high stakes/high visibility. Not sure if it matters, but I haven't watched BvS yet. Didn't feel like it would have helped at all.

Anyway, it seems kinda damning that rope guy got almost as much character development as aussie dude and sword girl.

Boomerang joke or not, him just showing back up was really stupid. It would have been great if he actually did just nope the fuck out of there after he was told he could leave.

Otherwise, I was really just hoping to watch it for the eye candy and action scenes, but even the latter were underwhelming. Shitty quick cuts, and somewhat indistinguishable black blobs for enemies? Bad idea. Coolest thing was fire cholo turning into a fire skeleton.

I don't think the Joker would be a good member for the Suicide Squad

A criminal mastermind who's thwarted the Batman? Why wouldn't he make a good member of the Suicide Squad?

And who does make a good member?

I mean, considering the team is a loose conglomeration of self-loathing heroes and villains banding together to fight for the common good -- and oftentimes under duress.

Hey. Don't you dare disrespect AC/DC. But I agree, they could've kept Dirty Deeds done dirt cheap then removed the rest, of the rock at least. Everything that wasn't rock was made for the film except the Eminem song and I personally liked those tracks and feel like it added a lot of drama to their respective scenes, one of my favorite things about the movie actually. Also agree in the potential and squandering.

I hate to be cliche but it's because he's unpredictable. It's why you have stuff like Alexander Luthor not allowing him to show up for their villain shindig during Infinite Crisis.

I hope to never again hear an Eminem song in a blockbuster film...

That was one of the worst ones - and it particularly stood out how little the music was influencing the pace/editing of the sequence. It just seemed like they'd already cut the scene and then just laid the track on top of it, without altering anything. Made it feel even more out of place and awkward.

I thought it fit Deadshot's character and attitude but yeah I can see that.

Don't watch suicide squad then.
it's like all of 15 seconds.

I'm saying after seeing it pop up in that scene, I never want to again.

Outside of that song choice the music was actually pretty decent. That one was just a glass shattering moment of awkwardness.

I think they overdid it, the more they added the less impact other licensed music had, for better or worse but things like that are better used sparingly. But you should check out the OST. Plenty of great original songs on it, most if not all were in the film iirc

This I would definitely agree with - too many licensed tracks (and too close together) took away any impact they could have had.

The big tonal issue I had with the licensed music is that a good chunk of it didn't seem to fit the aesthetic of the characters - if these guys are all misfits why are their anthems mainstream, number 1 hits from the last 3 decades? I think the original tracks (Purple lamborghini, the action bronson one etc) worked better with lesser known artists because it seemed more cohesive with the characters themselves.

Playing Gangsta during the acid bath scene was a really good idea imo and made that scene special and yeah they definitely put too many of the songs close together. I think they played Led Zeppelin right after they played AC/DC a minute or two away from eachother and it was such an odd shift and it kinda made me groan.
So has anyone spilled the beans on what the original ending was if this one was supposedly so much better?
Uh, all I know so far is that Incubus's better design was a horror mashup of the three bodies he absorbed and it looked terrifying and cool, then they fucked it up by adding more and more things on top until we got the mess that was scorpion King Incubus. This is coming from another gaffer who I guess was close enough to the production to know said information.

It's probably already been answered but I'm on my phone. .

When does it take place? Post JLA? Flash's costume being the reason I ask.

I know its cliche but where was Superman during this?

Superman died fighting Doomsday in BvS so there's that. Batman and the government know of the existence of superhuman beings, the government isn't sure how to handle them so they create the suicide squad. Meanwhile, Flash is out doing his thing and Batman asks Amanda at the end of the movie for their information on meta humans so he can start building the JL. So it's release is chronological.

Saw it last night.

Film is a mess but enjoyable to a degree. The real bad points are the villains. Cara Delvigne can't act but I don't think anyone could have made a good job out of the part as written. Reminded me of a bad guy/woman from an 80s movie. Only really interacting with he crap CGI brother for most of her scenes didn't help.

As for the squad. Deadshot and El Diablo are massively OP (El Diablo ludicrously so) making the rest of the squad superfluous apart from the plot contrivance of having flooded the subway at the end to give Croc something to do (even though it didn't end up being him priming the bomb) also had trouble understanding some of his lines. Will Smith was Will Smith, I thought he was fine.

Harley was good and Margot Robbie gave a good performance and was decent as some comic relief. What's the point in her being there though? Shr doesn't really contribute anything powers wise to the squad. Same really for Boomerang.

My wife didn't find Leto's joker entirely offensive (and she hates the guy) but I wasn't a big fan. I didn't see the point introducing him in this film with such a mediocre reason for him actually being there. If they chopped his part down in post I guess we'll have to see what the directors cut is like I guess. Leto's performance was meh to me. Also why didn't Harley just walk at the end? Her bomb was disabled.

Will not be watching again until out on Blu-ray.

Idk, would it have been neat if the final fight was actually something like this?

-squad mans up and heads for the end game only to see Enchantress and Incubus are already neutralized with Batman and Wonder Woman (hell maybe throw in Flash?) standing over them.
-everybody nopes this is too much and they start to retreat with the heroes in pursuit
-they bag and tag them one by one

the good guys are the good guys and we kill "why didn't X help" questions
Yeah now that I rethink and reread this it would probably work better in other mediums than feature lenght films

You don't put Joker on a team, the guy is the biggest liability.

You send an invite to avoid disrespect though, Alexander learned that the hard way.
-------
They did a bad job making a case for this team outside of Deadshot and Enchantress. Apparently no one even like pre-screened El Diablo to see if he'd cooperate.

I'm not really sure Joker not playing well with a team is a reason for this film to not attempt to do it. After all the entire plot is started by Waller making a bad call on who she wants to control on this team in Enchantress, so we're not exactly seeing a Waller that's exhibiting great judgement yet.

Saw the movie, it was fun but it's also a copy of GotG. Joker was ok but he didn't do or said any jokes, maybe the disco scene was supposed to be one?

So has anyone spilled the beans on what the original ending was if this one was supposedly so much better?

From what I heard, they actually added more stuff and the ending works a bit better, but who knows. One major plot change is that The Joker comes and tries to get Harley, she refuses because she wants to help everyone else and then we see that scene from the trailer where he throws the nade and says bye.

SS is a mediocre movie that promises far more excitement and zany action than it delivers. It has one really cool character (Harley Quinn), a boring one played by a charismatic actor (Will Smith as Deadshot) and a major character who is superfluous to the plot and is only there to lure audiences (Jared Leto as the joker). Other characters are wasted. Only interesting character interaction is when Harley appears. Boring action scenes. Most of the time the SS is fighting anonymous CGI in heavily edited scenes taking place at night. You can't really see much. Deadshot's biggest piece is when he's shooting everything in sight for a minute but it should have been a set piece but looked like it was filmed on a budget. The big end fight is a bust: the SS is underpowered and the world has to be saved by a bomb that's put in place by scuba dibers and the croc in scenes that last little more than five seconds. Completely unmemorable ending plus a useless mid-credits scene.

It was enjoyable while it lasted but when I left the cinema there's that sour taste in your mouth that only gets worse the more you think about the movie. So many wasted opportunities. It's not a movie I'd recommend to others.

You would never hear the end of people calling that a cop-out ending.

i loved the movie, but i guess my taste isnt as refined.

also the movie will be devoured by the masses, it has everything they want, pop music, hot chicks, hot guys, jokes, and explotions

and i know everyone hated Enchantress but i just cant be mad a Cara

All three DCU movies get worse the more you think about them. This is by far the best of the trio though, its flaws look trivial compared to the eternal dumpster fire that is Man of Steel.

Flag casually eating a chicken drumstick while looking out through a window at the night sky before that scene where June transforms was the most unintentionally funny thing from the movie to me.

Why the fuck did Waller and Flagg need to see Deadshot take target practice at the prison? What the hell was that all about? Like was that his first introduction in an earlier cut of the movie but they just said "fuck it keep it in there" because it was more screen time for Will Smith and it was cool to see his shooting skills?

I was so happy to see Scott Eastwood was just a background soldier guy and not revealed to be Dick Grayson undercover.

Also I'm guessing Harley's anger at Diablo and telling him to own up to the fact he killed his kids was something to do with the fact that she's stated in her introduction screen as being an accomplice to the murder of Robin who had to be a teenager when killed so maybe she's gone through something similar with denial towards that.

This sounds really interesting, hopefully that's why she said it and reacted like she did.

Yeah, the masses are pretty stupid and easy to please.
They're not like the rest of us in here.
