No Man's Sky - Early Impressions/Reviews-in-progress Thread

I've said this since the first time I saw NMS, but this would be a nice chill game like Journey or something thatgamecompany would produce. But I was expecting it to be at most a 30 dollar game. Not a 90 CAD worth game, but its something I will check out sometime down the line.

Hope for the best for Shaun and his team. The fact this game was made by an apparently sub 20 people team still blows me away.

I didn`t mean it should get a free pass. My point is that people can`t have too high expectations when going into this game.

Yeah, well IMO they kinda did it to themselves because people are going to go in with $60 worth of expectations. That's just how people are no matter how much work went into the game or how extraordinary the feat is. If the content doesn't match the quality they usually find in most $60 games both visually and mechanically then they are going to be way less forgiving of it's shortcomings.

I'm still in line to get it day one though as long as the PC port is solid as I see that the game is going to have very long legs.

I like how there's only 1 or 2 finalized reviews while the rest are reviews in progress but conclusions on it being overhyped are already being drawn.

:lol

So far I'm very impressed and captivated by it. We will see how long my hype can keep up.
Enjoying everything so far, more than what I expected!
Great game.

based on most of the early impression of reviewers it's not looking good. Atleast not a 10/10 game like it was hyped up on the net to be. Seems like it will get around 6-8 from most sites. That's ok it's a slightly above average to a good game. Nothing wrong with that.

Yea but how many games are 10/10? People's expectations were way too ridiculous. The game does what it set out to do. There's nothing wrong with that.

I'm agreeing with you btw

The reviews-in-progress sound pretty positive to me (in the OP).

And hyped up to be a 10/10? I'm sorry, I wasn't browsing those circles. I was on GAF.

The reviews seem to indicate it's a pretty good to great game. If people overhyped themselves because they do that sorta thing, that's their problem.

Nothing wrong with a game being average. If people were expecting like 85+ metacritic, they were overhyping it. Game looks to be good fun if you're into this style of game, it'll probably average in the 70s.

Sounds promising so far. Of course we knew already that this game is not for everyone and that's okay. Think it will be ranged between 75-80 on MC when all is said and done.

Oh no Jim Sterling doesnt like a game so we better make fun of him right guys?

I imagine he wont hate it more than Mighty No 9 at least so dont go crazy yet NMS fans.

This post doesn't make sense. People thinking that a game is going to score well doesn't automatically equate to "over hyping" it. especially if the general impressions from previews of the game have been positive.

The game looked good but Sterling is very accurate and his concerns make sense.

So are the media going to juggle the scores a week just like with Destiny?

Not saying there is. But in a review thread, you'd think people would actually wait for more reviews to hit before falling into the confirmation bias trap.

This game could hit the 70s metacritic, the 80s or the 90s. We don't know yet.

I'm hearing mumblings that no Australian reviewers have been given codes but might be wrong there. If so it is quite strange that an entire country has been shunted for no real reason given, though that may be due to our outspoken nature on things. I don't doubt this game will do well however, it looks phenomenal and I can't wait.

Edit; I'm wrong, we just received them late!

Curious to see AngryJoe's score cause you know that thread will turn to shit the moment the video comes out.

Oh man if he rates this game a 4/10 or a 5/10 imagine back and forth between fans and haters. You can guarantee there will be dedicated thread just for that review.

Lol. Too funny.

Have you seen the list of games for ps+ in the last few years? We haven't even got the AAA ps4 launch window games I don't think. I highly doubt we'll see NMS for ps+ any time in the next few years but hey I guess that's your decision to make.

Touche. THen I'll get it when it's $20 if the reviews and gamers like it

Re jims impresions
Sounds like NMS is a concept that had to be turned into a AAA video game by employing a "laid back" crafting and inventory managment skinner box.

Disappointed to hear that my fears about the gameplay being a mindless grind seem to be true. Wanted to buy it but now I'm back on the fence. Probably still will buy it just to check it out.

I think the overhyped comments come from the games announcement until about a few months ago when the question from outlets was "this looks amazing but what is the game, what are we doing? " And those questions lingered for years because the devs stayed very quiet about it so that it would be a surprise. The reality of it was that those little glimpses more recently were what the game is about and some people were still expecting some big surprise in the gameplay. The intricacies of the lore, trading/upgrading and survival mainly came to light within the past few months and I remember even GiantBomb said well we still dont know what this games about. They set expectations that we should expect more than what they were seeing and playing in closed door demos. They probably didn't realize that's what there was to it because the devs may have been more quiet than they should have been towards the reality of the content.

Just what I noticed and what could have contributed to the over hyped statements, whether they have merit or not.

Pretty funny coming into this thread after reading the OT.

Sounds like you're discussing different games.

Haven't played it yet myself.

OTs in general are filled with hype, while other threads on the subject might not be. Same thing happens to most big games, best example for that was Destiny IMO.
