I think you're being a bit pedantic. The conversation is more about what comments/gaffes could hurt him in the polls to such an extent that he couldn't recover, not literally "end" his campaign.

I feel like that Onion headline is one of the most flawed arguments I've seen this whole election. There is no way to "end" the Trump campaign until election day. He's the nominee for one of the two biggest parties in the country and he's going to keep running no matter what. But that being said Trump's garbage is definitely making it so more and more people abandon ship, making it so his campaign will lose hard in November.
