Rumor: Next MacBook Pros to have OLED touch strip, Touch ID in Q4

Happy about the smaller footprint.

Since the MacBook 2nd gen turned out to be a colossal waste of time rather than the leap in usability and performance I was expecting, the 13-inch Pro is the only appropriate replacement for my ailing, aging 11-inch Air from 2011.

Shave that bezel Dell style! It's hard to tell, but both of the two laptops shown below have 13.3 inch screens.

??? Why would they not release a 13?

My bad, i edited my post. I held on to old leaks that did talk of the absence of a 13 model.
Still, the 13 inches users can still take the L and have one without the function keys row like they do with other hardware things, there is no real reason why the 15 inches users have to suffer too.
Regardless you'll lose palmrest space anyway because of the wider trackpad.

They need to hurry up already. Need a new computer for school. Seriously, are they hoping to clear inventory with those that are too desperate to wait for the new hardware to drop?

Man, if they got rid of the 13" model I don't know what I'd do. I've been using Apple laptops for over a decade because their default models were 12" and 13", most other stuff just feels bulky by comparison.

Loss of the function keys is no biggy for me, but I need to see what they plan to do with the OLED. Happy for TouchID to function too, and to finally move from my late 2008 MacBook to something....a bit newer. Just need to make sure there's enough space on the credit card for a fully tricked out one at launch.

Real shame about losing Magsafe, though, that's saved my poor laptop more times than I care to remember.

If that OLED stuff is true, I'll probably take advantage of a cheaper price of the current Macbooks. I need to pick up a new Mini soon, that's actually more important. I wonder if they'll get a slight boost.

y'all crying dont realize its been 84 years since cinema display got refreshed.
At this point I honestly expect the Cinema Display to completely skip the current sharp-edges design the iMac has and to get a revision alongside a new iMac design sometime in like Spring 2017.

And Mac Pro, and Airport Extreme... sigh, Apple post-steve sucks for Macs.

Yeah, and the Mac mini too (for which there's much less excuse for not updating it than the Mac Pro which relies on the rarely-refreshed Xeon chipsets iirc).

As for the Airport Extreme/Time Capsule, I think Apple only really gives that stuff a major refresh when a new 802.11 standard gets released. Still think it'd be nice for the next revision to run tvOS so I could have one fewer box under my TV.

The Thinkpad X had something similar (though not customizable). It was utter shit and later models got rid of it.

I doubt Apple will find a way to make it an acceptable replacement or even improvement.

Any speculation on the cost of a base 15" model?

Probably similar to current prices. Doubt it'd be all that different.

Part of the difference is that function keys are much less essential in macOS than in Windows. I practically never use the F* keys as actual F* keys in macOS, whereas dubiously-functional F* keys in Windows (where apps and the OS rely on them in keyboard shortcuts more) would be much more of a problem, so it's riskier to experiment with changing that row up on a Windows machine. Also, Lenovo's execution was shit more so than the concept. It was just capacitive buttons that lit up differently depending on app, not a full-on touch screen.

In the ThinkPad's case it wasn't baked into the OS, which put it at a disadvantage. Plus, Windows users are more attached to their proper F-keys than Mac users. (Alt-F4, F5, etc.)

I really hope they offer an option to upgrade to the AMD card on the 13-inch.

I really want to play some occasional Overwatch and Diablo, but I'm not getting the 15-inch.

If performance is really important for me, does it make sense to wait for the new Macbook Pro's? I don't know shit about CPUs and GPUs.

I would faint from excitement if the 13" model had the same GPU and quad-core options as the 15"

I was a PowerBooker for life, didn't even get into the Air but sticked with my MBP 15. But the new MacBook was so revolutionary in size I switched and I'm not sure if I can ever go back to a MBP unless they are as light and thin. I travel a lot.

Wait, who in the world was expecting the MacBook Pro to be revealed at the iPhone event? Why would you expect that? It's always been at a separate event in October. iPhone event is for iPhone and iPads and iPods and always has been. Macs always get their own event in October or a few weeks after.

Have you had to compromise what you do on it at all?

Ever since I got a Surface Pro 4 I've realized how heavy my 15" rMBP is. I would love to upgrade to this new model but it will probably be too expensive to justify, especially considering my late '13 MBP still runs great. Really excited to see this overhaul though.

Much less than I expected. I can use InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator to the design stuff we do perfectly well, which tops at A3@300dpi or 4K. Haven't tried Cinema 4D at it, that probably wouldn't work. I have heard it's not great for motion work either.

Other than that, it's phenomenal. Smaller than my iPad Pro, battery lasts all day, fits on an airplane tray with enough space for a gin & tonic to spare.

You're crazy. Lightroom and photoshop turn my 2013 mbp into mush.

the Dell has a nose-cam though

On my late 2013 MBP, Lightroom can make the fan go wild but performance is fine (editing 22 MP RAW files). Performance has actually gotten better since 2013 due to Adobe's updates.

Photoshop is fine for me as well though I don't really do anything too intense.

Apple does have that patent for putting the camera behind the display panel.

Though I have a feeling we'd see it used in an iPhone first.

Oh I bet they can't actually do it. they're not going to potentially compromise the display just so it's transparent enough for a camera. that'd be like the last priority that they'd tack on if it was possible

Not quite. iPads are usually October/March. Last year they just had a big September event and didn't bother with the October one. Not unreasonable to expect the same this year.

iPads have been in October too, until last year when they had one massive hardware event.
With the new iPhone being pretty low key, likely no new Apple TV and a spec bump at best on the iPad, it's not too far fetched to think they could add in new Mac hardware to the September event.

iPhone and Apple Watch in September? Mac and iPad in October?

I haven't heard many rumors about new iPads, or for that matter, the Apple TV. 4K HDR support is badly needed especially when they're trying to charge a premium for their set-top box.

The point is they don't do Mac releases at the iPhone events.

Again, touch id sounds amazing. I so fucking wish that they'd put a dgpu and a quad-core cpu in the 13in model but that's asking for too much.

Not positive if I'll upgrade from my 2014 pro, but if I do I won't be an idiot this time and I'll max out.

They also don't do more than 3 events a year and Sept is #3. This situation with the Mac is unprecedented so it's really hard to nail down when they will be announced. Honestly, an event tomorrow would be suitable given how out of date nearly every Mac product is.

Since when is there a limit? I still say it'll be October if not two weeks after the iPhone event

They like to put the Mac events in October since they want people to buy the old stock for school before then. They put sales on the current machines for school.

I just want to see this thing!

The back to school special this year ends on September 5th, the event is on September 7th. Wonder how pissed people would be if they were indeed announced two days later

They might want it in October to avoid backlash, justified or not

can't see them doing another event in October. They said goodbye to the Town Hall events in March, and renting out the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium again a couple of weeks after the Sept. event doesn't make much sense.

I know Gurman is usually on the ball, but I think that (if they are released this year) the new MBPS will be unveiled at the Sept. event and launch later, probably Oct.

It's good to see Apple try to make drastic changes to their laptop line. In the last few years Windows laptops have really stepped up their game in terms of design and value. Unless you're really plugged into the Apple ecosystem there is really no need to shell out the additional cash for an Apple laptop at this point.

Didn't say there was a limit, but both of us are citing historical precedent from Apple (correctly I should add) to make our points. Just wanted to point out they don't do 4 events a year, that's all :)

Believe me I want these things like yesterday. I've had money burning a hole in my pocket for months now and Apple doesn't want it.

i'm all but certain that I'll buy the maxed-out 13" MBP sku as soon as possible. My 2011 MBA has served honorably, but its time to upgrade.

give it to me, timb!
