More "news" from Macrumors- Apple Likely Aiming for Late October Launch of Redesigned MacBook Pro

MacRumors has learned that Apple is indeed moving rapidly toward a launch of the new MacBook Pro models, with the company's current development work on macOS 10.12.1 focused largely on preparing the operating system to support the updated hardware's new features, which have been rumored by several sources to include Touch ID support and an OLED "touch bar" replacing the current row of function keys across the top of keyboard. Apple is also said to be shifting to "Polaris" graphics chips from AMD on the higher-end 15-inch models.

I thought the processors Apple wanted weren't going to be available until early next year. I wonder if this means they're getting them earlier than everyone expected or if this means Apple is using older tech.

Has Apple received Intel processors this much earlier than the competition before? The only thing I can think of similar to this was the original MacBook Air.

It's probably gonna use sky lake. They may hop right back with a kaby lake version early next year but this'll be sky lake most likely.

I'm just hoping (probably in vain) it doesn't have the paper-thin rMB keyboard; the current MBA and rMBP have perfect key travel for me. If it does I'll probably just pick up a current-model MBPr and live with that.

My guess is it will have something akin to the Magic Keyboard, which is kind of a midpoint between the 12" MB and the current rMBP.

More rumors, still no actual release info: job listings suggest Nvidia is hiring people to work on upcoming Mac GPUs.

Given that they are just now hiring for a future project, these listings are almost certainly not related to the GPUs in the next MBP update, which are heavily rumored to be AMD. But I know many - including myself - have wanted Nvidia GPUs to return to the Mac given AMD's lackluster mobile GPUs as of late, so hey, silver lining.

Hmm my thought was that AMD is getting the contract this cycle with Nvidia getting it in the future, maybe around Volta time for a refresh?

Sandy Bridge was a month or three ahead of competition. Used to happen fairly often in the heyday.

If the 13" gets a resolution bump AND Kaby Lake, I might consider going with a 13" again. Would need a GPU with an L4 cache, however, and I don't think that's an option even in the dual cores yet, IIRC?

WTF 22 hours of battery life!? If that's what 60W on Kaby Lake gives at 1080p, then 24 hours of battery life is going to be a reality very soon.

...I'll be really pissed off if Apple misses out in favor of needlessly shaving off another couple of millimeters in thickness.

Yeah but those are not Anandtech measurements, but Dell proclamations.

It's "up to 22 hours" on a 1080p display, or "up to 13 hours" on a QHD+ display (3200×1800). And that's with a 56wh battery. Per how they did battery ratings last year, that means if you use the BrowsingBench test and run the display at 40% brightness, which is pretty silly.

Compare that to the existing 13" MBP which has a 63wh battery, a 2560x1600 display and Apple's realistic measurement, of 10hrs wifi browsing / 12hrs video, and reviews peg say, Netflix (video + wifi) at around 7 hours.

Realistically Dell is saying you can get up to 4 more hours @1080p, but under realistic brightness settings it's maybe half that. If anything I would expect to see a bigger gain on the MBP since they use a bigger battery anyway (except on discrete graphics, of course)

I was looking in the MacRumors forums and some are saying the Polaris dGPU that will most likely be in the 15" is the 480M. No benchmarks, but it's power consumption is 35w, perfect for Apple. Notebookcheck.net says it's a little faster than the 960M.

Better be 480M. If 15" doesn't with come with Kaby Lake, then at least 480M would be a huge boost from M370X. M370M was used with a Fermi architecture (2012)

Apple, my Discover card is ready to buy the new MacBook Pro 15" 2016.
