MacRumors has learned that Apple is indeed moving rapidly toward a launch of the new MacBook Pro models, with the company's current development work on macOS 10.12.1 focused largely on preparing the operating system to support the updated hardware's new features, which have been rumored by several sources to include Touch ID support and an OLED "touch bar" replacing the current row of function keys across the top of keyboard. Apple is also said to be shifting to "Polaris" graphics chips from AMD on the higher-end 15-inch models.
they're getting them earlier than everyone expected or if this means Apple is using older tech.
I think we know the answer to that.
Has Apple received Intel processors this much earlier than the competition before? The only thing I can think of similar to this was the original MacBook Air.

I'm just hoping (probably in vain) it doesn't have the paper-thin rMB keyboard; the current MBA and rMBP have perfect key travel for me. If it does I'll probably just pick up a current-model MBPr and live with that.
I think the correct answer is that they're going to use older hardware
The new Dell XPS 13 that's shipping in early October will have KabyLake processors. So most likely the new Macbook Pro's will be using those too. It's probably gonna use sky lake. They may hop right back with a kaby lake version early next year but this'll be sky lake most likely.
I believe Kaby is available now but the version that would be appropriate for the 15" Pro (historically speaking) isn't supposed to ship until 2017.
More rumors, still no actual release info: job listings suggest Nvidia is hiring people to work on upcoming Mac GPUs.
Given that they are just now hiring for a future project, these listings are almost certainly not related to the GPUs in the next MBP update, which are heavily rumored to be AMD. But I know many - including myself - have wanted Nvidia GPUs to return to the Mac given AMD's lackluster mobile GPUs as of late, so hey, silver lining.

XPS 13 uses MBA-class 15W chips.

WTF 22 hours of battery life!? If that's what 60W on Kaby Lake gives at 1080p, then 24 hours of battery life is going to be a reality very soon.XPS 13 uses MBA-class 15W chips.

...I'll be really pissed off if Apple misses out in favor of needlessly shaving off another couple of millimeters in thickness.
I was looking in the MacRumors forums and some are saying the Polaris dGPU that will most likely be in the 15" is the 480M. No benchmarks, but it's power consumption is 35w, perfect for Apple. Notebookcheck.net says it's a little faster than the 960M.
