A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

Sorry that you didn't find them funny, I think that the point was the thread needed to lighten up a little as people were just jumping down each others throats, I appreciate you didn't find it funny but hopefully it made a few people smile at least.

Oh well, back to the discussion, hopefully Sean and Hello will address the issues sooner rather than later.
Apologies. It probably came over a bit too rude on my part.

I thought the exact interactions has always been a mystery.

I really don't think giving them time is grasping at straws, as opposed to setting said straws on fire by calling him a liar like some are doing.
He said players can see other players. And that is all that people are now wanting to have confirmed but suddenly the devs are not responding anymore. No questions about further player interactions or anything. I don't think people had outlandish illusions as far as that goes. Just the slim chance of meeting other players (as in: seeing their avatars) is what many people dreamt of (inspired by what Sean said during many interviews).

GOOD AS NEW!!!

Nailed it.

Hahaha

Something that i didn't even think about asking before.

But does the game have day/night cycles? Weather? Seasons? Are there properties to the actual planets? like desert, ice, things like that that change the game around?

Are you trolling, dude? Sean has repeatedly stated that players will be able to meet each other, there's no mystery to that. Two Twitch streamers have tried to meet up and failed. The feature either doesn't exist or it doesn't work, and they should be able to tell us if a feature is momentarily broken.

If the feature does exist and Sean is being vague on Twitter to drum up publicity, then we should criticize him anyway for being a manipulative asshole.

He said they can meet, that doesn't say much for what they can actually do. Two players collide what happens? Has that been discussed?

I'm not trolling, grasping at straws etc. I'm giving them time, while you on the other hand have already queued another mean thing to call the guy, congrats.

Yes, we have observed day night cycles, blizzards ( not seasons)

Some planets are basically ice planets, toxic planets, volcanic planets, ocean planets, you know, the general planet types

Cool.

These kind of details really add to the immersion and experience of the game.

Dude, they are buying time with their radio silence in order to not impede sales. That's the most despicable part here.

And no, no one asked about collisions or other advanced interactions. People clearly asked about "seeing other players". Murray clearly stated in interviews that seeing other players is a thing. So, why being coy about it suddenly?

No seasons and no significant climate impact but yeah to the rest. It's all processed locally for each player though.

I would think that this has reached a level of concern that is no longer a tweet reply away of solving it. My guess is that they are preparing an official reply to this. Maybe that is why its taking so long? Not that it excuses the radio silence. Sean could very well just say "hey guys, an official reply to this incoming soon." Just acknowledging the concern.

Remind me how? Was the sheer existence of the multiplayer in Journey a mystery?
To be fair, many Journey players were positively surprised to learn that their partner in the game was actually another human player. So some definitely didn't realize that the game had secretly matched them with another player.

It's different for NMS though. Murray would've already destroyed that magic during the numerous interviews where he said meeting/seeing other players would be a thing.

Remind me how? Was the sheer existence of the multiplayer in Journey a mystery?
I followed the game closely prelaunch and multiplayer was not a secret. There was even a multiplayer beta (that I failed to get in :p). It was a core part of the game that the developers discussed extensively.

I'm calling it: Sean Murray will make an official statement on August 26, the day that the refund window (basically) closes for Steam pre-orders/day one buyers.

No the inner workings were, some people claim it was an emotional experience (paraphrasing podcasts, GiantBomb comes to mind).

Some games pave the way, NMS could be one of those games.

Remember that the devs said that the models were made and are there, just that we can't see ourselves, so for now we still can't see what our avatars look like.

Our only hope is the PC version, where people will hack the camera to look at themselves first thing. Or just pull it from the model/texture/etc. folders.

Friday is the day we get to look in the mirror, and what will we see?

I'm going with a floating Carl Sagan head, it's the only logical answer!

Having mysterious features/functionality is now bad? If this is a feature people will want it spoiler tagged if discovered. Game has been single player first and foremost for a long time.

LOL now we're calling this a "mysterious" feature? Nothing mysterious about the issue at hand. The feature is either in the game or isn't. Even if the method of getting it to occur is a mystery, they need to confirm if the feature is there now. Sean had no issue doing that leading up to release day, so what's the problem with doing the same now? They don't need to tell us how to trigger it. They need to just stop being so god damn shady and vague about it. Honestly, I'm guessing Sony's PR has put a muzzle on Sean at this point and won't even let him talk about. It's probably not a thing and they're being insidiously vague to not affect sales at launch. If it was something that's broken, or won't make it until a later patch, why wouldn't they just come out and say that? The answer: It's probably not a thing.

And seriously, I get that you guys like the game. But please stop being so ridiculous in trying to defend the dev/Sony. This is getting stupid dumb.

What do you mean you cant see yourself? If you look in water you dont see a reflection?

Based on the art you're a dude in a suit.

Calling it, we're actually sentinels bipedalers gone rogue with an amnesia problem

mysterious features that have been confirmed beforehand in interviews. So mysterious. Also they're basic gameplay features. We're not talking about the secrets the universe holds or secret places. We're talking about a standard gameplay feature.

For NMS the sheer existence of multiplayer (as in if there is any kind of real interaction between players) is a mystery, according to you. A confirmation that there is or there isn't a real interaction between players without describing the interaction and an eventual explanation why it hasn't happen with the players being at the same time in the same place in game would be enough. You get to keep your magic and people get the info that it's relevant for them.

As a bystander who doesn't know much about the game or even the complaints about it right now, I have to say that some of you expected way too much from this game. Expecting a super interconnected multiplayer online world where players can spontaneously run into each other in addition to the procedurally generated universe of planets is just not going to be pulled off the way you expect with a small indie team of 15 people.

I guess people expected to be able to run into each other because thats what the developer said. Crazy huh?

Here's a funny side note, I don't actually like this game. I just don't think attacking the devs calling them liars is a good look.

The fact that some people can't understand this is insane. It's a shame that the developer made people think it would happen.

If only their development team was more diverse!

My guess is that if there is the possibility of MP, there is a space/time component. This is the universe, after all.

They went through all this work for this game and something like that would be pretty cool. Perhaps it changes planets you've previously visited in some way, as well.

Alright this is getting out of hand.

First read the title.

We're mainly concerned with not being able to see each other. Nobody ever expected the game to be super interconnected multiplayer online especially those who are informed. However, we expect to see each other. This was a feature promised and has yet to be confirmed or denied with Sean not saying much about whether it exists or not.

What I expect is honesty and verification. Those who thought it was a MMO were grossly misinformed.

I don't want magic, MP is of no interest to me. I have other issues with this game that seeing another player would not help in anyway.

Sean Murrey has stated multiple times that you can SEE other players. So far, no one has SEEN another player, despite being in the exact same spot.

We aren't calling Sean a liar because we are rude meanies. We are calling him a liar because we think he LIED. People are spending $60 dollars on a game, they deserve to know the truth.

I can't think of a single other game that had people unsure if there was multiplayer or not when it released. I don't know whether to think of this predicament as a huge marketing blunder or just absolute brilliance.

what would you call it if sean repeatedly made promises that he never walked back and turned out to be factually untrue?

I'm going to give it a month or so until I get actually pissed about this. Didn't we have to do the same for the fifth instalment of an open world game with a huge budget and staff?

Unless the MP has some weird element that would be ruined by explaining exactly what it entailed, even if they deliver later, they fucked up by not being up front earlier.

They promised a feature all the way up to launch. Now that it seems to be completely missing people are asking for an answer. Have we got one that isn't so vague that it answers nothing? If Hello Games/Sony don't want to be called out as liars all they have to do is just answer the question. This is on Hello Game's and their promises. Not the consumers who purchased NMS based on their promises. Sounds like people are just calling it as they see it. They could put an end to this at any time and they haven't yet. Wonder why they haven't yet? Seems pretty obvious to me right now.

And I'm not suggesting they have been telling us lies this entire time. There are a billion good reasons a feature like this could have to be cut or delayed. But when this does happen you can't avoid questions and try to sweep it under the rug. It makes you look bad, which is why people are calling them out. Again, stop going to ridiculous lengths to defend the dev. You guys wouldn't do this shit for anything else. Oh, Amazon only shipped half the order they charged you for, and customer support won't answer your questions about it? I guess just rebuy everything missing again! Calling them out on it would not be a good look! Sigh...

I think the issue is that there's literally nothing new to discuss, so it's just people going back and forth over the small amount of info we have, getting more and more belligerent on both sides ("people who are mad are like GamerGate" WHAT and "Sean is a lying piece of shit" UHM).

Plenty of people thought the diversion was fun, and now that it's passed, the same posters are reiterating the points they have a dozen times before.

I don't think anyone is ok with multiplayer being a secret feature

multiplayer is such a big deal that historically games show multiplayer options on the box. it's not something you can be coy about. it is or it isn't
