Still nothing more than opinion an hence, a matter of taste.

I'm pretty sure this is obvious to you and everybody but it's cool that you can write a long, detailed post on why you find 'thing' uninteresting. It still does not mean everyone finds 'thing' uninteresting.

"How could this reviewer give the game an 8/10 if he pointed out so many things I don't find interesting about it? " Well maybe those are the things he was looking for in this game.

But, again, I don't think this is (or at least it shouldn't be) a new concept for anyone.

Hello Games has not made a universe.
They have made what LOOKS like a universe, but there is no interaction between anything.
The AI, the environments, the races, nothing does anything. Everything sits there or walks in place.
If you literally just sit there and look at something, nothing will ever happen.
The player is the ONLY thing that does anything in this game and his/her impact on the universe are tiny and have no actual impact.

It is not a universe, it just looks like one.


Even Elite Dangerous has a so called "background simulation".
In No Man Sky, nothing is connected to anything.

I've been thinking about this, and to me (and a few others) this is quite a big deal.

Now maybe, just maybe, those of us in the same boat are just spending too much time looking 'behind the curtain' and seeing the thing for what it really is, where as those that are really on board with the game can dispel this issue and just let the game wash over them?

I don't know, but the way the game was laid out was that the universe had certain laws, I expected a universe where things made sense at a base level, that the mathematics engine adhered to rulesets and created a world that was coherent.

It's one of the many big issues with the game for me but maybe it's one that could be adjusted by tweaking the formula? Or is that a change to far considering how much of an affect it would have on people's existing game?

Because the point he was making was that people who thought it was bad couldn't understand why other people thought it was good. Not that they couldn't explain why they themselves thought it was bad.
 
71 average on Metacritic so far seems about accurate to me from what I have played so far. I would give it a 6 or 7, with the potential to be higher with future updates.

FYI though. I don't hate the game. I think it can be fun actually. It just has issues that make me not feel comfortable telling others to buy it,
 
Space stations are kind of odd. You see spacecraft flying into it and other ships in the hangar at times but you only ever see the one lonely alien in the station. At least have some others sitting in the chairs or even walking about so it doesn't seem so barren.

There's just something about it. Whether it's the idea of the game, atmosphere, the pure size of it, the fact it really makes me feel like I'm actually in a starship traveling across space and it's so realistic. I don't know what this game is but I love it. It's exactly how I've always imagined traveling through space to be as a kid. Even the weird sounds you hear, the openness of the planets, everything seems great. Sure, others had different expectations and others had hype but I was never on board with this hype train. While I've always wanted to play it, I was just never in "OMFG THIS IS THE GAME OF THE GENERATION I NEED THIS BAD" mode and what do you know, it's come out far better than I expected.

I'm going to be playing this for a very very long time. Love it.

How can you say that!? Don't you know that to praise this game is to endorse Sean Murray, the deceiver's, lies? Procedural generation is the devil's playground. For you to state your beliefs so plainly casts serious aspersions upon your character. Me personally, I curse the day your mother ever met your father.

This is me too. I truly want to like this game but it feels more random PGC than structured or logical application for your game experience. Perhaps there is more to this game and it's being left to unravel as a mystery for players to find but the hook and execution thus far hasn't got me pulling the trigger as yet. The concept is great, I'm not so sure the game itself has me. The last year I've literally been wondering what you do in this game, I still feel like that isn't answered with any clarity.

In Aus this game pushes $60USD on steam so it's already raising my expectations of what should be delivered. If they come out and look something like what 343 did over the 9 months of Halo5 content releases them I'm all for it, will buy right away and say congrats to the devs.
 
I've tossed in about 20hrs so far on PS4 here's some thoughts.

-I have explored maybe 10 planets from 3 solar systems, animal life has been really the same, most show discovered but already discovered a type of that species.

-the current planet I'm on is a beautiful blue grass normal atmosphere earth like place, it has fish, scarab beetle, and weird-o-vores so far. The largest creature has been on par with a bison I'd say.

-I've made a point of hitting every capsule I find to add space to my suit since the inventory management is evil.

-On inventory, I am fine with the stacks of minerals, but the sheets/orbs/etc really should have stacked too, it's annoying as hell needing 5 of something and being stuck with it using your whole bag.

-Repairing/maintaining items is tedious, I spend way more time in my inventory then I should be.

-I really like the discovery of words and making out what aliens are trying to say, it's a small feeling of progression.

-I am really bothered by how every planet I've been to has outposts etc already on it and the sentinels are dicks, why are they everywhere? Why do I get credit for finding things when they are busy scanning stuff and shoot me when I kill a bug thing that attacks me?

-Flying is kinda cool, but the draw distance and pop-in is brutal on PS4, it's fine on foot but in air zomg... I don't even think you can make out creatures as soon as you are moving?

-Stuff seems really repetitive, discovery is neat but uploading one at a time is brutal, I don't care to name everything, so a batch upload would be cool(maybe I'm missing something here?)

-Aiming is jank as hell lol

-There's a sinister plot opening up with dialog from certain abandoned bases etc which I hope leads to something.

I think at this point after reading some spoilers I'm sort of just left with hope; hope that once you hit center things change, maybe a few center hits big changes?

I mean if I hit mid, and still find 6 legged deer version 5000 and there's no sight of something developing regarding the "plot" or answering any questions of purpose of the aliens and sentinels, I donno if I wanna keep pursuing a dream sort of thing?

I've also had some really aggravating crashes that set me back already, which sucks.

I'm remaining slightly optimistic but if nothing really happens or changes down the line time to nope out imho

I lost a good deal of subscribers today because I rated it a Wait for Sale but was live playing it to show people different aspects I still liked. There is absolutely no fucking middleground.

The hype/trolling around this game obscures what it is and does no-one any good.

I fully understand why people enjoy skinner box designs. They literally exist to make you feel good psychologically. That doesn't make them good.

I really love this game but I would still be reluctant giving it blanket approval. I like weird, quirky, original games and this fits the bill perfectly for me, but it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

Great for some. Not so great for others. Go in informed.

It's about as far from Skinner box design as you can get. There's next to no instant gratification in this game, that's one problem some people have with it. What are you talking about?

You know what? You may have lost a great good deal of subs but man, you have gained a great deal of respect from others in their place. Especially from me. I know that doesn't help much financially in the short term but it's those whom respect you who will stick around for the long haul.
 
As much as I love the game, there's definitely issues, but I've also accepted that this is not a game everyone is going to get or like. That's fine. If everyone liked the same things the world would be less fun. I'm just shocked that I'm enjoying a resource managment based game as much as I am.

The inability to understand that someone can still find fun in something that they DONT want to rush off and tell others to get without serious thought its insane.

The skinner box isn't just about instant gratification, it's also about performing repetitive actions on the hope that there may be something good round the corner.

That's not a good description of the game at all. I mean you could be vague enough to say every game involves hitting buttons and getting rewards , but most other games have a much more direct action-reward relationship than this. If anything it's the lack of a reward in this game that fails to scratch that itch for people.

I mean, think what you like about the game, but it's a very poor characterisation of an ostensibly ambient sort of experience.

They mentioned the Minecraft model which I think would be a good fit I know they've said anything added would be free. Next update will be adding base building so far that's all we know

People can be utterly absurd. That's a really sensible rating, too, especially considering how divisive and potentially niche the game is. (I've got friends who normally enjoy this sort of game not clicking with NMS, and other friends who usually hate it having a blast.) I've been really enjoying watching people's live streams of the game, too, I hadn't realised ACG had done another one. Will catch up!

People saying 'it gets good after 20hrs' or 'person x found this really cool planet with really cool shit on it' or 'you're just unlucky to find barren copy and paste planets, with 18 trillion planets there is bound to be something good' or 'the trailer showed this cool sandworm cutting it's way through a planet, I want to find that', is all the positive reinforcement some people need

That's not positive reinforcement though, not in terms of operant conditioning.

I'm not arguing over the merits or otherwise of the game, more on the flagrant misappropriation of psychological terminology. The pigeon isn't like 'well I'll keep pecking this lever, nothing's happening, but hey I reckon it might'.
 
I think I may go ahead and unload this while I can get some decent trade and pick up the pc version later if they actually bring some worthwhile improvements

He has a favorite loot planet. Named it "Loot Planet" in his discoveries. Then he couldn't find it in the Galactic map to return to it. Was very frustrated that he couldn't run a search you show its location.

Then he got lucky and found it since he knew he was close. He warped to it then tried to add a Way point by hitting Square, but he couldn't after traveling there. You can only set way point to a system you are not currently at. He raged over that pretty hard.
