NYT: Republicans close to Trump say he's "exhausted, frustrated and bewildered"

CT today. He went off script again, confirming NYT's garbage reporting.

"That whole freedom of speech thing? Garbage. Bad stuff. We're going to get rid of it'

*LOUD APPLAUSE*

Thanks, didn't quite remember it being such a serious discussion point. What a stroke of genius from the McCain campaign, putting out a narrative so stupid and effective their own candidate has to diffuse it.

That's not exactly what happened.

I have no sympathy for the republican party. The dems handed you 2016 wrapped in a bow and you still figured a way to fucking blow it.

I expected the republicans to do some deep soul searching after 2012's ass kicking and really figure out a way to adapt their platform to modern sensibilities with fresh alternatives to the flaws they see in their opponents ideology.

I thought they'd finally start to engage with minority communities and embrace social changes and realize the futility in fighting them like babies.

And what do we get? Donald Fuckng Trump. And this "crazy" outsider who I thought at first might drag the republicans kicking and screaming to the middle just went full off the grid-writing a manifesto in the woods of Montana-crazy.

I can't put it on Trump alone. Sadly it's the culmination of years of pandering to bigots. Doing their best to stomp on rights except those valued by their mostly white base.

I don't want a de facto single party system. But republicans brought this mess on themselves. Congrats. Don't cry now. Enjoy it. It's everything you worked hard for. This is what your rugged individualism got ya.

Every time I see transcripts of him talking, it's like reading the ramblings of a lunatic. He doesn't seem to know proper grammar, he repeats things over and over, and then goes off on totally different tangents.

Like that last one, he goes from talking about ballots, to Dannel Malloy, to General Electric moving to Mexico, in like two sentences. What? It's bewildering.

Aren't nonsensical speech patterns often present in serious mental illnesses? I'm not asking this as a generic diss to trump or out of disrespect for people with mental illnesses... I'm genuinely curious if there could be something there.

I showed my sister one of those transcripts and she said pretty much the same thing. 😕

One thing I noticed, and Romney did this too, is that he always keep coming back to the crowds as a useful metric of support. That right away should clue people in that he's an idiot mostly living in his own bubble. That means absolutely nothing, especially in the general.

That might matter in Iowa or NH where you're fighting with a dozen other candidates, or for optics reasons like when Rubio drew that nothing crowd in Florida or when Romney spoke at an empty Ford Field.

But really, in the general it means NOTHING. And it definitely shouldn't be a reason to ignore all the advice thrown your way.

Anyone that watched the Netflix Romney documentary knows how convinced they were that they were going to win and they were floored when they got stomped and it's the same thing now with Trump.

Can't wait for this experiment to be over

Such an amazing and interesting election cycle. Even though I'm voting for him, the harder he falls the better off America will be for it.

I'm watching the Trump rally in Fairfield, Connecticut and he is just a mess. He is now bitching to the audience about if he looses the election he will never forgive them for wasting his time and money and not winning. What a damn looney toon... Now he is kicking out a protestor and saying she looks like Hillary and yelling, "Bye, Hillary. Get her out of here! Say hi to Bill for me!"

This is such a mess that the fact he's holding a rally in Fairfield Connecticut isn't even close to the biggest problem.

The link in your tag is the single stupidest thing I've ever read on gaf.

And son, that competition is fierce.

We're supposed to vote for him because if he'd feel bad if he lost...?

He is literally a manchild.

I feel like he's actually having a nervous breakdown at this point. He can't handle the pressure. Sad! Weak Donald Trump can't handle a real election!

The way he talks about the press is so unsettling. I get it, lots of politicians blame the media and whatnot. But he goes to such extremes to dehumanize the press. Calling them the lowest form of humanity and goading his supporters by pointing out the press with sneering mockery. There's been reports of reporters having to be escorted out of his rallies by the Secret Service because of riled up and angry supporters.

Media bashing may be effective in the primaries to rally the base in an "us against them" way, but in the general far fewer people care about the subject. At some point whining about the media just sounds like whining.

It was a pretty intense rally. He was insulting the people there and the people of CT quite a bit towards the end. Condemning them for electing Malloy and Murphy(?). He went on a bit of a rant about Malloy and at one point, people stopped cheering.

Regardless of what the approval ratings of these guys are, you can't go into a deeply blue state, bash everyone, and expect to get their vote.

It was quite a spectacle.

The only logical explanation here is that he decided to do his own thing (saying outrageous things and owning the media cycle) because it worked in the primaries and now after the falling poll numbers he's "exhausted, frustrated and bewildered" that it's not working out. I am sure plenty of people would have given him some good advice but he chose to reject it. He simply doesn't know what is required for a GE campaign, but then again you don't need to be an Einstein to know you have to behave like a decent human being to attract independents and new voters. He's already blaming biased media who are just reporting the things he said and is already talking about "rigging". You know after the convention bounce he got a few weeks ago, I was kinda worried that he may pivot and Hillary might be in serious trouble due the hacks but the meltdown has been glorious. I can't wait for the debates.

What a shockingly bad candidate the GOP have nominated.

The Trump News network. That's what this is all angling towards. For the truly unbiased/unskewed news, you go to Trump himself. He's looking to beat Fox at its own game. Which may actually be viable with Ailes gone. Maybe he brings Ailes on-board!

This would be a frightening end game.

Wat.

He also managed to tell the people of CT they couldn't sell their houses, even if they wanted to, because no one would want to buy them.

This. He's having a nervous breakdown. I wouldn't be surprised if he bows out in spectacular fashion in the next week or so.

The most disturbing thing is that it's apparently extremely effective at riling up his base. Here's a grown man yelling at and flipping off the press pen after one Trump rally. He's not the only one.

While Trump is on track to lose badly in November, this kind of poisoning people will have a longer tail. It makes sense for him, if he really buys into his rally crowds meaning victory, since it guarantees they'll never accept his bullshit being exposed in reports, but it'll have gross effects after his loss. I know media distrust has always been there, but he's really stoking it up to a level of personal hatred that's alarming.

It's particularly interesting since he spent so much time tonight decrying them and then uses a positive article as proof he'll be superior to Clinton.

I posted this elsewhere but I'm copying it here

Of all the recent scandals, I think the "rigged" thing is going to hurt Trump the most. Not because it's super absurd (although it is).

It hurts him for a few reasons. One, Americans don't like whiners. We just don't. It undercuts his message as a strong man who wins, wins, wins. Now, he's admitting he's going to lose because FRAUD! It's not a good look. Secondly, it cements a narrative. It's unpresidential, yes, but it also reinforces the idea that he is losing. Bigly. Why would a person who is really winning be bitching about fraud and shit? Thirdly if people actually want to think about "Is this election being rigged?" it draws us back to the only actual attempts at swaying the election--the Russian hacks. Finally, it's damaging because it has the potential to decrease Trump's turnout. There's no ground game to harass people into voting.
