E3 Walkthrough: "Completely unscripted planet chosen at random!"

It's in a folder called 'screenshots' though?
And the planet 1, 2, 3 aren't in the E3 folder.

Remember how just asking "But what do you actually DO in No Man's Sky?" got so many people up in arms?

Because for many, having to answer that question and/or see that deflated some of their hype, and hype is all that matters. Hell, I've lost track of the number of times I've seen people in OTs complaining that people criticizing the game need to leave the topic. Some people just want an echo chamber of endless hype and positivity about a thing they've decided they're going to like.

Not sure how this changes anything about the what do you do discussion. The answer continues to be the same as it always has. Land on planets, gather resources, upgrade, get units, buy ships, explore, move onto the center. Though there are clearly many elements (and the execution) that fell short, but that doesn't really give anymore merit or validity to the people asking the question. Not to say it lacked merit, because it's a fair question for someone who really doesn't know, but presenting that question in an attempt to spite any side of the discussion is fruitless.

I haven't even had a chance to play it yet but this stuff is really making me not even want to open it. I may just return it.

For the same price I got this limited edition, I could buy Luigis Mansion + Animal Crossing 3DS, plus Lego City Undercover and Wind Waker HD for Wii U. Those 4 games vs this...

Your choice pal - and that naturally sounds like way better value - although if you're into Animal Crossing you'd probably enjoy NMS. Pop into the OT for some different impressions. There's a cool community developing.

You.

Yes, you. The one screaming, "There's no multiplayer!" and "Sean Murray lied to us!" and other slurs I dare not mention.

Tread lightly.

You are one. We are hundreds, thousands, Millions. You aren't just IN the minority; you ARE the minority.

And, y'know... This is why reviews exist. It's not like he asked for Kickstarter money or anything. Everyone had the opportunity to read critical impressions before purchasing. (I'm not 100% familiar with when the review embargo was listed compared to when the game launched, but, well, this is why preorders are dumb in most cases.)

Review copies were never given and the reviews were only able to give us information days after release. They had to take their time to review the game. I don't see how this argument holds at all.

It's lacking the collecting/hoarding aspect of AC but it has a nice relaxed vibe. Can be nice to chuck some music on and explore a few planets.

it's going to be fun to see how people continue to defend hello games.

Because this kind of list is crap. I don't know how developers are ok with the blatant attacks this game gets on features that didn't make it into the game. I hope, at some point, other devs come to the the aid of Murray and his team because this type of witch hunt is created just to kill a game studio because some don't like the game or didn't like that a game was getting so much hype.

Small teams need to market their games and need to show unfinished version of their game to get any sort of market space. Leeway needs to be given to any team to make the right decisions on whats best for their game. I understand the multiplayer complaint but most of this is list is just petty and hate. NMS sycophants are disgusting but so are the people on the other side who are trying to destroy the game studio who spent 3 years trying to create their game.

My disappointment with the game is mostly to do with the flight mechanics. Having the planets all so close together makes the space flight seem more like a loading screen than a simulation of space flight, I think I would have prefered jumping between orbits and some more realistic physics.

The in atmosphere flight was immediately disappointing when I jumped in the ship (had to change the controls to be the correct way for flight - should have been a red flag) and tried to fly under an arch, only to find there was a floor I couldn't close to the ground.

One of the few 'wow' moments to do with spaceflight is if a dogfight takes you from space into the atmosphere and back again. It's really cool when that happens and makes space feel more like an actual playspace. I don't feel the same way about it as you but I absolutely understand why you feel this way.

And christ, yeah, I hope they add a setting to remove the safety buffer on planets. It's really annoying always being 100 feet in the air and not being able to fly through canyons.

Okay, I think I'm done until the next patch drops. I got another freeze today after it being fine for a couple days. I already hit the full 48 inventory slots on my exosuit, I'm just getting tired of the crashes for seemingly random reasons. This game clearly wasn't ready for release, and I think Sony had a hand in pushing it out early.

Still having a blast 25 hours (or so) in and havent done any of the "story" stuff...

But I'm wrong. No, Ill admit it, Im happy Im able to enjoy this game but Im kind of wrong for doing so. I dont think its a bad game, just did not live up to promises and expectations, and in many ways the devs mislead the audience to believe that features were there that aren't, and Sean hasn't responded to the public apologizing or clarifying, which is what perturbs me the most.

I wont apologize for liking the game, but I have to say people are right to be pissed. Its pretty clear they did lie (deceive). Even if everything they had promised had been in the game, it still would have been lacking.

Its such a shame because Sean was I guy I wanted to cheer for, and Hello Games I wanted to succeed. But, not like this. This is success at the expense of true artistic pursuit. I dont know whether or not this is wholly political, or a cash grab, or they were just burnt out developing the game, but its pretty clear that it needed more time and absolutely needed to implement everything they talked about.

As it stands, Im probably going to put a few more hours in, get to the center, and get a badass ship and call it quits. I think thats pretty good for a game so im pretty satisfied.

Yeah, the in atmosphere flight is really the biggest disappointment for me. I really hope it gets retooled in the future, because it could potentially be an incredible amount of fun

At least have a toggle or something, so you can have the safe flying we have now or just the ability to nose dive into the ground. I'll repair the ship, just give me the opportunity to break it

That's not true.

Fine let me correct this. Review copies were not given before the launch day to allow for a review to be posted before the game launched for people to read and find out about the game such that they had the "critical impressions" that the quote I was responding to.

Question:

Do you have, even the slightest understanding of the actual point of this thread, and the list, and the post.

Do you? Or have you convinced yourself this is one giant smear campaign by "haters"?

Think about it for a second.

People, WHO OWN AND ARE PLAYING THE GAME, are compiling a list of features that were either promised/mentioned/alluded to by either the marketing or by Sean himself.

Not random haters who don't like it because they want to see the studio die, or mad that it got so much hype.

The actual paying customers. Who are now wondering where all the features they had heard and seen demostrated to them went.

This isn't "Oh why can't this game be more like "random thing here the developer never mentioned".

It's more "Hey, where the fuck is the passive multiplayer? Whatever happened to sand planets? What happened to the faction system?" Etc. Things advertised, some by Sean himself. And they're not here. And no one in any position of authority is giving a straight answer. Or even any answer.

Do you not realize that words have meanings?

Meanings aren't clear-cut I'm afraid. If there's one thing a degree in linguistics teaches you, it's that language is complex, multifaceted and amorphous. Despite society's attempts to codify it, it remains elusive and rarely clear-cut - especially in informal discussions like this.

If is has water in it, if it's a winding groove in the land, and it has fish, you can call it a river if you want. It's the individual's prerogative. A lot of people don't associate 'current' with river.

Said it before and I'll say it again.
Molyneux and Wright had great games under their belt. This was pure marketing hype from a largely unproven developer.

Mm-hmm.

This seems to be pretty compelling. The amazing thing is that Sean Murray has managed to simultaneously acknowledge and disregard the complaints in one of his tweets.

my only problem is the lack of being able to see other people. im sure ill get flack for it but we all know he said it was possible, even if not the point of the game.

Review copies were not given before the launch day

Still not true I'm afraid.

But you're right that they didn't give enough time for reviewers to gather solid impressions.

Regardless - launch-day reviews aren't a prerequisite. Why not just wait until reviews have landed? You don't need to get the game day one or week one.

Really? There were review copies given before the release day? I did not hear of this

if you have to post what you did, then i dont think you can say the game was worth it

If only there were some means to communicate with fans and manage expectations prior to release. If only the same means existed to communicate with fans post-release. If only.

I'm kinda surprised at how simple the platinum trophy seems to be, I've gotten like 3/4ths of the trophies towards it already and have maybe played 15 hours so far. I've enjoyed the game for what it is, just a fly around as an explorer doing random shit taking care of my ship and suit with no real goals in mind. Still, glad i bought it physically on console since I will definitely be trading it in when I am done.

You do constantly get a lot of "man... it would be so cool if the game did THIS other thing right here" in pretty much every aspect of the game, like I just thought about how awesome it would be just being able to mine stuff in space from asteroids from your ship without ever having to make planetfall, and that warping your body eventually ala Belters from The Expanse. Then real space stations, real aliens, etc. Oh well, someday...

That list was longer than I expected... I thought it was just multiplayer haha

FWIW most of the features mentioned in the list are quality of life features, not features core to the experience. The broadest descriptions of the game provided by Murray are almost exactly how the game turned out.

It's pretty flawed, but it's very close to the broad vision outlined.

Minecraft rivers do have currents though.

Did they have currents at launch?

Couldn't Sean and his team just patch all those missing features in; along with all-new content and wishlist-features?

Wouldn't that make everyone perfectly happy?

And the planet 1, 2, 3 aren't in the E3 folder.
It's just a joke about how everything they showed at these events was scripted even though they said it wasn't.

Remnants of these demos still exist in the final build of the game.

The game was already delayed two months. To promise that the game might be finished a year or two from now won't make much of a difference in the present, especially considering the game's price of $60. If the game's finally finished a long time from now when it costs $1 in a Humble Bundle, I don't think people who bought it at launch are going to be all that happy.

Essentially the game is an early access title being sold for 3x as much as most early access titles.

I went into this game playing it for 20+ hours thinking that getting to the center of the universe would actually mean something and be worthwhile. Because as far as objectives go, that's the only objective you've really got the entire game.

Spoiler alert:
it's not worth it

If only game development was that easy...
This is a huge issue I have with all of the people suggesting they'll just keep patching a bunch of content in over time.

The day 1 patch for the game seemed like a bigger deal than it actually was, and it required people to start from scratch if they wanted to experience any of the patched content.

If we expect orbits, new buildings, factions, improved AI, etc... later down the line, how likely is it that they can actually patch this content in without it messing up our game saves and requiring us to start over. Any time Minecraft changes something in its procedural generation and adds new content, everybody has to start over from scratch, otherwise the previously used seed can't generate the new content without removing player-created content.

I know that after the first patch they said they wouldn't be resorting to deleting player saves. But how likely is it that they can make any major changes to the game if this is the case?

Yeah, I've definitely had this. A lot of 'it would be cool if I could do this' moments. Too many, TBH.

I think there's a solid chance this will happen.

That's not a current, it's an object moving to fill a space

It is a current. If you are standing in it it pushes you in a direction that is showed case in the texture scrolling. It also moves and fills in a space. It might be primitive looking, but it behaves like water should. At least in principle.

Curious to see what happens to that body of water in NMS. If you dig around it will it fill in that space? Does it have current?
