Read the name as Zenyatta and was confused. Don't know Zendaya but given the photos here, she seems to be pretty kewl? MJ is supposed to be a supermodel and this girl fits visually for that. She might not be red headed but eh, that's not something that should break the movie.

Zenyatta the racehorse?.... I mean that would be an interesting spin on the Spiderman universe for sure.

If I were in the US I would be a minority but I'm not mad because I haven't been made into a comic book character.
How entitled do you have to be to think like that because you're minority you need to be treated different than the rest? Where's the equality in things now?
are you a real person

Some of you are getting oddly defensive over people wanting red hair.

Peter Parker could be blonde to me. It'd be a little weird, but I wouldn't freak--

That (shop?) of her with red hair and her blonde wig look igly. Her skin naturally lends itself well to dark brown/black hair. Her original hairstyle and color look way better on her.

If they already casted a different race they may as well let her look like herself, maybe a dark auburn could work but light colors like mjs fire red would not come off well. Then again makeup dept can do wonders so what do i know.

After being underwhelmed by Kirsten Dunst for 3 movies, I'm keeping my expectations low on this one.

Unless Holland and Zendaya get together, have a nasty breakup and do nothing to hide how nasty it was, I doubt we'll be in any danger of witnessing any anti-chemistry with these two.

lol

Honestly, I feel like Zendaya could pull off any hair color.

She once wore a blonde wig for some magazine cover and she looked great.

A person more skilled with photoshop could probably red tint that. I did a "so shitty I didn't even save it" mock up and she looked fine with red hair.

I realize MJ having red hair isn't an absolute necessity or anything, but still.

I think "where's the equality in things now" really says it all.
Giving minority actors the same level of roles as white ones = inequality? Okay.

Let me get this straight, just so we're on the same page. You believe that any adaptation of a source material that was created years ago, where almost every major character is white, should stick to those choices. And not only that, but by changing a white character into a minority is on the same level as changing a minority character into a white one?

I wish they were, some actors just can't play the role. At least they tried casting someone physically similar to the comic book character.

Did they?

Let's take Robbie Robertson.

If your only criteria is "black", then sure, Bill Nunn covers it! But Robbie is rather tall and thin. He's a lean character, partially due to the fact that he stays in shape based on his past on the streets. They would've been better off with someone like Andre Braugher.

Bill Nunn is... not that.

Flash Thompson is a redhead himself. Joe Manganiello was not. Neither was rather blonde Chris Zylka.

Neither of those actors looks anything alike really. And these days, most adaptations make Flash blonde, like his very first appearance in Amazing.

Is skin tone the only bar? Hair color? General build? Characterization? What's the line?

The more familiarity people have with characters the more hesitant they are with radical departures.

Do most people don't really have a familiarity with MJ? Most can even describe her as a character outside of being a model and the famous "Tiger" quote. Many don't even know she was the second girlfriend, after Gwen.

Cool with it. Red hair would be nice but eh, no biggie.

Just kinda wished they'd saved MJ for college-era. Give Liz Allan some time to shine if Gwen was off the table because of the last series of films.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Could work but I absolutely do not see the Flash Thompson casting working which I just saw from the set photos and stuff. They got that allllllll the way wrong and through virtue of the swap, I doubt they're gonna depict Flash's dad as an abusive alcoholic. Or Flash as an alcoholic or any of that so why even bother with the character.

What the hell is the problem with them being white in the first place?

Glad to see this. I like that Marvel obviously doesn't feel that picking the best person for the role had to have a ethnicity checkbox.

Smh this is why white actresses don't even get a chance to get good roles

Basically. When was the last time you saw a white actress in the lead role in a romantic comedy or superhero film?

Oh wait, did you say "white?" Fuck, I though that was "Asian." Weird. Gotta stop skipping over words.

Why do people keep talking about the redhair, who the fuck cares.

I mean, some or visual purists. That's understandable. Some people want Wolverine to wear this onscreen.

I can't really judge them.

Ben is the best.

Nothing. Marvel as a studio wants the movies to reflect their general intended audience and the world they live in. Given the origins of many of these properties when minorities generally didn't get starring roles, they're left with a deficit.

Since they prize the name over just doing a different character, this is the fix studios have decided on.

Maybe Zendaya can bring some depth to Mj. Out of the many, many, many loves of Spiderman she was my least favorite.

Does it really matter? Flash has been nothing but a cameo at best in his previous incarnations in the other films. They have the freedom to do whatever the hell they want with him and it would still be a big step up over previous incarnations.
