Zendaya's role in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING has been revealed!

What the hell is the problem with them being white in the first place?

None? Giving more major roles to minority characters is good, but that doesn't mean casting a white actor for a typically white role is a problem.

You're making it out to be some sort of war against whiteness, which doesn't exist.

This woman looks like she is almost 30 or older.
She is 17 I think, she does look older there but she also is an easy person to pass as a highschool teenager. but like Grizzly said, she cant really act, Zendaya has an electric personality in her tv roles.

People who think Ben > Peter had dads who thought Clyde Drexler was better than Michael Jordan

bad home training

I'ma count off the number of times Ben Reilly made a deal with Mephisto to erase his marriage and the life of his daughter so he could continue a creepy child-like existence with his twice deceased Aunt May.

You'll find in a lot of cases it'll be a smokescreen for "white." Not all of 'em. But a lot of 'em.
Seriously. Peter has many beautiful women of all hair colors in his life. The blonde the red head and the brunette are all important to Peter becoming who he is. They don't technically have to be those colors but I think this girl can pull off red head so she should. I'm not asking her to be replaced just her hair color.

Her hair color is a central part of her character lmfao just say you wish she were white

For real.

Wait this is a documentary movie now?

Yeah that would be a cool movie, this is a Spider Man movie though?

If I were in the US I would be a minority but I'm not mad because I haven't been made into a comic book character.
How entitled do you have to be to think like that because you're minority you need to be treated different than the rest? Where's the equality in things now?
I was like you once. Here's the thing, we, as latin american, come from a minority-less culture. There is racism here of course, but it's kept for the lesser of the less as our genes are so mixed to the bone that it becomes ridiculous; we're all the same patch of people, we're all one bunch.

That's not the case in the US, people have been living in oppression for centuries, for them it's like their country doesn't belong to them, the media treats them like zoo animals and caricatures, the authorities disrespect them, the world doesn't understand their struggles.

Representation means to people they are being acknowledged as part of the society, it means they are not being ignored and erased from the depiction of the very world they are part of. It's not hard to be empathic with the sentiment, it the end, it's the right thing.

Understandable.

Good thing Quesada and Slott never got to Reilly.

*empties ashtray into the garbage* more than Ben deserved

I'm not familiar with the actress, but from a cursory Google search I think she'll put a fine spin on the MJ character with a fresh new look. Along with a hot Italian younger Aunt May I think this Spidey movie will fit right in Queens NY setting.

However, I don't get the posters eagerly salivating for salt. The overall online response to this looks generally positive (at least from what I've been reading in the past hour). Most of the critical comments are along the lines of just keeping her ioconic red hair.

This is the first Spider-Man movie that I'll be eagerly looking forward to since the first one with Tobey M.

same amount of times Ben Reily did anything relevant besides dying

Definitely not an STD, as I'm a pure.
We talking about the girl from the acne treatment commercials? She looks pretty white to me, but maybe has some mixed races in her genes

zendaya-coleman-x-out-wash-in-acne-treatment-lead.jpg

She's mixed black/white, which in America means you're black and supposed to identify that way. Also black people come in many shades of colors from dark to damn near white.

What's the issue with not being white? Maybe the casting directors didn't care about race and saw a ton of female actresses, and this one was the best. Maybe just maybe her blackness didn't get her the roll, but instead, for once, it didn't disqualify her from it.

I do like it when GAF responds like this...

...and not like this. I do see where you're comin' from though, YHC.

Why do people keep talking about the redhair, who the fuck cares.
Why do people talk about the Hulk being green?

Liking or not liking the casting is one thing but ignoring that MJs redhair is one of her main and iconic features is just silly.

Of course people talk about the red hair when its about MJ.

How shitty is a character that the most essential thing is the color of their hair?
He didn't say it was the most essential thing. Just that it's essential. It is pretty much the only essential physical trait she has though. That and be attractive if they end up having her be a model.

uhhhhhhh

ummmmmmm

hmmm

um

hoooo

well

Edit: Wooooooooooo top of the page. Um

Yeah I think the movie will probably be pretty good. Lets wait and see.

Man these kind of posts are eye-roll worthy. Maybe even two consecutive clockwise spins.

Rather have no red hair than dye it. Natural redheads rather than painting one's hair but eh.
Edit: I mean in the storyline.

Also no more MJ model character. It's high school time! Don't know how to feel about that. Everybody looks really young, like they are freshmen in HS.

I dunno, red hair seems to be the most important thing to most people here, which tells me that character always been shit.

Cool, Marvel has done a great job casting. People who get upset over looks or race have some inner demons to overcome.

She doesn't have red hair in that post of mine you're quoting.

EDIT: now I'm just staring at that gif again

I think people are making this discussion really unnecessarily toxic. Every actress to play MJ so far has had to dye her hair red. The vast majority of posters here seem to be fine with or even pleased with the casting choice, so why is it suddenly controversial to want red dye?

She could always you know........

FUCKING DYE HER HAIR.

I'd argue MJ's personality and back story as they related to peters growth as the ditto era gave way to JrJr era was far more important than her red hair. Hell her being a ginger isn't even important to her first appearance.

Did they?

Let's take Robbie Robertson.

If your only criteria is "black", then sure, Bill Nunn covers it! But Robbie is rather tall and thin. He's a lean character, partially due to the fact that he stays in shape based on his past on the streets. They would've been better off with someone like Andre Braugher.

Bill Nunn is... not that.

Flash Thompson is a redhead himself. Joe Manganiello was not. Neither was rather blonde Chris Zylka.

Neither of those actors looks anything alike really. And these days, most adaptations make Flash blonde, like his very first appearance in Amazing.

Is skin tone the only bar? Hair color? General build? Characterization? What's the line?

Do most people don't really have a familiarity with MJ? Most can even describe her as a character outside of being a model and the famous "Tiger" quote. Many don't even know she was the second girlfriend, after Gwen.

Yo why is this so difficult.

It's very simple. Does the character have a physical characteristic that's important to their general identity? Is that character important to the main character or overarching storyline? Do you lose that with your casting choice? If yes yes and yes then you fucked up. If you didn't cast whoever you want.

You could make Lois Lane any other race and it wouldn't matter at all.

I dunno, red hair seems to be the most important thing to most people here, which tells me that character always been shit.
Its the most important thing to people right now because it's the only details we have about her. We have no idea what her character is going to be like in the movie, so we can't very well discuss any of her character traits because we have zero idea what her performance is like. We do however, have the details of what she looks like, and she's missing what makes the character visually memorable. So that's what we are discussing.

Seriously, it's not that hard to figure out if you pay attention.

I get your point, but what other MJs have we had? Kirsten Dunst and Woodley? I don't even know if the latter dyed her hair because all her scenes were cut. So we've had a grand total of 1 actress portray her on screen. Hehe
