Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

I feel like this game just needs a few changes in order for it to at least match TitanFall (but still be slightly different as sequels tend to try new things):

The Titan timer NEEDS to be back.

Chatter should come back so that "warzone" feel of the first is in tact.

Bounty Hunt needs two banks -- one for both teams with a shield guarding each one around a set area outside of combat zones so the danger is getting to the safe zone for each team. The two banks should be on the opposite ends of the map so it discourages camping the area around the opposing team's safe zone and the zone itself should only activate/appear/open during the bank opening. I would rather the waves come throughout the entire map, but each AI was marked instead of the waves being limited. Or the drop pod locations where the AI drop is marked (either via waypoint or map marker), but there needs to be a lot more AI that spawn.

I think Titans should gain shields when friendly pilots rodeo friendly Titans, that way friendly pilots get a benefit of protection when giving battery packs.

I'm not sure what to think of the new pilot rodeo. I feel like the battery pack from an enemy Titan needs to be taken out first (and the animation happens as it is) but then when a battery is gone, a regular rodeo like with the first game happens where the Titan will be destroyed once the pilot can throw a grenade into the hatch (but first it needs to be damaged further until it's in a doomed state).

As far as the heroic Titans, I think I like the idea but I wasn't too impressed with the two Titans we have access to. They didn't fit my playstyle.

Pilot Hunter (or Pilot vs Pilot) needs to go away or be spruced up. Maybe make it Pilots with one Titan or something. Last Titan Standing is fun, but Pilot Hunter as a game mode is just not as fun or interesting.

One major improvement from the first game -- Amped Hardpoint Domination is perfection.

I think the movement is okay. It definitely seems more floaty and somewhat clunky, but it still controls well (TitanFall 1 controlled better though).

Oh, and PLEASE RESPAWN DO NOT REMOVE ATTRITION. PILOT VS PILOT DESERVED TO BE REMOVED BEFORE ATTRITION.

Bots just needed to be more distinguishable, not removed. Bots were an awesome gameplay element of TitanFall.

I hate to be that guy but let's look at this clip of R1. Arguably one of the best maps in the game, look how fluid and precise the movement is. Look at the map design, yes there are vantage points, but the buildings break up sight lines. So you can out maneuver someone who has the high ground. It's beautiful.

I haven't really had that movement in R2. While not the best player, I feel like the movement is lacking that precision and speed. And even while attempting to speed up and work on movement; I get gunned down by two guys sitting on a rooftop that can see me from my spawn.

Exactly. And that isn't even a special case for Titanfall 1. The controls were so refined, and the movement so snappy and precise, that you could legitimately pull off what is shown in that .gif, and movement much more dramatic than even that.

Running along a wall, jumping into a building, killing a few grunts, leaping out the other side onto an enemy Titan, rodeoing it and shooting at its power core, leaping to wall run away from its electric smoke, shooting it with your anti-Titan weapon, calling in your Titan. All fluid. Titanfall 2 is laboured by comparison.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet but I finally found a change I really love. Was able to unlock cloak tonight and man did it feel good to have that back. When you cloak now you stay visible for the entire length of the stim and even if you shoot (you become visible) but then go right back to cloak. It felt really good to use that again as that was my main perk in TF1.

I have a feeling that's going to be annoying to go against.

I don't get why Respawn didn't just take Titanfall 1, add single player, improve the graphics and performance and that's it.

Would have been perfect. This is still feeling a little too different to me.

One thing I did notice though is that even though you are cloaked, if you have a battery on you that is visible. I watched the kill cam and it was obvious where I was because you could see the battery on my back

This man, just add slide and grapple, maybe some more perks. Just keep the base gameplay the same

I just realized I won't be able to do shit like this anymore with the crappy new rodeo system. :(
Damn that's something that's missing!!! Even something as you taking down a Titan when Blisk says, "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" that's character! That's life! That's neat' or getting a double, and just hearing him say, "That's a double" little stuff like that adds a lot, and I'd tack that on to my post about battlefield banter bringing life!

But the Titanfall crush was awesome too ;)

I didn't play TF1 but...this beta is pretty underwhelming for me so far. I dunno if its just the maps but there doesn't seem to be the movement synergy that I saw in TF1 gameplay videos and that people seemed to go wild over. :\

Yeah, not a fan.

I'm just not a fan of twitch shooters like at all, and the melee is incredible clunky and inconsistent in this game.

Thought this would be as fun as it looks, but it's just shallow style over substance gameplay.

Well after finally getting a chance to go hands on for a few hours my early impressions are.......weird. As in that's the only way I can describe it is there are some very bizarre design decisions going on here.

Titanfall 1 was one of the fastest and most refreshing shooters I've ever played. I ended up not sticking with it as long as I'd hoped due to a lack of customization / depth and the improvements they could make for a sequel seemed incredibly obvious. Improve graphics, let me customize my mechs, more guns / abilities, single player, etc. Just Titanfall 1 but with more.

Instead I'm faced with a slower feeling, less vertical....thing. I'm not even sure what all the changes are that are making me react negatively to this other than it doesn't feel like Titanfall. Where is my Attrition? Where is the tons of AI? Where is the tight, vertical spaces? Where is my Titan timer and burn cards? Where is the war zone chatter and things that made the battlefield intense and alive?

You can still feel a competent and good games bones beneath this but this has got to be one of the most disappointing betas I've ever experienced. I try to be largely positive towards gaming but this has caught me completely off guard and taken a day 1 purchase to a possibly never or not until it's really discounted.

Titan Timer being missing makes me really upset, making it pretty much a killstreak eliminates a lot of fun casual players had, and it also made it a blast to watch various titans punch each other instead of just having 1 every couple of matches.

Played one game today of pilot v pilot and I had a 2:1 kdr. Felt good to dominate and I had some awesome momentum kills but it just didn't feel like titanfall. Thus probably isn't a purchase for me sadly

Played a few rounds and went back to titanfall 1 just to make sure my recollections weren't wrong (been a few months)

This is one of those games where at every point where they had to make a decision they chose the wrong way...titan combat seems hurt the worst...getting into a titan is a super quick thing with non of the great animation from the original game...very very dissapointed with what i thought would be my big game along with destiny for the fall

When did the TF1 beta come out relative to the actual release of the game, because nothing fundamentally changed in that time period, and despite that Tweet from the dev, I doubt they can do much to fix this disaster within 2 months or whenever the game actually has to go gold.

Perfect example of not fixing what isn't broken. Absolutely just needed a version of TF1 with more content.

I actually bought an XBOX ONE to play the original Titanfall but then I never ended up buying it due to circumstances at the time. Reading the impressions in this thread, I'm glad I didn't. I've been enjoying the beta tonight and I'm glad pre-conceptions of how the game should play haven't influenced that.

It's interesting, as early press impressions of the technical test from articles and streams have been pretty positive from what I've seen. Though, I do imagine that many of these will be swayed (negatively) by the overall public opinion in time.

Holy shit, you guys weren't kidding.

Just fired it up and this feels and plays almost nothing like the first game, which I greatly loved. The TTK is virtually gone in this. I can't even turn around to fire a round in most cases. I resign myself to the fact that I'm dead in every case except for if the enemy is already in my view at the start of them firing.

God, this is all just so terrible feeling.

And then no bots in Hardpoint? No Attrition? Why? Ugh.

Saw this a lot here, might be the most puzzling. The R-201 Carbine in this build has the same fire rate as last game's R-101, and same hits to kill a pilot at standard range. There aren't a ton of guns in this test, so what's driving people to think this?

It's the stupid amount of auto aim that gets you killed faster. You barely miss a bullet on a super fast double jump jetpack flying grapple pilot mid air. This becomes very appearent with the sniper rifles. Aim in General direction of pilot = ohko.

As far as we're aware, they seem to moving away from having bots in the majority of modes. Hard to say if that could change at all, but it's been the biggest blow to my enthusiasm towards the game. Hardpoint was my jam in the first game.
that's just wrong. Not only destroys the cinematic presentation but also alienates casuals, me included.

Just had 90 minutes with the Tech Test, and even though I'll be preaching to the choir here, as a big fan of the first one I feel compelled to share my dissatisfaction. Game feel is wrong (gunplay, movement, speed, etc), titan combat has been simplified to the maximum (no shields wat), both maps are terrible, new criterium for titanfall sucks, pilots stick out like a sore thumb with bright colors, yadda yadda.

I played tons of the first game through EA Access, and since the service just expired for me today, I may have to finally buy the first one so I don't need to maintain my subscription. Hopefully the player base will remain active, as I want to enjoy classic Attrition in R1 forever.

edit: Papercuts' video is just depressing. Respawn please, what are you doing?

I think the game will have the casual modes at launch. I think this beta is to bring in the competitive players. The players that'll play it for years instead of a couple months.

Did I miss the memo somewhere that says they removed being able to rodeo onto and shoot the enemy Titans? You just yank a power core (I guess?) out instead?

It's weird because I feel like there is still a salvageable game here. There are times when that old Titanfall feeling clicks and I'm having a good time but a moment later I'm reminded about some strange change / addition / subtraction Respawn has made.

I feel like if this game was 6 months from now they could really deliver but it only being 2 months away I'm just not sure how they could make such extensive changes.

Okay so I'm disappointed by the movement and maps a bit but this was pretty cool.

So far, I'm not a fan. Titanfall 1 was waaaaayyyy better.

Rodeo'ing is stupid now. Hard to defend against, too easy for attackers.

Batteries are an annoying mechanic to add.

Titan timer needs to come back. Sorry, but I like being guaranteed a titan after a set period of time. I dont play this game not to have a titan. I dont enjoy Titans feeling like they are a scorestreak reward.

Pilot vs Pilot needs to go away. This gametype should NOT EVER see the light of day at release. There are plenty of games that have this type of combat. Do not segregate the game's population between titan players and non-titan players.

Quick initial impressions.

PS4 version looks a good amount better. I don't like that there's no options to change aim/fire to l1/r1.

Gunplay is still good. Wall running... yeah, I'm with the rest here. I think it's downgraded. I barely use it in 2. Grapple is janky as fuck. Constantly running into shit instead of being a quick, smooth, maneuver.

Titans are ridiculously weak. There's almost no point in calling one down unless there's a titan bounty. They are terrible against pilots, for some reason.

Everyone is using the carbine and nothing else, as usual. It's just people using what's most effective.

It's just an early look beta, but I was more impressed with Titanfall's beta, and even BO3's beta.

Having never played Titanfall 1, this game felt like a COD inspired twitch shooter with robots thrown in. The movement feels strange, the grapple is slow, and the Titans feel weak. Pilots keep kicking my ass when I'm in the Titan because they keep grappling from rooftops and I have no defense until they release; Even when they do release, I can't spin around fast enough to get them.

Titans are a kill streak reward. Yuck.

I played for about two hours and don't see myself going back.

Never played titanfall, played about 4 hours of the beta and I love it.

I think I'm playing it wrong though because I don't do all the wall runs and fun combo movements, but the one map wasn't really conducive to that. I am trying to do it more, and im getting successful at it

I do get some cool moments though like wall running and then grappling into a Titan and then landing and sliding to kill a few pilots.

Enjoying my time with this a lot. Gun play is really solid, and titan combat is really fun.

One thing though is that maps seem to be too empty at times. I know they have to do that to accommodate Titans but when there's no ai grunts and no Titans it can get a bit slow.

The key is using the grapple and only jump once, then twice as you're about to finish your grapple. It keeps your momentum going and pairs well with the battery charge ability.

I'll add a positive, the game looks really good on PS4. Quite a large improvement from Titanfall 1 on Xbone

For sure a pretty game, Homestead is awful as a map but it looks great in the grassy fields.

Played a lot more tonight and while I do think there are some glaring problems (some of which can be addressed before launch and some can't) I've come around a bit more. While I think the levels on display are a bit lacking, the gameplay is still really good. That grappling hook is ace now that I'm using it more. I think the levels hurts it more than we are realizing.

Also, if you're super used to the first one go into settings and change your aiming to classic. Made a huge difference.

Agree with all of this. Thankfully, these are all things that potentially could be changed before launch.

Yeah, for sure the best looking game ever released on the Source engine. For a 60fps multiplayer game it looks damn good on PS4

I gotta say even an hour later from my initial impressions I think I'm coming around. Starting to have a lot more fun now that I'm adapting (though still some major issues)

Yep. Went and played the original just to see in case it was my imagination.

Dominated it and just felt so much better to play. Respawn dun goofed. Even the network performance was so much better.

I don't get it. They had a PERFECT foundation. They just had to build on it.

Titanfall 2 feels like a reboot of a game that didn't work. The population died because of a lack of content and customization, not because the mechanics were broken.

Really all we needed was a refined TF1 w/ more of everything we loved, not a replacement for those mechanics.

I just made a huge mistake guys

I played a round of TF1 after binging on (and starting to feel okay about) TF2.

It's like the shackles were lifted. NO MORE MOLLASES, I COULD MOVE FREELY! I COULD DODGE AND JUKE EVEN ON OPEN GROUND! MOBILITY IS REWARDED RATHER THAN PUNISHED! I DON'T BLOODY GLOW ON THE ENEMY'S SCREEN! TITANS WERE PLENTIFUL AND EFFECTIVE! RODEOING WAS A FUN GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE! I COULD FLY AROUND THE MAP WITHOUT GETTING INSTANTLY SHOT DOWN! MAPS ENCOURAGE PARKOUR! AI GRUNTS PROVIDE COVER AND FODDER FOR KEEPING THE PACE OF THE GAME FOCUSED ON ACTION!

Please don't wake me from this dream.

Also, first person animations are 1000x more badass than 3rd.
