Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

You guys think Grappling hook should be standard across all Pilots? Would everyone swinging around like Spiderman hurt or help the combat?

I'm kinda torn about that. The maps were obviously designed around it, but not sure how I feel about everyone that currently uses it getting an additional ability.

Also, It's easy enough as it is to mount a Titan. Imagine if everyone had a grappling hook.

Tried it out again and was experiencing this weird bug where my movement speed was extremely slow ever other life or so. Made the game unplayable during those lives, I assume it got introduced with this latest patch. It is a tech test, though.

I'm a fan of design that gives you choices. If grappling hook was standard, then that's one less choice you make. Do you make yourself more mobile on rocky terrain or do you make yourself more efficient in direct pilot vs pilot combat (stims for example). These questions are dumbed down or removed entirely the more you make standard.

Pilot V Pilot is like kinda like a hybrid between OG Titanfall and Advanced Warfare or something. I dig it. All the weapons are fun and mostly well balanced.

Welp, I think I'm officially checking out on Titanfall 2 going forward. The new map actually has some pretty cool interiors, reminiscent of the stuff from previous games. I always approve of skybridges to wallrun across.

But the exteriors? Fucking yeesh. It's clear now that Respawn just straight up doesn't want people actually running on walls to get anywhere significant. I'm just so done trying to make the impossible happen with these flat ass maps that have huge gaps between structures. I can work to a degree with the vast majority of the changes they've made, but there's just nothing going on here in terms of maintaining momentum on these maps.

Good luck I guess, Respawn.

Edit: And I'll echo the sentiments in here about the grappling hook. So many structures in this game feel like they lean on it too heavily. They should've approached the grappling hook as something to swing and take corners with and reel pilots in, instead of as a central mechanic to pull yourself up to roofs and the side of structures with. Definitely feels like they've made concessions to the level design for the hook to the detriment of the pilot movement.

So,

I think these are probably my final thoughts on the beta. I may play it some more over the course of the weekend, but this is where I sit:

1) The shooting mechanics are ok. the TTK is way too short and needs to be improved. The guns are actually all pretty well done though.

2) Pilot upgrades generally feel more important than those in the first game and I really like the amp giving you little bots to lay down around points you need to hold.

3) The grapple hook is too important to be a perk. The maps were clearly built with the grapple hook in mind and should be standard equipment.

4) Movement is better than last weekend. It generally feels pretty good now.

5) The Titans are far far worse than Titanfall. Too slow, not enough boost, no personal shield means once your Titan is low health it is worthless.

6) The gameplay just isn't the same. People are generally camping on spots and it feels very very different from Titanfall. Not hectic enough, not enough moving around. I've seen 3-4 squad mates sticking together to cover entries and exits to areas. Which is something you see in other FPS, but not really Titanfall. I don't know if it's the maps, the objectives, the Titans or the movement. It's probably all of the above.

7) The maps are the single biggest issue with the game. Even if they fixed every single issue above, the maps are just bad. Wide open spaces, choke points, long corridors with little cover. The game modes also encourage sitting on rooftops or poking out of windows and camping.

I don't think this is by any means a terrible no good game. I think it's an ok game. It's probably in line with a sort of bad version of BLOPS with mechs and bad map design. It's just not Titanfall, and it's not a game I really feel compelled to own or add to my collection. With CoD and Battlefield both releasing this Christmas, I want to wish Respawn good luck with this, I just don't see how this is positioned to do very well. It seems destined to run off the people who loved Titanfall, and will likely fail to attract anyone from the CoD audience since it doesn't offer much that CoD does not already have. I'm sure negative feedback all over the internet isn't helping to build hype for their game.

I like Respawn as a company, I hope Titanfall 2 does well for them, I think the way the exit from Activision happened was absolutely criminal, but I seriously doubt I'll be there day 1 unless I hear about massive changes, really good maps or a single player experience that I just have to play. But given where I'm at now, I doubt we'll see much more than mediocre to bad impressions.

Pretty much where I'm at. It's just not fun. It's ok, but the whole time I'm playing, I'm just wishing the match would finish and I want to go play something else. Nothing feels the same, folks are camping doorways the whole time, Titans feel weak and I fucking hate giving Titans ultimates. I finally get my Titan and some fucker hits me with a big ass beam and I'm done. I don't feel like I've been outplayed, it feels cheap.

Maybe it's because people aren't familiar with the game, but I see a lot of running around on foot. The maps are horrendous too. Titans in the back of the field and I have no good way to get around them to get to them. Also, bounty is pure trash, I hate it even when I'm winning. Folks just camping the banks. Im not sure what Respawn was thinking.

i love when i call a titan and i dont have all 3 fucking abilities available.

fuck this game

This also bugs me. Wtf?

Agreed. Playing Titanfall 1 made me want more diversity with Titans and being a bit more complicated and have a bit more strategy to them.

But playing Titanfall 2 has made me want to go back to the simplicity of the Titans back then. They all had the same abilities, just some had more armor and others had more boosts. I like that better than what we have now.

Liking the game a little more now that the titan meter is working correctly in Amped Hardpoint. Of the 3 modes available this is the only one that remotely interests me. I hate hate HATE bounty hunter and if that really is the Attrition replacement I'm going to be super disappointed, and I have no use for Pilot vs Pilot in a game called TITAN fall.

My main gripes at this point are the non-answer in whether or not Attrition is returning and the lack of regenerating shields on titans. If Attrition can't be made ready for launch I hope they consider adding it soon after, and if it isn't ready for launch I sure hope there is at least a straight TDM mode with titans. Besides that, I hope there is a silencer attachment in the final game. Give me the option to play stealthy. And lose the orange glow on enemies.

I don't love the maps but don't hate them either. I do agree with the general consensus that we need more maps like Liberty City from TF1.

Overall, I think there is a good game here. Probably not as good as the original, at least not without a delay and rework, but still a good game. For me at least, Attrition mode and regenerating shields are the biggest needs. Give me those and I stop regretting my pre-order.

I also still fucking detest that I don't have 3 weapons. Being forced to pick between a pistol and a Titan weapon is fucking dumb.

If you ARE going toe a stupid move like that, then give me more load outs that allow me to make a pilot v pilot set of load outs and a Titan set.

Fucking hell.

As as one of the people who likes the tech test, I think this is one of the worst and most understated changes. This benefits the game in no way and is a detriment to the blending of titan and pilot gameplay, aka the whole entire unique thing about Titanfall.

I think I have played enough. I may jump on tomorrow if I'm feeling it, but otherwise this test has told me all I need to know. It isn't as fast or fluid as Titanfall 1. It's still better than any CoD but man, disappointing. I'll only buy if footage of Attrition or better maps convinces me.

I was wrecking so hard:

Anyway, please watch this final clip: http://xboxdvr.com/gamer/Cobalt Izuna/video/20932976

I don't like Titan vs. Pilot gameplay because it's only really possible when they move predictably. And the other thing is, in the original, you had so much more to think about because you could accept that your Titan won't win a fight, and then try your best to balance the losses by exploding in another area. In this game, that doesn't exist.

1. I have no idea how much Bounty a Pilot has.
2. Some Pilots or worth LESS than a single Spectre
3. Unless you have a shield and Core, you can never win a 2v1 against Titans. It's impossible. You can't outplay people much in Titanfall 2.

Titan gameplay has been dumbed down to be more balanced between better and worse players, but Pilot gameplay is much harder. I don't understand why Pilots range from annoying to useless against Titans. They were suppose to be the David to the Goliath, not the Fire Ant to the Man.

Anyway... My final impressions of this beta is------

If you wanna know what Titanfall is about, here is something in between CoD and OG Titanfall. Personally it isn't really my thing, but oh well.

I apologise if my impressions are very negative but I loved this game so much. It wasn't like Destiny or some other game I played a bunch... OH Titanfall was a game I would play after a 10 hour shift, and still was able to finish classes. It was like playing Street Fighter without the toxic community and constant practice. I felt as if I was playing Quake II Arena in its early days.

I posted a few minor things I would like to see changed, but because they are minor, I don't expect any of them. None of them would be the difference between a sale and buy anyway.

Attrition is Titanfall. And maybe Respawn are working crunch to include it, I can only speculate. Please include it. I can play the Campaign any time really, so I will definitely wait for a discount. Regardless... I'll nip in for every beta that comes out after this, and maybe a bit of EA Access if there are any.

Final Score:
7/Titanfall

Swol, could you respond to my impressions maybe? I'd like to hear from you.

Yup, I had to bite to bullet and switch to pistol, the reload time is slow as hell to use just 1 gun

The Mastiff is the filthiest weapon ever. Tbh ever since I started using it with stim, I'm fine without the hook. Cooldowns are still huge though.

Overall I'm having fun with the game, but it just makes me mad how much better it could be without some of the new changes.

Played some PvP too, it's the most annoying mode ever. Died 4 times in a row, being shot from a window, or from behind by a dude crouching in a corner. Also had a match on Kodai which consisted of the two teams firing all their shit at each other through the middle tunnel. They played operation metro in fucking Titanfall. Jesus Christ.

Still not sure whether I'll get it Day One. Might as well just wait for opinions after launch. I never thought this is gonna happen, but currently I'm more interested in what the Campaign has to offer :/ .

I would like to see them bring back secondary weapons without having to sacrifice anti-Titan guns.

This. Please. Why would they even remove them?

Yea everyone should have a grappling hook and there should be a better way to counter rodeo.

This x 100. Let my big fucking robot swat his pesky ass if he grapples me more than once or something. The hook is cool... but damn it's fucking annoying when two pilots with grapple are going at your titan and your smoke is the slowest thing in the world and super easy to avoid.

Exactly. Titans should be able to do a quick swat or something.

And yea I feel double jump is not enough compared to the hook

What in the name of GOD?!

also, ggs

Nah, if they hook towards you in the front, you can easily swat them out the sky. I got so many kills in my last game that way. It's incredibly lenient.\

OH I KNOW! Pilot kills should be work like $50 on top of the bonus. Increase the win to 6k and then it'd be dope. (please give us 3 enemy spawns, no two.)

Im pretty sure Attrition will be in the final game, the producers said that plenty of modes are still pending to be revealed.

Im hopping for the coop mode vs AI that they implemented on Titanfall 1

Yeah, I don't see a reason.

And Titan smoke either has to be a default or on a timer without situational requirements. Titan's need a good anti-rodeo defense.

Does the titanbar progress still decay?

Nah. It also increases an insane amount when you kill bots/pull out or put in a battery. IMO there's less reason to try and damage a Titan to increase the charge than to just steal the battery from one. If you isolate an AI Titan, just keep Rodeo-ing it and you'll get a Titan in like 20 seconds.

Why wouldn't they have said it by now though? They've been taking a beating with criticism since the minute people got their hands on the beta and the rumored lack of Attrition mode has been one of the top complaints. All they had to do was say not to worry it will be in the game and that complaint goes away. So at this point I think it's a good bet that it wasn't going to be in the game and if it does make it in it will be because enough people asked for it. I'm just wondering how difficult it will be to get it in with so little time left until release. I'm guessing they are trying to figure that out as well, thus the non-answer so far.

Technically, you didn't have smoke in R1 by default either. You could sacrifice some hp with the cluster, but that's it.

The problem is, that if you can't instantly pop the smoke as the pilot is rodeoing you, you're better off saving it, as he's gonna jump off with your core anyway, then come back as soon as the smoke passes. That's why I hate this system.

In the old one, even if they removed the hatch/battery, you did not get any damage, so it was worth popping the smoke even if you were a bit late to minimize losses. Now the auto jump-off completely screws this up. Not to metion leaving hookless pilots vulnerable after each jump. I miss luring out people too.

What's surprising though, is that I don't remember getting stomped much. Which was a frequent sight in R1.

Does the titanbar progress still decay?

Both colors are there, so yeah I guess. The permanent increase is 1%/5s I guess, it's not that much. I'm hoping they can replace it with the timer by release, that was way cooler (and informative), than a progress bar.

Making it something you have to pick only gives you choice on a surface level. Sure you have more choice in the menus, but it gives you fewer choices in the actual gameplay.

Making the grappling hook a tool in your arsenal at all times regardless of the special perk you pick would allow you to tackle more situations in different ways. You could even combine tools to do things you otherwise couldn't.

So you're saying that grappling hook is so important a tool there is no real choice involved?

I beg to differ not even having played the game, knowing how powerful a tool the stim was in the first game and knowing that it was actually made stronger in the second.

I feel a bit letdown. I thought the changes would be welcome and the new map would re-invigorate the beta, but no, it's still average. I don't know what Respawn are thinking with the maps on offer currently. They utterly stink. Parkour is pointless apart from the really obvious areas which encourage it. The guns are dull (as is the overall palette). Traversal still feels completely off.

I'm out.

Is this updated tech test the one with all the supposed fixes in it?

Because its still incredibly shit compared to Titanfall 1. Like not even the full Titanfall 1, but its Beta where I remember having an incredible time with just 2 maps and downgraded visuals.

TTK is still fucking ridiculous and gamebreaking. It encourages camping in the most ridiculous ways and Titans feel shit compared to T1. I was firing rockets off and doing constant damage in T1's Titans and feeling like shit was crazy while this feels like I'm almost playing a shit moba whenever I'm in Scorch with all the cooldowns.

And the maps? Fuck me. Did they get students or interns to design the most boring boxes and open spaces possible? Even this new one is fucking atrocious. "What if deres like... a big open space and a pillar at each end? Oh and one big fuck box in the middle where all de objectives go?"

Grapple gets you to hard to reach places fast, but Stim gets you everywhere else really fast. It's great for zipping into a group guns a blazin' or dipping out just as quick. I prefer it in every class I use except for the sniper.

I swear at one point I had a Titan ready to go, then died (I was going to die, I was in bad position and it was inevitable) so I didn't drop my Titan and was going to save it to spawn into.

Then, I guess the Titan Ready retrograded itself away or something?

Or maybe my Spider bots were ready?

They need a better visual queue between your Titan being ready and your amp being ready.

Also, why does Titanfall have awesome graphics to spawn as a Pilot or spawn with your Titan (when it's ready?) and Titanfall 2 has a "Press A to Bro, Press Y to MechaBro"

It looks like so many corners were cut in the UI compared to Titanfall.

Yeah the UI is still rather bad here. Half the time I don't know a lot of what is coming up or going on compared to 1.

Also, the charge for your Titan Super is really confusing compared to your Titan's health status. It looks a lot like health and a few times I thought my health was better than it was. It's just kind of a pain in the ass UI with decisions that are less than intuitive.

I get that they are in different locations, but your Titan Super is in the same spot as your Titan is ready charge, and much larger than your other cooldown timers, so it sort of draws attention to itself in unhelpful ways.
