Clinton piles up research in preparation for debate, while Trump does what Trump does

In a live debate setting, Hillary won't be able to use bullying language like her "delete your account" tweet to Trump.

I'm a little worried about whether a dry, monotone policy wonk like Donald Trump can overcome the unhinged ravings of Hillary Clinton.

The excerpt just undermines Hillary IMO.

Obama made everything seem so effortlessly, he just knew what to say in a debate.

Hillary says something correct? Probably her staff doing research for weeks.

Jeb may have been an easy target, but Rubio and Cruz were not slouches. Especially Cruz, who's a well known master debater (hahahahah... not actually, he's really good). Annhilated him with that 9/11 riposte. So I wouldn't underestimate Trump. He's dangerous, he made it through the cesspool that is he republican primaries with multiple debates and a 10 person shit show.

This guy is good or just a very very lucky mofo, but ignore him at your peril. He's got some skill even if his ideas are wrong, or racist or not well thought out. He's a good public speaker who knows his audience, and their language level.

Nope, Obama practiced and prepared himself when he knew Clinton was a tough opponent. Looked at him flubbed when he first fought Romney because he was too relaxed.

Maybe, but keep in mind that Hillary Clinton inherited a lot of Obama's campaign infrastructure.

Obama was a political phenomenon, but even then Barack Obama the person didn't solely create Barack Obama the 2008 Democratic Presidential Nominee. He made it look effortless, but his campaign did their share of research for him. And that's okay, that's what normal campaigns do.

There are times when Clinton's staffers show themselves a little more visibly, like in her Twitter zingers, but the only reason this is a story is because Trump's not doing all the things winning campaigns normally do, such as debate prep. If he were, Clinton's own debate prep would be a non-story.

I fully intend to set my alarm to 3 a.m. to watch the debate live. It's going to be a lot more intense than the NFL game, also with possibly more concussions and fumbles.

The thing is though, the general election debates aren't only to his audience. They aren't a rally that his campaign setup where only his supporters show up. They aren't an audience there to watch only Republicans or only Democrats. He's going to have a harder time pandering and getting away with it, and I don't know if he truly, TRULY, understands that.

Because in his view, and the view of his base, there is no way he can lose.

Really? It's specifically that new yorker jab that made it seem like Ted had no idea what he was doing.

Oh yeah, Ted, go ahead and insult the entire city of new york on live TV. Surely there is no way to recover from that....

At which point Trump gave his only respectable answer. He basically just said that the people of new york are not amoral jackasses. Cue applause. I mean, what the fuck alternative was there for Cruz, to double down on generalizing one of the most significant cities in the country he wants to be president of?

It was one of the dumbest debate mistakes I've ever seen.

Obama also openly admitted, and it's generally considered, that Hillary got the better of him in the '08 primary debates.

I have a feeling a lot of people have never really sat down and watched debates with Clinton. They also seem to think good speech making (which Obama is a master of) is the same as good debating skills (they are very different beasts). Clinton is incredibly calm and collected in debates. She knows how to keep the debates steady. If you're primary exposure to the debates were the Republican primaries where Trump basically sucked everyone into his bullshit, or just stayed out of a majority of the real talk, are probably going to be in for a real surprise with how a 1-on-1 general election debate is going to go with someone who actually knows what they're doing.

What? Obama prepared meticulously for his debates. Every candidate does outside of the train wreck that is Trump. People don't go into these things blind and Obama did not make it look easy when he got tripped up by Romney in their first debate

Also have you guys watched the debates before? Trump will have to spend a long time speaking without any interruption on one specific topic. There's only so far you caneed go with no policy because Clinton will be able to respond to all of his BS and he will look like a fool if he tries to call her crooked Hilary in a debate.

Can they actually cut his mic if he just keeps yelling and interrupting? I think they're allowed to do that, right?

Would love to see him just keep going.

Is it.. is it wrong that I'd love to see this happen?

I think the idea is he does things to get the attention on him, so I do expect a bill thing thrown in there like he did with jebs mother. I think his aim is to make people uncofortalbe where he doesnt really get that way, he just doesnt care.

Yep. 60-90 seconds is actually a lot of time to fill if you're expected to give an expert opinion on an issue you have a below-rudimentary understanding of. I expect several questions where Trump repeats the same single-sentence response in slightly different wording to pad out his time.

They are allowed to do this, yes, but I'm not sure if they'll go that far. I guess it'll depend on who the moderator actually is, and how big his or her balls are.

You're probably thinking of his speeches. Short of using a Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Obama + his staff worked like crazy on his debate prep - save for Romney, and he got it the fuck together afterward. Hell, everyone does crazy prep (save apparently Trump). Research, briefing books, full-on mock debates (complete with stage and moderator) - all that shit's part of the drill.

Here's hoping she hits him with a fucking mom voice moment,

"Donald. DONALD. We are not doing this your way. This is a debate. It's time to stop interrupting me like a child and speak like presidential candidates."

Game Change 2012 talks a lot about how Obama hated debate prep, and didn't take it seriously, then got his ass kicked by Romney in the first one.

I didn't mean that he didn't prepare himself, ofc I know that.

I'm just saying that the way the quoted paragraph was written, it made Clinton seem more calculated and machine-like in winning, compared to Obama.

I wasn't that invested in politics in 08 though, so I might've thought different.

Sorry :(

He should literally be ejected from the debate if he says "Crooked Hillary." You shouldn't be allowed to use name calling in a presidential debate.

Trump has talking about how 'rigged' the debates are, and I do believe he dropped out of at least one debate in the primaries, maybe more? There's precedent.

And he still lost Iowa. I doubt he'd make that same mistake again. The primary situation in Iowa, and the current situation now are also pretty different.

Refresh my memory, who was that?
Rick Lazio in NY Senator debate back in 2000. He went into her personal space—on stage—to try and force her to sign a sheet of paper.

It sounds harsher than it actually was, but Hillary might have seemed kind of uncomfortable with him moving to her podium because she tried to put some distance between them by extending a hand for a shake instead. Hillary won that election by double digits.

Basically, there's a lot of stuff you probably can't do on stage against a woman. Just compare the difference between the Biden/Palin debate and the Biden/Ryan debate. Biden essentially bullied Ryan in their debate but he couldn't do that in the Palin debate.

If she breaks out a "mom voice" to address him breaking rules I might actually die.

I mean, he's right about sounding phony.
Alright, I'll bite. Do you try to wing your exams? Because this is literally what this is. It's an oral quiz, albeit the consequences of losing are higher than anything. It behooves you to study for your test and answer the questions rather than bullshit your way out. These are important questions about how economy works and our foreign policy.

I actually think the calm, pleasant tact might be her best option. Its the same with any bully: acting like you not only aren't bothered by what they're saying, but that you also understand their point of view and agree with them in part can totally undermine them.

Replying with "Yes Donald, I understand your legitimate concerns over my health, but I assure you I am doing well. Now the gentleman has asked you to explain your 'tunnel technology' and I'm sure many of your supporters would appreciate knowing how exactly this will work."

The 1 on 1 format with the extended time per question doesn't suit Trump as much as the 5 or 6 man you have a 1 minute to answer. The zinger approach works when everyones answer is short, when you've got 2 minutes to fill with your answer you actually have to show a bit of knowledge.

Hillary just has to channel herself during the Benghazi hearings whenever she responds to Trump to come off well in the debates.

I want to know what the odds are for any sort of gendered insult, connotation, joke, etc. If he goes there, the race is beyond over - the gender gap cements itself into place.

I really don't know if he can help himself.

I give it until the second debate before he breaks down.

Debating with Trump is like debating with a circus clown. All he has to do is honk his horn and make silly faces, and the audience will laugh and applaud.

There won't be applause the way there was during the primary debates. Just silence between statements. If Trump tries to carry his same act over from the primary debates he's just going to look awkward on stage.

"The audience was stuffed with liberals! It was rigged!"

She is going to eat him alive on screen. it will be like watching those national geographic vids of a cheetah just chewing away at a live hippo. he's going to be sweating balls on screen. no way he lasts all three debates. i wouldnt be surprised if he gets up and leaves after the first hour.

I just hope he doesn't get under her skin and she ends up lowering to his level. Only thing I'm afraid of.
