This guy poked around the internal files of the game and seems to prove the contrary. He's not currently working on a translation patch though.

What was "hardcoded" seems to be the onomatopoeias, which are obviously graphic files.

Really? I never thought about the pointer functionality as more than as nice gimmick.

The game is certainly playable without it.

Also it's not weird but for massive games to only be announced for 3Ds a few months before hand. MH3U was announced in September and out in December for instance.
