Steven Universe S04E06 - Last One Out of Beach City
US Airdate: September 8th, 2016 at 7PM
Synopsis:
Pearl, Steven and Amethyst go to a rock show.

Future Boy Zoltron:

That was cute. I was half expecting Steven would have some weird future vision of something awful happening right at the end but it was just a fun story, some background on Mr Smiley (town episodes are always "filler" if you don't care about them but I always find them charming. Not many shows take the time to show how the extraordinary interacts with the ordinary and I've always appreciated that about Steven Universe.

I definitely think that they laid it on a bit thick with Mr Smiley and Mr Frowny's "routine". Maybe it's because the show is a beacon for the LGBT community but it felt tacked on with the hinting and such. The extra pauses just felt a bit unnecessary. But I really loved the idea that sometimes with depressed people there really isn't anything you can do or say to help them (except the episode kinda reneged on that but... either way the message was there)

I was hoping they'd play around with future vision a bit more but I liked what we got. Not a groundbreaking episode but cute and meaningful.

Well, it looks like
they pulled a Hit the Diamond on us. Nothing extremely major despite an ominous title. The synopsis will probably be fairly accurate as well since there was some musician who mentioned playing a role on the show and he even had a screenshot of his character.

Must... resist... leak...

Yo! Welcome back. :)

Back at it again, LET'S GET IT

Future Boy Zoltron spoilers:
I'm glad we're at a point in the series where Garnet trusts Steven enough to casually give him future vision and it actually helps kick start the resolution to the plot, rather than being some run-of-the-mill "Steven gets a new thing, messes up the town with it and has to figure out how to fix it while also losing the thing to maintain status quo"-type episode a lot of shows would start degrading back into.

Also, it definitely seems like Mr. Smiley and Mr. Frowny had something going on. I think after Steven's triple-streak of "failures" in Bismuth, Jasper and Eyeball he needed to help someone get some closure.

If you look up the definition of filler in the dictionary, there is a picture of this episode's title card.

That said, the onion joke killed me.

what says you GAF? Were they or were they not a couple?

Feels like a wasted concept. Steven should have gotten the future vision in the beginning of the episode and spent the rest of it looking into everyone's future.

Future Boy Zoltron discussion:

The way Mr Frowney spoke, he looked like an old Sierra game character. Sudden silence with only a moving mouth and all.

Inoffensive, that's really the only way I can describe this episode. If anything it gave Lars and Sadie more character development.

I like how cartoony people look in Raven & Paul's episodes tbh

This episode would have been better if Sinbad were around to lean on the 4th wall

I liked the relationship between Mr. Smiley and Mr. Frowney, and I respect the crewniverse's mission to develop the townies that are part of Steven's beloved home- it only makes sense to show us what he's fighting for, right?- but this ultimately mundane and inconsequential human stuff is exactly why I love the Steven bombs...
We get to chop off the extraneous (human/townie) fat and get to the juicy (crystal gem, Steven + Connie, homeworld gems, corrupted gems, etc.) stuff right away.

I'm really starting to dislike waiting seven days just to get to an episode that has no real effect on the much more compelling, mysterious, nuanced, and detailed gem plots.

Honestly these simplistic self contained human-centric stories are starting to feel kind of out of place now that the show is in it's fourth season; specifically the ones that involve very mundane conflicts like "Lars and Sadie still aren't getting along" or "The restaurant dads are competing with each other!".
And keep in mind, this coming straight from a person who's loved this show since 2013; when the townie-centric stuff was all there was!

:P

...

...this one was kind of meh for me.

I'm still so proud and excited about this that I just have to share it with GAF...

Attack the Light (the SU game developed by my studio) had a little cameo/reference in tonight's episode:

(the awesome OKKO also got a shout out in that same bg!)

We had no idea this was going to be a thing until we spotted it in an early screening of the ep a few weeks back. Needless to say, there was much celebrating by our team.

It may seem like a little thing, but definitely a big deal and an honor for us :)

I thought the episode was sweet. Yeah, it's another town centric episode devoid of any impact on the main narrative but its nice seeing character development for the Beach City folks and Mr. Smiley hasn't even had any before this episode. The comedy routine at the end made me happy.

That's great! Congratz!

These in between so called "filler" episodes only feel as such because you're watching 11 minutes of Steven Universe after an entire week.

It actually reminds me of reading a single chapter from any average comic out of a weekly Shounen Jump. Not much happens in that single chapter usually.

BUT , put 6-7 chapters together and you get a completed volume and when read that way , the slower parts help make the action-y bits that much better.

Now that we've got 109 episodes of SU to pour over , the slower/filler-y ones end up feeling like a nice break , giving the cast a chance to breathe.

Steven is a product of 2 worlds and his show should represent both - Gem conflict and action as well as humor and wackiness with the ordinary townsfolk. It's also worth mentioning that it IS a show for kids and some episodes feel a little more youth targeted than others.

All that said , I found zoltron to be an alright episode. I can admit to hoping for more because of the title being a reference to one of my favorite Miyazaki shows (Conan , Boy of the future/Future boy conan) but having it instead reference BIG with Tom Hanks is also kind of fun.

Boring episode. And really, it kind of helped me realize why these town-centric episodes have been such a slog; they haven't really evolved since the first season. They all basically boil down to Steven getting into some random hijinks with a town person/people and using his powers or gem stuff to help in some way.

We have two gems who have had virtually no experience with human civilization, it'd be great if these episodes could incorporate them in some ways. Heck, it'd be great if the crystal gems spent more time with the towns people.

another problem is that the town people are so static

the gems get some development but even sadie and lars are largely the same people as when we started, except sadie has a scar

That's one of my major gripes with this otherwise absolutely wonderful cartoon.
I believe that the human-centric episodes would be twenty times more interesting and relevant if everything wasn't from Steven's point of view.
We never really get see interesting concepts like Peridot programming crazy new games based off very simplified homeworld history/culture for Mr.Smiley because she's personally interested/invested in improving his primitive human arcade or Pearl revisiting old gem sites only to find and eventually befriend some quirky yet physically inept human explorer that reminds her of her past self.

Steven either has to awkwardly insert himself into the conflicts of the townies/humans (like he does in every Lars and Sadie episode) or do something kind of dumb with gem technology to get our favorite rock ladies involved (like in "Frybo" or "Onion Trade").
When it comes to the former it almost feels like a completely different show, and when it comes to the latter it can become a bit contrived.

Also I don't think it helps that a general rule of the show is that humans and gems steer clear of each other, and humans in particular (barring Connie) seem to view gem stuff in an unbelievably mundane light.
Human episodes can be cute and fun, some can even bring the action and feels, but these narrative rules that have been pointed out are starting to make many of them feel like complete filler.

You know, there is one thing about the back ground lore the never occurred to me until now. Why in the hell were the diamonds producing so many Soldiers in the first place? They seem to be mass producing Ruby and Quarts soldiers before the rebellion on earth even started.

The only reasons you need huge army is because your fighting a war somewhere.

The rebellion apparently lasted one thousand years. Rose probably didn't even start it. Maybe she was just thrown in there and that's where she got her love for life on earth .

Also, I just noticed that maybe Rose could probably bounce attacks back and that's how she shattered pink diamond... ¿future Steven power?

Like I said, it seems like the Diamonds where mass producing Gem solders even before Rose's rebellion. Makes me wonder if maybe the Diamonds were fighting each other before they united to stop the rebellion.

Homeworld is a conquering species. They take over other worlx for their resources. They were most likely fighting other organic life before the Rebellion happened.

See I don't hate the townie/non-lore episodes. It makes it so when something actually does happen to the city I actually care more about what happens to people. And then there are things like Lars and Sadie that are always fun to watch.

I swear I remember Rebecca Sugar saying in an interview somewhere that those smaller, non-lore episodes where Steven is a kid was the heart of the show.

I've been thinking about that, and I guess we don't know since it would make sense to not bind into anything yet as it would be a way to expand the shows lifetime after YD big bad is done for.

I like to imagine there is a race of sentient metals that is fighting the gem empire in some far part of the universe.
