The Lightning Dock - Apple's answer to charge and use headphones

Typical anti-Apple photo that looks damning at first, but is in reality inetellectually dishonest and shows products that are being used in rare scenarios.

1. The vast majority of people who listen to music on their iPhone 7 will be using the included headphones with no adapter. This is a temporary solution and has nothing to do with "design"

2. The mouse lasts at least 3 months on a charge, and takes like 1/2hr to charge fully. So, a couple times a year, you'l throw the mouse on its back and plug in the cable before bed. Wow, the absolute horror. Small price to pay for what is the most ideal place for the port, on both an engineering and aesthetic level. Not like the mouse is used, or displayed this way, even a tiny fraction of the time.

3. I own a Macbook, use it heavily and never in a fucking million years would I need to do that. I've also witnessed this laptop being used hundreds of times, in a shitload of places, and not once have I seen such an adapter plugged in. Yes, there MIGHT be a scenario where this is required, and it IS possible to do, so lets make an image out of it and pretend that this is how the product is expected to be used, or is actually used. For sticking in that many things, you would need a hub on MOST laptops on the market today, even port-heavy ones.

4. Uh, you can also charge the pen by sticking it to a lightning cable. This is a secondary charging method, if you need a quick charge, and is in no way required to use. It is, however, convenient, and logical, and the pen could be charged this way. Doesn't mean you should stick the pencil in and leave it lying around like that in random places. But yeah, Apple should have made this charging method impossible, so that they can't be shit on with such memes.

5. Every battery pack has a bulge- some take up the entire dimensions of the device, some are at the bottom, some are at the top. Apple's solution tends to be in the middle, and I guess this is subjective, but I don't see it as looking worse than any other battery pack. And functionally, it's better than anything else out there.

So, five photos which are meant to provide some kind of theme, but which in reality are intellectually dishonest, misleading, and trollish. One can make the exact same set of photos for any other tech product. But, a perfect photo for a narrow-minded whine and troll fest like this thread.

I could tell from the title this would be an ignorant, troll-infested Apple shit-fest, and boy, I wasn't wrong.

Yes, Apple removed the headphone jack, as has been rumored and basically known for MONTHS. I love how people are still trying so hard to work themselves into a rage about it, even thought they've had so much fucking time to get used to the idea. Don't like it? Deal-breaker? Don't buy the damn phone. Meanwhile, this is no different than all the other transitions that Apple has pushed in the past and which in retrospect were absolutely the right course of action to take, and which enabled better, sleeker, and more reliable and robust products. Is using an adapter 100% ideal? No, but you can never have a perfect transition. Does that mean you should NEVER make changes? That's what I get from this thread. The hatred and viciousness towards Apple is really pathetic.

Phil offered what could be a useful solution to those wanting to charge the phone while using the 3.5mm jack. Apple hasn't gone on a fucking marketing campaign advertising the dock for this purpose. It was a sincere email to a questioner, and it could have very well solved their problem. Apple is not pushing anyone to buy anything. The adapter is included in the fucking box. The dock has been around a long time. Nobody is putting a gun to your heads and forcing you to smash you current iPhones and run out to buy the 7. The 6S is still a beast, and an excellent phone. And for those of you who DO get the 7, all your headphones will ALSO work on it, right out of the box. It's a product positioned for the future, just like Apple has done countless of times in the past. And each time, we hear the same angry whining from the same kinds of entitled people who are unwilling to look 2 feet beyond their own noses. In a year almost all headphones will have lightning versions and this will be a complete non-issue.

But feel free to spend your energy in the meantime pretending that Apple has taken infringed on your human rights, just like every other fucking time Apple has made a change for the better, and were followed by the rest of the industry in short order. Whether it's optical drives, or Flash, or removal batteries, it's the same predictable, short-sighted shit each time. And, given time, Apple has been proven right in pretty much every single instance. Not that anyone here would actually admit that, as obvious as it is.

Is this an old meme or am I witnessing a birth?

You never actually commented on the point of the image: from a design standpoint, these are terrible. Saying things like "oh but you're not gonna do these things all that often" doesn't at all address the fact that these are terrible from a design standpoint.

Going back to proprietary headphone connectors is like going back in time. The phone I had before the OG iPhone had one and it was just stupid. The OG iPhone too had a weird jack that didn't fit all 3.5mm connectors.

I really hope Apple is the only manufacturer that does this. Who is going to buy different headphones for every device?

Design is about function as much as it is form. You can argue where these all skew on that scale, but it's ALL about design.

Lol, nobody is licensing Lightning. Only Apple has it. If anything, Apple will need to move over to USBC.

And most of those transitions "Apple pushed" were because 1) they were on an upgrade or die cycle anyway and 2) they pushed the transition after the format was already dead. The floppy drive thing is revisionist history, even MSDOS and Windows games were shipping standard on CD for years when they dropped the drive.

Aside from courage, what exactly is their supposed rationale for getting rid of the headphone jack? is it supposed to improve the phone in some other way?

They gave a bunch of reasons, including space, and age of the port, but ultimately just said it's because they wanted to.

I don't think the reasons are at all that convincing, but I'm not being a complainer about it. It's done, and I don't think it's one of those situations where apple will back pedal on.

Makes it thinner so that it can bend easier. Moldable Smart Technology by Apple. Fully patented.

Design is about function as much as it is form. You can argue where these all skew on that scale, but it's ALL about design.

It's antithetical to Apple's MO considering they've always been about form. That's actually what put them on the map in the first place. Ugly, inelegant solutions don't stop being ugly, inelegant solutions just because they're not used very frequently.

Uh, Bluetooth?

Yes because everybody will just buy more shit they don't need either way. Most people don't have bluetooth headphones.

That's the point, shouldn't need to buy new shit because the old shit still works and is still peak functionality.

This is an arbitrary change to beat more money out of shills.

What the hell does sticking a hub of cables into a product have to do with the DESIGN of the actual product in question? You can stick that hub into ANY laptop, or desktop, and it would look like shit. So, what's the point of that photo? That makes the design of the Macbook "terrible"? Maybe, just MAYBE, if you need to stick 10 cables and an SD card into your laptop, then that Macbook isn't for you? They also sell something called the Macbook Air, and Macbook Pro, that have more ports (of course, still not enough ports for that ridiculous photo). This photos says nothing about any "terrible" design of that Macbook, only about the intent of the photo.

No, they just happen to have a solution for lunatics that inexplicably want to charge their phone and also listen to audio at the same time.

It's an easy solution to make sure that people don't try to use the Pencil or Magic Mouse while charging, because you really would never need to. Both can be charged to a useable state in literal minutes (if not seconds in the case of the Pencil specifically).

I'm sorry, but the only lunatics here are the ones who buy into all the shit Apple does....

You're getting way too worked up that people are being critical of a product from a company you neither work for nor will likely ever work for.

The design of the hub is terrible because it has all the ports sticking out every which way. Obviously nobody is complaining that a hub is letting you plug in several things at the same time. That's the point of hubs in general. The complaint about this specific hub is about this specific layout of ports.

You would see that if you weren't so blindingly raging about complaints you don't like.

Typically, apple argue form is function as well. But it's all obsfucation. Throughout all their years, their products have landed all over on that scale. The big name ones have fallen on both great form and function, but they have always had some hanky side things.

I think the above examples fall totally in line with Apple's general MO. The mouse is the closest one to being weird, but again, I believe it to be about not using it as a "wired" mouse while it's plugged in.

Steve jobs is rolling in his grave

Yep, cause Steve never got rid of any ports. Never. Nope.

PS- I find this line utterly disgusting, and disrespectful. Stop fucking pretend you have a clue of what SJ would or wouldn't want. trust me, the people who have worked with him for decades have a much better clue than you do.

I've asked like 6 people in this thread what "new shit" people will need to buy with the iPhone 7, and never got an answer. But hey, feels cool to say, right? "Sheep", and "shills" and all. Cause clearly, anyone who buys this next iPhone is one of those things, nobody could possibly decide to buy it on any other merit. You forgot the words "money-grab" in your post, that would have made it even cooler.

I'd need to buy new headphones and replace my $150 ones.

There.

Easy.

Gonna stop getting mad that people don't like the thing you like now?

Is this an old meme or am I witnessing a birth?

I hadn't thought of this. I never use any of those old templated GAF memes, but I might have to save this one for future use.

It says a great deal about form over function. Great design has both.

Ok, so the new Macbook should have had 10+ ports to be considered "great design"? Cause that's the only magical solution I'm seeing as a solution to that photo, which no doubt was assembled for the sake of the photo.

Why the fuck would you NEED to buy new headphones and replace your current ones? What part of "free 3.5mm adapter included" do you not understand? This isn't about liking or not liking. This is about honesty and specificity.

Guys, I love Brand and if you insult it I'll be very upset so please, for my sake do not say bad things about Brand. If you don't like it, don't buy it, but don't tell anyone because I'll hear about it and be sad. Thank you for your time.

Uh, that hub isn't fucking made by Apple. Blindingly raging? No, I just like accuracy and honesty. So now we know you've been shitting on the Macbook because you don't like the design of a 3rd party hub that has nothing to do with Apple, because you're too ignorant to get the facts. Got it.

There's always a design reason why something ugly and inelegant ends up being that way. I'm a Surface Pro user, I'm pretty well versed in shitty design decisions that, according to their designers, totally have a legit reason to be that way. You can follow the trajectory of the designers struggling to figure out what the fuck to do with the stylus to the device, for instance. For two years it's attached to the same port as the charger. The next model you attached it via a little flap attached to the keyboard. This year they're attached via a magnetic strip on the side. All kinda "eh", kinda functional, not at all optimal solutions. All perfectly "valid" reasons if you explain them away.

Bad design is bad design, even if there's a reason why it's designed that way. In fact, it's not "if", there's ALWAYS a good reason why bad designs turn out that way. Hardware designers aren't complete idiots no matter what company the designs come out of. I'm critical of Apple's poor design choices just as much as Microsoft's and just as much as Samsung's. It's more concerning coming from Apple considering simple, elegant and form + function designs have been their thing for such a long time.

First off no, this is about being angry that people don't like something Apple did.

Secondly, you need to plug the adapter into the lightning port, I use my headphones while charging my phone, this is not a rare occurrence so it's something I would no longer be able to do. It would require me to buy a splitter or something or another proprietary peripheral and that's stupid.

Is that easy enough to understand without getting angry that people don't like the thing?

Funny you didn't mention it wasn't made by Apple when you were defending it a post ago. I'm willing to bet you didn't actually know that until someone in this thread pointed that out.

It is real. And the excuses are "but but that's the catch! it's wirelees so it should be used only without a cable!!!!!!!!!!"

I've actually used one before - those lightning cables are thick and do not have the same flexibility as would be suitable for mouse usage. They fray too with excessive wear.

The other solution to make it so it can be used wired would be to NOT sue the lightning port, or only a special lightning cable. I dunno. It just seems the lightning cable is not meant to be used that way, so they prevented it.

It's not about hiding the port so the mouse looks good, because the trackpads and keyboards do no such thing.

Apples wiring and chords have always been really cheap and easy to fray I've found. I can see them discouraging using them in ways that cause bend and stress because of that. But it's still not a really good design reason, IMO. It's just justification to keep using the thinner cheaper material which also breaks faster which increases turnover rate.

It's solid business strategy.

So you have your headphones plugged in, and charge your phone simultaneously, 24 hrs a day? You can't, oh I don't know, find a tiny window in the day to charge your phone without headphones in your ears? The iPhone 7 should have great battery life, it shouldn't need to be stuck in a charger most of the day. If you start the morning with it charged, in extreme situations you should need at most to stick charge it for 1/2 hr tops at any other point during the day, if at all.

So sorry, I don't buy your predicament. These use-cases and scenarios seem absurd and ridiculous, cobbled together only to bash Apple, and not something that normal human beings would have an issue with. It's not about liking or not liking. It's about seeing if there's any real merit to the fake outrage people are displaying, and their fake reasons for the outrage. In all probability this change will have a near zero effect on your life.

I dont get it either man, and its not like people are walking in here and just shitting all over Apple as a company. I might buy it myself despite dumb decision to remove the headphone jack. Finally having stereo speakers and ram are tempting, along with 90% of people I know using imessage/facetime

that dude is heavily stanning though

I charge and use my headphones too. But I'm not angry about it.

Maybe because i'm not 100% in the market for a 7 ( i do want it though), but I will likely get an iPhone in future at some point, and most likely it won't have a headphone port. I have to move on.

Am i forced to? yeah, i guess so.

So am I part of the problem, letting companies give me the shaft and just taking it? Guess it depends on your perspective. I usually just see it as I'm not big on complaining about things.

Yeah this is going nowhere and I'm sorry people are being so mean in a thread on an internet forum to a company that makes billions upon billions of dollars. Truly I weep for the poor souls at Apple that I'm critical of a design change because it negatively impacts me if I were to buy one.

The headphone thing is actually a sort of concern from, because my biggest use case is to watch streaming video at night with headphones.

But I'm sure I'll figure some work around. I DO understand the outrage, but I'm just not one to be outraged by stuff like this anymore. Just deal with it, either by working out a solution within the confines of the ecosystem, or get out of it.

If you don't know yourself, what you want exactly conclude with your post, what exactly does this say about you telling me to reread your post? That you only want discussions, about how justified products are, based on your own factors, which includes you seeing negative comments on the internet?

But I'm sure I'll figure some work around. I DO understand the outrage, but I'm just not one to be outraged by stuff like this anymore. Just deal with it, either by working out a solution within the confines of the ecosystem, or get out of it.

I mean I'm not even outraged. I legitimately don't care. It's just a design flaw to me, as a user, because it would negatively impact me.

But I really need to stress, that I really don't care, because I'm not buying an Iphone anyway because my LG is still working and I really don't like replacing phones anyway.
