Forza Horizon 3 (PC/XB1, 2016) Confirmed; Set in Australia

is the gtx 950 decent enough to play this? i currently have a 650 ti boost so i know i need to upgrade.

it'd be ok right? only have 8gb of ram atm but i can upgrade that at christmas or something but just making sure i'd be able to play in the meantime

That's below the recommended specs so I'm not sure. Look up Forza Apex benchmarks/gameplay with that card on youtube, it might give you some idea how FH3 will perform though I suspect FH3 will be harder to run than Apex since it's open world.

Yeah download F6 Apex to get an idea of performance on your setup. It should be similar.

I could max 4K/60fps it with a 980Ti, I hope it's the same for Horizon 3!

Terrible advice, not only it is an open world like you said, but it is a 30FPS game on the Xbox One vs 60FPS of Forza Motorsport. You can't compare like that.

I already expect a lot of posts saying how FH3 is unoptimized because Forza Apex runs better.

I doubt it will work out that way. Motorsport is a 1080P 60fps title on XB1, and Horizon is 1080P 30fps. Performance probably won't scale perfectly between the two platforms, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's a decent indicator. Graphically Horizon 3 is a lot more ambitious than FM6.

I also have a 950. I can play Forza Apex in dyanmic/med/high 1080 at almost constant 60FPS. Obviously Horizon 3 is going to have ALOT more going on graphically.

But we were talking about PC hardware performance with Forza 6: Apex, not FM6 on the Xbox.

And yes, Horizon 3 is probably a bit more taxing due to the open world and more roadside assets. But racing games are usually the best genre for high performance. Ultimately it's still Turn10's (modified) engine.

I try everything. :( (still 6 hours)

I still don't think it's realistic to expect Apex like performance from a game doing quite a lot more on the graphics side.

Expect Horizon to be a little more taxing as it's open world but 980 ti is a beast so i'm sure you're be fine whatever happens

I'm in the research phase of building my first PC from scratch - would it be reasonable to assume a 1070, 16 gigs of Ram & an i5 can run this at 4k/60 fps? If not, what parts would I need to look to improve?

How do you guys think this will run on my rig

FX6300 overclocked at 4ghz
Sapphire Rx 470 nitro+ 4gb
16gb ram

I get anywhere between 70 and 110 fps on Apex maxed out at 1080p

Praying for a pc demo as I dont have an xbox and its quite expensive for a pc game (price will not drop for a while as its windows store only) and looks so good

I'd say definitely yes if you said a 1080. 1070 is a very good card but not sure how much juice Horizon is going to need just yet. Hopefully we get a demo on PC so people can share their performance.

GPU is ok buddy.Usually the fx 6300 is the only thing keeping you from max performance but since its highly overclocked i dont think it will be too much of an issue. And generally its not an issue but since its open world u might expirience some drops but your general perforamce will be really good i think.50-70 Fps with some drops maxed out propably

Can you preload on PC?

Yes. There's a 60 GB download available.

edit: nevermind. I tried download it (i'd been holding off because SSD space) and it's just the small placeholder file like they do on xbox after a preorder. It still demands 60 GB before you download it for some reason.

I really don't see how it's terrible advice, it's all we have to go on right now. It's better than nothing. And yeah the dynamic weather and time of day combined with the open world will for sure make it more taxing than Apex, though with all the stuttering and overall performance issue with Apex for a lot of people (myself included) we have to hope it's a better port than Apex. If it's not then FH3 being more demanding will be the least of their problems. The Apex complaints aren't very loud because it's a free game. Paying for a game and then having it run like ass is a different story.

I think Apex stutters when new textures are loaded mid-race from RAM (or even HDD/SSD) into v-ram and that's because the lighting comes pre-calculated as a huge amount of data. On the consoles it's all put into the same memory, on PC, if you don't have over 6gigs of v-ram, that's not possible. Horizon 3 on the other hand has dynamic lighting,so I expect it to be less RAM hungry, but quite a bit more GPU taxing.

I can play for an hour or two with the same track/car combo and have zero stuttering and then all of a sudden I'll start getting stuttering without changing the cars or track.

We're talking huge drops too, from 100-150 FPS into the 50s. It's pretty dramatic.

I don't have 12 GB of RAM, for me it's paging-stutter in Apex (visible on the Windows resource-monitor). Aside from those huge paging drops to from 1TB SSD to RAM to v-RAM, I thought it would run ok, but of course I can't possibly know how it would run if it weren't paging. An hour ago I ordered new CPU-MoBo-RAM for the first time in many years, I'll get back to you, if it runs smooth then with the same graphic card that won't be upgraded.

Just did a quick check now and it seems like I'm just getting extremely low CPU and GPU usage. Bad port imo.

EDIT:

Decided to go with the Singapore store method of Gift Card + rest w/ paypal.

Download gives some kind of error though :F

Same for me. I guess I really can't install anything from the Store to my SSD for who knows why. I'll probably try a full clean re-install of Windows 10 because by now it's clear this still isn't the OS that can keep working at 100% for years.
I've been searching high and low for a solution to download errors with FH3 since mine flat out refused to download more than a few kb before getting an error - it turns out I had "HitmanPro.Alert" installed and that was conflicting with the store somehow - uninstalled it and the download worked first time.

If you have that, try uninstalling it - if not, it might be related to security software on your PC.

I would maybe just wait for it to be available to pre-load.

Do those who purchase the physical Ultimate Editon still get early access? If so, does it come by way of a preorder code or does it just release earlier?

yeah, at the same time, graphics cards drop in price so quickly, i can't see paying more than $160 unless i could get a huge bump up for like fifty bucks or something, i'm not paying $300-400 to get a smoother framerate. plus the 950 offers SLI, right? so a year down the line i could throw down $100 on a second one theoretically and get a huge boost ?

I couldn't download Forza 6 Apex off the Store either so I concluded that my Windows anti-spying measures had crippled the functionality so I ended up reinstalling Win10.

Doesn't really work like that with SLI tbh. The game has to have properly coded SLI support but you will still suffer from Microstuttering even if it does.

Slightly offtopic but I'm just in the middle of this process. I first wanted to finally give Windows 10 Reset function a chance because it should be able to make a new clean re-install without too much hassle. "Could not find the recovery environment." Thanks, why didn't you create one?!

Ok, how about the Media Creation Tool. Well, that #(¤/"/#¤ can't find my USB drive regardless of what USB port I try. I found out specific USB sticks are not compatible with this Tool but mine isn't from that manufacturer so it should have worked just fine. It shows up in Windows just fine etc.

Well, at least there are alternatives instead of trying to use Microsoft's own software to install their own operating system.

That's probably advisable, it's what I was going to do myself, but I was able to confirm there was definitely an issue - before I could only download ~140kb before getting an error, now I downloaded ~4mb, but the Store says "installed" and has a Play button on the game page, rather than "Error, couldn't install" and asking me to retry the install. Whatever the issue was, this fixed it for me.
