Final Fantasy XV TGS 2016 Trailer

off-screen PS4 Pro version screen

impression from gamewatch

-when they first saw the screen, they thought "wow it's very clean!"
-they were disappointed in FFXV's visual recently especially the gamescom demo, but Pro version was "this was what I was expecting from FFXV visuals"
-the vividness and texture quality looked superb, with very stable framerate.
-The green field area especially looks completely different from before

So much hype due to this post :D

So my game will still look like that just less sharper so to speak if I get the pro without the tv?.

*edit* wrong thread

Yeah, checkerboard rendering will significantly improve the quality of the visual image beyond ps4, regardless of if you have 4K or 1080tv

Remember when back in the day we used to diss FFXIII and FFXIV 1.0 for focusing so much on being graphical showcase that they end up underperforming in all other departments? Now people are doing the opposite. XV on normal PS4? Looks meh, hype is low. XV on PS4 Pro? Wow looks amazing, hype is at maximum!!

It's a vicious cycle.

I hope this isn't the start of a new trend, instead of devs optimizing the game to work well on the base PS4 they'll just throw their hands up and say 'Buy a Pro for the best experience' and the 40 million existing PS4 owners will be left to rot.

I think Square Enix has tried pretty damn hard over the years to get the game running well on base PS4, but it seems like they've just about hit their limit (mostly due to the Luminous Studio engine I presume).

2014 we're coming for you.

This gif feels so nostalgic. it's pretty much teh first time we saw noctis runnig and exploring iirc.

I'm just curious how these choices will affect reviews. I'm sure they will. This will decide what companies do moving forward.

Hard to say. FFXV is one of the more recent games that seems to struggle on the current PS4 while stuff like Horizon, KH 0.2 looks amazing on it.

Same why they review PC games? :P
It won't be like that I think. There's a slight resentment from games media to the implications of splitting up the console base that's different from PC. We'll see when it comes I guess.

I expect it to be a bit weird at the beginning since it's new.

Most reviewers will all play it on Pros and talk about how great it looks and people like Angry Joe will play it on vanilla ps4s and yell about how terrible it looks. Kotaku will write a fluff piece comparing the current console disparity to Marxism. Gaf will be mad.

How are they splitting up the console base when it's the same game? It's no different than games with a PC version looking a lot better.

Lets be honest, we hardly ever see disparity between console versions affecting review scores much. So why would that suddenly change just because there's a PS4 upgrade? When the Xbox version runs worse than the PS version or vice versa, you hear about it from Digital Foundry and people bitch about it on GAF, but beyond that there's pretty much zero impact.

The game runs well on base PS4 in the latest build at TGS. Where are you getting the idea they aren't optimizing it to work well on base consoles?

KH looks okay, it's not that technically a demanding game as something like XV.

I'm just paraphrasing what I've heard from a few podcasts. We know it's actually not splitting them up.

But JZ had it right I think. The Angry Joes of the world would get upset at stuff like this.

Like, say FFXV falls to 20 fps against the final boss or Titan on PS4 in a scenario where Square focused on getting stuff like this fixed on the Pro version instead. And the Pro version is amazing and runs like a dream. Will people be reviewing the Pro or PS4 in this case? Will they take both systems into account? What's the actual version that's going to be reviewed?

The disparity between Pro and PS4 is larger than XBOX and PS4 where these differences may actually affect scores more than what we have now. There's no set standard to how stuff like this will be reviewed yet either.

It's cute that you think reviews actually care about framerates.

Forget frame rate then and consider the visuals. Imagine if the Pro version came anywhere near the PGW 2014 fidelity. The disparity between Pro and the PS4 is nothing like XBOX and PS4. This will make a difference when they're being reviewed under the same umbrella.

They will probably just mention which version they're playing and still review the game as it is. Most reviewers don't play multiple versions of the same game.

Not to mention it's not open world.

But yeah, Horizon is a technical marvel, that I won't debate.

Yeah Horizon looks insane, and even that got delayed for more polish. Being a Sony first party dev who can focus on only one console has benefits too.

I think you're just making up examples to try and imagine this scenario which you are fixated on. I don't want to "imagine" scenarios because I don't think this will be an issue anyone really cares that much about especially with regards to review scores. You'll hear people talking about it on podcasts, on blog sites, and youtube stuff. But that's about it. Is it really that hard to accept that it's just not going to be a big deal?

Are you fucking kidding me. After waiting as long as we did for the game there's another paywall to get the version that Square Enix has obviously been wanting to target?

It's no secret that the visuals have been leaving people wanting. Especially on the IQ front, the Luminous engine has not been kind to the consoles that we've ended up getting. I'm really hating this sentiment that "now THIS is what FFXV really is!" after all this time, for a marginally better console that costs another $400.

Nah. I'm not gonna play this game with Sony. I'm just gonna wait for the PC version of FFXV and start moving my way to PC exclusivity. I'm anticipating FFXV a lot and the last thing I want is have to play a shitty gimped version because their engine isn't up to snuff.

So is the trailer just regular PS4 with optimizations?

This is how i feel, I have a feeling that the delay was just to wait for the ps4 pro. Won't be getting this day1 till i see what digital foundry has to say about the old ps4

I'm mostly fixated on two games which are releasing weeks after the PS4 Pro. It's easy to expect FFXV and TLG running like crap on the base model with perhaps Square and Sony putting extra time into the Pro to make the game run well there. Besides that I don't think there'll be much to talk about.

You're right though, this isn't a big deal. It's up to developers to make sure they're not making dumb decisions anyway. It's not a reviewer problem.

But we have reports from TGS that FFXV is already running really well on PS4 now...

No it wasn't. The master version people played at Gamescom had issues.

... that they could've solved with a day one patch. I really think they want the Ps4 PRO announced to start showing it in trailers and gameplay demos from now on. A marketing choice.

I actually completely believe Square that it's a bad look for the FF brand to look terrible until you download the patch.

That Gamescom former "gold version" shouldn't be out there at all.

Day 1 patch is not a good selling point.

The current trailers and impressions from TGS are way better than anyone expected on OG PS4.

It would have been shitty expecting people to experience the definitive version of the game on their OG console via a huge Day 1 patch.

+1

By running well, I meant that taking graphics into account too. I'll be very surprised if this trailer is what we can expect from the PS4 version.

You said you expect it to be running like crap on the base model. The reports from TGS is that it is a huge improvement over what they had at Gamescom and it looks and runs very well now.

Is the trailer the pro version or regular version?

You won't enjoy much popularity with this in here though. FFXV Gaf is generally salivating at the thought of the Pro and FFXV running on it. In contrast to most other places really.

They should have shown the PS4 Pro version.

Why? What about the over 90% that will actually play the game on their regular PS4s and Xbox Ones and want to see in the trailer what the game actually looks like on their console? No BS, no false/misleading advertising.

Perhaps relative to Gamescom, but again, I don't expect it to be a huge leap to what this trailer is showing. The Dengeki stream wasn't as good.

Anyway, this'll keep going in circles. I don't even know what's being talked about at this point. I think whatever happens it'll be a big topic of discussion, but the more I think the effect of reviews will be negligible, especially for later titles. I'll just believe what people actually playing the game right now at TGS. If it's as good as people are saying, it's a complete non issue.
