PSVR Review Thread

wait I'm confused.. when are the RIGS impressions hitting? Really wanted to see how it was before this thing shipped... which is next week on Thursday. :\

Don't take GAF so seriously, as this happens all of the time. A small problem happens with hardware, everyone blows it out of proportion and people cancel over petty shit. It's like a Soap Opera for gamers. I will happily be in line launch day getting my headset.

Still remember the wobbly PS4.

I don't think Rigs was sent out to the press. Or it's on a separate embargo.

It's a game I really want to know about as well.

Had never even heard of this game before, this looks awesome. Is there more than one level or is this on the demo disc?

7 levels I believe. It's a budget-priced release. Check out Jim Sterling's thoughts on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMOQ7qv6IIw&feature=youtu.be&t=12m55s What I like here is Jim chooses this game over all others as the one that really sells VR/PSVR to him. Others pick Batman, Drive Club, superhypercube etc. as being their standouts of the games they have access to so far for all kinds of reasons. I personally see this early strength in depth being far more appealing than what many say VR currently lacks - a single "killer app". Much better to see a wide breadth of games and experiences rather than that one game impulse buy that might be forgotten, along with the hardware, just as quickly with no further reason to don the helmet.

I'm not getting a PSVR yet (have a Rift) but I am interested in this game. The only thing that bugs me is aiming with your head. I remember the developers saying they tried different aiming schemes and this way works the best, but it doesn't sit right with me at all, and watching gameplay doesn't really help. I'd be happy if I was wrong though, we need more competitive multiplayer VR.

Its a $20 standalone game, there are multiple levels and it'll surely be pretty replayable if youre going for score attack or such. It comes off as a gimmicky kinda launch game that you'd typically see from new platforms, but if theres some meat on the bones I think it'll be worth it for the price

Plus this thing is launching in october and this looks to be one of the few scary games for PSVR right now, at $15 on Amazon Prime it's a no-brainer to pick up and play at my Halloween party this year with friends.

This whole thread has been:

I saw a video, now I'm sure I don't want it!

I saw a video, now I'm sure I want it!

I mean, that's cool -- that's why we watch these impressions, it's just funny lol

I have looked forward to, and dreamed of VR since I was was a kid and I'm 39 now. Next week I have PSVR on its way........and Im considering cancelling it.

The games don't seem to be compelling and most are nothing more than mini games/tech demos. Full games such as Resident Evil 7 have been slated for motion sickness. The judder/drift seems to be an annoyance even if you can find ways of rectifying it. I won't have any Move controllers as I refuse to pay another £67 for old 2010 tech.

I just don't know, I watch videos of Batman and when I see the player looking in the mirror at Batman looking back hands stammering like he is cold turkey, meh. I think the only game to even look remotely good so far is Farpoint with the aim controller, that looks promising.

I think VR is the future, I have always thought it, but now that its almost here it feels premature and under developed.

Luckily mine is from Amazon, so if I get bored of it quickly Im sure Amazon will gladly take it back for a refund if I find a defect ;)

this whole thing is very situational. It seems like this thing is either hit or miss.

I'm just going to buy it, and if I don't like it I have 30 days to return it. It's not a huge deal.

From the reviews and videos I've seen I've gathered that overall it's a very fun experience. The only severe miss I've heard from is Giant Bomb, but I didn't see the stream so I can't really comment.

Cancelled pre order due to knowing I had a lack of funds. Gutted.

I hope that one day the breakout box will be available in white, to match my console.

What are everyone's planned launch purchases?
I'm thinking:
RIGS
Driveclub
Until Dawn
Thumper
And maybe VR worlds as the disc to use when I get my family to have a go.

Until Dawn, REZ Infinite, RIGS, and Driveclub for me.

Waiting for deals on EVE Valkyrie and Battlezone.

Well thats pretty shitty

I just cancled mine.

Been debating doing so because I have a new toy itch that needs scratching, but realizing RE7 isnt out till late winter... Makes it less of a need to pick one up now.

Plus, by that time there will be more post launch debriefings and issues / strengths should bubble up.

I'm thinking PS4 PRO for now, and waiting till there's more compelling story telling and gameplay experiences out there. I just haven't been too impressed with what's on offer (especially for the pricing) just yet, if I'm honest.

I finally got the opportunity to try this yesterday. First time with any current VR. Completely blown away!! It surprises me the number of people considering canceling, but I understand if it's based on Sonys level of support with other stuff like this... But man... I've never been so immersed in a game as I was in that 10 min demo of Eve Valkyrie. So much regret for not pre ordering. If I'm lucky enough to find one on release I'm buying it that second for sure. Even my fiancée who gets motion sickness loved it without any issues.

rigs, driveclub and battlezone. all physical. if i like the experience (ie, don't feel it's a gimmick, doesnt make me vomit, the games are fun and worth keeping) i'll then download some digital releases. and those would be thumper, super hyper cube and here they lie.

i'm avoiding anything that requires the move controllers if possible.

I applied a Amazon gift card. My card on file is no longer valid and CS wouldn't let me change without altering delivery date. So I purchased a gift card for $536.

That's a way to lock it down. XD

Data Ghost, the RE7 issues that caused motion sickness have been fixed in later builds from what's been told.

Any reasons why? Just curious. I found the move games to be the most immersive.

never liked motion controls really, and i don't feel like VR is going to change much in regards to that. plus the pattern so far seems to be VR games that use the motion controls are less full fledged experiences. and i'd rather have a bunch of proper games instead since it's ultimately what i'll go back to more often rather then something shallow and simple like batman (as nice as it looks)

plus i just don't fancy paying even more then i am for 2 wands. lol. i MIGHT get the gun peripheral for farpoint if it ends up being a fantastic game, but i doubt it.

I'm about to cancel myself.. I can't fight the novelty waiting to happen feeling. I was a loser with the Move (though Sports Champions to this day is very underrated) Vita didn't do so well, though I love it to death... I know some here say "you can't compare Sony's past failures to PSvr" why not? The Move was supposed to be a new way to experience games too. The intoxicating feeling of new hardware has worn off. I've gone back to my original stance.. I feel it will sell well out the gate (as pre-order figures suggest) and then fade. The games are experiences, but not full ones. The low res screen, blurry IQ.. I want PS4 level graphics and resolution at the very least... Too many cords, not plug and play as it should be.. I can get past the low res, blurry IQ, and even the sloppy setup if the games are there. So, for now I'll be watching, as opposed to buying it at launch and waiting for the good content (complete games) to come.

Why would they do that? They don't have an open box policy?

If it's directly from Amazon. It's no questions asked, no restocking..

This is what I am worried about. The hardware seems fine as a first generation headset but the way Sony dropped a few other pieces of hardware has me worried. Not sure PSVR can be propped up for years by indies and Japanese developers and publishers like the Vita.

huh? why? if we've seen anything from PC VR, Cardboard, and the PS VR launch thread and such, indies can handle VR just fine.

The difference is that the move wasn't new technology. The move was trying to capitalize on the wiis success and didn't really offer any content that implemented the hardware in any new way. The vita was just a handheld. It was the follow up to the psp. But it didn't do anything different than any other handheld, games just looked really nice on it.

VR is new tech, it's a completely new way to play a game. You really can't compare them.

Jeff Bakalar from CNET talks about the shtty tracking on the new Beatcast.

Still positive impressions overall, but people in here pretending the tracking is perfect should start managing their expectations.

one thing i'm super curious about is my partner is partially sighted and has nystagmus. we're both looking forward to finding out if he can even experience VR. he can see 3D in cinema and TV's, i'm hoping he can get the full experience. but even if he can't i'm interested to see what he does experience from it.

To each their own. But motion controls is a whole different thing in vr than it was with the wii/ps3. But yeah, it's very possible that it'll be limited to shorter games.

What is the most "full game" experience that is out on any VR platform now? Because I can't think of one that's good?

DriveClub
The pool game I cant recall
Here they Lie
Rez
Superhypercube
Eve Valkyrie
Considerino RIGS and Battlezone (not sure about MP games)

Should have all bases covered in terms of experience. Plan to give back to GS atcleast a couple of games ASAP.

Amazon will replace or refund an item within a year no questions asked. Im not sure they even test anything that is sent back to them as defective. Not sure what they do with it all to be honest.

I am on my 4th PS4. All previous ones either had ridiculously loud fans or very weak disk loading mechanisms. Amazon replaced each one in a flash with a brand new unopened console with a new 12 month warranty. If it had been from anywhere else they would have told me to go to Sony who would have replaced with a refurbished unit. Always buy from Amazon if I can.

Yeah that's crazy, I assumed if it wasn't open. But to take back open electronics is crazy. What about opened games and movies? You just pay return shipping?

Never played the Rift, and only spent a few hours with the Vive last week-end. So I'm not in the best position to tell you this.

The highlights for me were Raw Data and Vanishing Realm. No idea how much time you can put on the first, but I know the second one is considered "short", as my friend told me you can get through it in about 90 minutes or so? Raw Data has co-op missions.. so that should last a while I'm guessing?

Why are people judging this based on launch titles? If you're that unsure, then wait 6mo to a year and then decide if you want to buy one based on available software.

If an item is defective you don't even pay return shipping :)

Not sure about games or movies though. Id imagine thats different.

I know what you mean, but personally I am dubious that we will ever really see fully fledged games with the current hardware, particularly from Sony. I wouldn't wait 6 months to purchase as the hardware is already outdated before its even released.

Id be happy using the standard PS4 controller for first person games with the VR headset for added immersion. If enough come along like this then it would be a worthwhile purchase for me.

Oddly enough, this is exactly what turned me off with OG Wii & motion control in general. Seeing on-screen cursors, target reticles, etc. jitter and jump like an over-caffeinated amphetamine junkie made me not want to have anything to do with the tech at all.

Maybe it's just a symptom of having your hand floating out there in open space. You can try to stabilize the infallibility of non-resistant motion controls by dampening the user input, but it seems like an systemic issue with the tech itself either way.

Pretty big turn off for me in spite of being curious about "cockpit VR" experiences (driving games, space shooters, etc.). Makes me feel like I can wait for the kinks to be ironed out, or 2nd/3rd gen hardware evolutions.

Yes driving and flying games should be amazing, looking forward to trying Driveclub VR even though I don't like the game itself. Want to see how well it works from a tech perspective.

you mean like RIGS, battlezone, driveclub, DiRT, project cars, RE7, GT:sport? those are the ones i'm most looking forward to as well. and that's more games than i needed to justify my PS4 and xbone purchase. i think it'll do fine. we'll get adapted games, new games, full games, and "experience" type games. big budget and indie... the amount of games in development is kinda staggering to me.

It's a catch-22. The motion sickness isn't a function of resolution or framerate (assuming a suitable framerate is realized). It's a biological response that won't go away until people develop a resistance. In the VR community it is referred to as getting your "VR Legs".

It's a catch-22 also, because the types fully fledged AAA games with campaign length narratives are going to lend themselves to being first person. All of the motion compensating techniques (usually called comfort mode) that either use teleportation or fixed angle rotation (where a bump in the rotation axis will jump 20 degrees) are immersion breaking.

My point, if we hope VR to become a platform where AAA titles can exist and to be immersive without gimmicky locomotion band-aids, then people are going to have to adapt and become resistant to motion sickness.
