Final Fantasy XV first 45 minute gameplay video (final build of the game)

game reminds me of FF1, of all things. where you could wander off into a cave or some area and get completely rekt.

been really skeptical of Day One-ing this but i'm coming around
Well, Sakaguchi himself agrees with you and has become best buddies with Tabata in the last months because he liked his mentality, which reminded him of himself back in the days:

The amount of animations and dynamic interaction is just insane. Never seen anything like this. Definitely the new gold standard.

The Eurogamer video was amazing, I love how nights are actually really fucking dangerous. It's not just "different stuff come out at night, stay up all the time to enjoy all of the content", you'll actually get your ass kicked majorly for going out at night. This is amazing for setting reasons, but also for people seeking a challenge they can't get on the main story and for later-game content. Just revisiting the same areas but venturing at night (and I assume at some point the night stuff may even be permanent, for plot reasons) will provide you an entirely different experience, with different monsters to fight that are much stronger than that area's regular enemies.

Another little thing I loved to know for sure through that video was that the radio lore-stuff plays over music, so I won't have to wait until NG+ to listen to cool shit while driving around, the game will play important audio over my music anyway. That's awesome. It would be sad not listening to any of the music available even when sidequesting just for fear of losing relevant story information.

My biggest hope is that that older design that you get to play him as isn't some sort of faster aging or "he aged while in stasis" kind of thing since the biggest reason I want to play as more older protagonists isn't because of looks but because of personality/how they act. Playing as someone who has actually experienced more of life instead of someone who needs to have a coming of age story or grow up and become more mature.

But I do also have a massive love for progression in stories so I will also be fine if they can show that, moving from immature to a complete person/adult. It is hard to find that in video games though as your normally stuck as the character you start the game with until maybe the ending where they decide to give a payoff instead of it happening in game with you still playing after the change has been made.

PS: Anyone have any info on the new ascension grid? Trying hard not to watch anything else till launch but I'm really interested in that.

It'll most likely be a time skip, unfortunately.

But to be honest, I don't mind it too much. I even find it refreshing, nowadays.

It may not be anything new for this genre, but if you've been playing enough western AAA games, you certainly got your fair share of older, experienced protagonists. For a while, middle-aged man seemed to be the new bald space marine.

The more footage I watch from this game, the more I realize how rare it is in videogames to see real friendship portrayed. You may see it talked about, but how often does it affect your actual gaming experience? Here you have not only the constant banter, but even gameplay systems are designed around them caring for each other, and protecting the prince at all costs. Everything just fits perfectly into that setting and the idea they're going for.

It's very evident when you see the guy in the Eurogamer preview getting so excited about Gladio reading a book. It's just a game character holding a book in front of his face while sitting. Why is that so special? Because we rarely get to see who people are outside of the role they have in the game's central gameplay element. Was this "most games", Gladio would be nothing more than the tough guy who kills shit, maybe he would pick up a book during a cutscene to show you how much they subverted your expectations, but just casually doing it during gameplay just adds so much character.

When games do try to give you a more human side of characters, it's usually at the cost of gameplay, with a bunch of forced slow walking and mundane stuff that you'll loathe during replays, but Gladio picking up a book while you drive to your next destination is a lovely little piece of characterization, that doesn't get in your way at all. Everything in this game in general seems to be designed not to waste your time. Aside from the forced slow walking while pushing your car at the beginning, it's surprising to see such a story driven game instantly opening up to you and giving you a bunch of combat systems, weapons and saying "go nuts". FFXIII started with an exciting scenario and combat right away, but it took hours for you to actually have access to the real combat system. Here, you don't have to wait until the characters learn everything. Noctis can warp because he can warp, they have their link strikes and shit because they're friends for many years now, everything is already contextualized and doesn't waste your time by holding the fun back from you. I love it.

... I went seriously off-topic here. Sorry.

Wow, that's made me more hyped for this game than anything I've seen so far.

I fully expect this game to have its issues, but I'm really impressed with how bold it's being trying to find the future of this series.
It's exactly the same reason I hold VIII in such high regard, despite its faults.

Yeah, I noticed and appreciate that too.

Another small thing: if you turn off the Stamina sprint bar, how can you use that boost trick without seeing when to let go of the button for a instant replenish?

The team battle animations are awesome. When the player is playing well they blend together to make some truly impressive looking fights.

Speaking of JRPG tropes, fancy the changes from versus XIII or not, now the opening of this game is basically 'protagonist leaves hometown on errand, returns to see it toasted'.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Won't give up on Noct, though, he's is goddamn adorable with his naps and sh*t!

YES!

This is so cute.

Many fanarts will feature him sleeping around with the boys, I'm assuming. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yeah, I noticed and appreciate that too.

I guess you have to learn how long it lasts.

It looks so fun, though, I'm definitely keeping my stamina meter.

All I want to turn off is the current quest below the mini-map, the constant button prompts and the quest marker on screen. Maybe the mini-map as well.

Taba-chan, please, PLEASE, let me do all this.

Button prompts is a given, we can see that in the GameSpot preview, but everything else we'll have to wait and see.

I updated the OP with the new vids. Did not expect Bomb to be in the game. I always thought they would be too goofy for the XV world.

Wait, really? They've been taking inspirations from the classic FF monsters since the Versus days. Almost all the monsters are based on Amano and Nomura's old drawings. Even Cactuar has been confirmed to appear in the game.

IMO we can definitely expect all the classic FF monsters to be in. All of them. I can't wait to see the Magic Pot.

Their point was that it's not as realistic as the other more animal-like monsters. And SE seems to have those more fantastical ones at night as "daemons", which justifies their existence in the world more probably.

Why is there an audi R8 in that Kingsglaive gif?

A marketing deal with Audi, I believe they are gonna auction it off some time in the future (not 100% sure, though). Having watched the film, I would say that is the only moment the logo is clearly noticeable, and that could possibly even be because of the fact that it was spoken about specifically during the Uncovered event.

I'm guessing it's intended to be watched before playing the game?

Though Tabata says the order doesn't really matter, I would recommend watching it as an introduction, it functions quite well as such (and tells some stories that provide a good background for the start of the game).

It's not really necessary to understand the game's story but it fleshes out some of the events before and during the game's beginning and what happens to the main party's kingdom while they were sent away by the king to Noctis' marriage for a at first seemingly peaceful road-trip. Watching it before makes probably more sense. The Anime is nice too fleshing out the characters' back stories. It's free and only 10min episodes each. Well we've seen a Cactuar in Altissia and they've confirmed it will be a fightable enemy in the game.

Aside from their look there is nothing particularly unbelievable about Bombs. Conceptually the Numb Blades are much less realistic (and less iconic too) yet they're in.

I hope quests are completable without turning on the quest markers. I don't think so though; the quest that Cindy had them complete by killing varmints didn't give a hint for where to go after slaying the first bunch. The EG guys had to follow the marker to know where the next batch were.

Yeah, you're right. I'm actually not that fond of Numb Blades being normal enemies even if they're in a desolate, dark mine. It's a bit inconsistent with the whole theme of the game. They should've made the more fantastical monsters daemons only at night.

Uhm, but how are the Bombs less realistic than Numb Blades, or Nagas while we're at it? :D Flying, burning rocks with a grim face that self-explode. They're equally unrealistic, if anything.

Oh, and Cactuar in Altissia? You sure? AFAIK we saw it the for first time 1-2 weeks ago in this image (and the image was also on the FFXV-themed trains in Tokyo, IIRC):

They're probably not, unfortunately, but they could at least let you turn off the one that appears in the middle of our screen at any given time. The mini-map and actual map are more than enough. It's a look to the side or a button away from you. No need to have all three.

If it was something like, you press a button and it'll show on your screen for a couple of seconds, making it so you can turn off your mini map without having to worry about where to go, that would be amazing, but they're really treating us like morons with the default HUD setup.

Woah, so cool! O: I hadn't noticed this the last time I looked at that graphic at all.

Tabata said a while ago Tonberries aren't in the game, right? They'd probably look very creepy in FFXV's realistic art style...

The first 3 FFs were guilty of this. I remember in FFII, just strolling slightly out of the area that was relevant to progressing the story(and you COULD do this VERY easily, even early in the game), you'd encounter and get ripped apart by considerably higher level enemies. I actually like that FFXV is doing something similar.

See:
They said there is no Tonberry last year, but Game Informer said in their Q&A after they played the prologue a few months ago that they saw one in the monster gallery.

Which video did that samdstorm video come from?

Is the Eurogamer vid the best one to watch if I only can watch one of them?
YES (unless you don't want to hear commentary and want to hear the game's own music and sound - there are some new background songs during exploration or the Ardyn cutscene). It also has the superior thread
:P

Dunno about your first question. I don't remember it being in the Eurogamer one.

Yes, I too was pleasantly surprised to see that Gladio can read. lol

Well we've seen a Cactuar

I hope there's a sidequest where the guys go on a search for it, expecting him to be all tiny, only to discover something like this:

It's pretty looking but as a film it fails at every aspect of what makes a good film
-acting
-sound design
-editing
-pacing
-writing
-story

They should REALLY stop attempting to make FF films because A)they keep flopping, and B)they're always bascially tech demos to show off how nice CGI can look, thing is, we already have Disney and Pixar films that do this and everyone in the VFX industry always knows how good CGI can look.

While watching the old footage from the Gamescom build during the fishing sequence there is a lure that says it's modeled after the Tonberry daemon, but I thought Tabata said Tonberrys were not in the game?
