ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - (10/10/16) - Donald Trump opened his Trump Taj Mahal casino 26 years ago, calling it "the eighth wonder of the world."

But his friend and fellow billionaire Carl Icahn is closing it this morning, making it the fifth casualty of Atlantic City's casino crisis.

The sprawling Boardwalk casino will shut its doors at 5:59 a.m. Eastern Time, having failed to reach a deal with its union workers to restore health care and pension benefits that were taken away from them in bankruptcy court.

Nearly 3,000 workers are losing their jobs, bringing the total jobs lost by Atlantic City casino closings to 11,000 since 2014.

Trump tells The Associates Press he thinks both sides should have been able to reach a deal to save the casino.

Awful for the workers.

Living in NJ there is nothing better than seeing Atlantic City go belly up. Hand out after hand out and they cannot get anything to work. They don't deserve a monopoly on gaming, and their failures is putting money into the pockets of NY and PA.

Atlantic City is in a tough place. They should legalize things (hint hint) that aren't currently legal in order to stop the bleeding.

Trump Kush!

"I make the best *takes a hit*... jesus, I'm fucking running for president."

Too bad he wasn't present, he would have negotiated the best deal.

Trump on his negotiating skills if anyone has blocked them from their minds:

Donald J Trump from the 10/9 debate said:
You say who's making these deals? We're going the make great deals.

Donald J Trump from the 9/26 debate said:
But that's the kind of thinking that our country needs. When we have a country that's doing so badly, that's being ripped off by every single country in the world, it's the kind of thinking that our country needs, because everybody -- Lester, we have a trade deficit with all of the countries that we do business with, of almost $800 billion a year. You know what that is? That means, who's negotiating these trade deals?

We have people that are political hacks negotiating our trade deals.

Donald J Trump from the 9/26 debate said:
You have -- wait a minute. Wait a minute, Lester. You asked me a question. Did you ask me a question?

You have to be able to negotiate our trade deals. You have to be able to negotiate, that's right, with Japan, with Saudi Arabia. I mean, can you imagine, we're defending Saudi Arabia? And with all of the money they have, we're defending them, and they're not paying? All you have to do is speak to them. Wait. You have so many different things you have to be able to do, and I don't believe that Hillary has the stamina.

Donald J Trump from the 9/26 debate said:
So, yeah, I think -- I do think it's time. Look, it's all words, it's all sound bites. I built an unbelievable company. Some of the greatest assets anywhere in the world, real estate assets anywhere in the world, beyond the United States, in Europe, lots of different places. It's an unbelievable company.

But on occasion, four times, we used certain laws that are there. And when Secretary Clinton talks about people that didn't get paid, first of all, they did get paid a lot, but taken advantage of the laws of the nation.

Now, if you want to change the laws, you've been there a long time, change the laws. But I take advantage of the laws of the nation because I'm running a company. My obligation right now is to do well for myself, my family, my employees, for my companies. And that's what I do.

But what she doesn't say is that tens of thousands of people that are unbelievably happy and that love me. I'll give you an example. We're just opening up on Pennsylvania Avenue right next to the White House, so if I don't get there one way, I'm going to get to Pennsylvania Avenue another.

But we're opening the Old Post Office. Under budget, ahead of schedule, saved tremendous money. I'm a year ahead of schedule. And that's what this country should be doing.

We build roads and they cost two and three and four times what they're supposed to cost. We buy products for our military and they come in at costs that are so far above what they were supposed to be, because we don't have people that know what they're doing.

When we look at the budget, the budget is bad to a large extent because we have people that have no idea as to what to do and how to buy. The Trump International is way under budget and way ahead of schedule. And we should be able to do that for our country.

Atlantic City is a relic of the past... it's going to turn into Camden 2.0 fast unless we fix it ASAP.

It's probably unfixable at this point.

There are better beaches closer to your house, and there are better places to gamble closer to your house.

Why travel a long distance to get inferior versions of both?

Turning it into a vice haven isn't going to make it any better.

Yep. With the proliferation of casinos in other states there's no reason to go there.

11,000 jobs lost in just two years is pretty terrible. Feel bad for those folks.

Sad but true. As a Jersey resident my whole life, it's hard to watch everything closing. I was just there just a few months ago and it's a shell of what it used to be. The surrounding city is an absolute dump outside of the boardwalk, outlets, and casinos . Old and decrepit buildings and homes everywhere. Damn shame.

As someone said, they should start converting it into a beach town before it's too late.

I'm not a big gambler, but why did AC decline so badly? Foxwoods?

I mean, it's next to one of the biggest population centers in the US.

Went to AC a couple of months ago, had to walk through the husk of the other Trump casino in order to get to the beach. Had a pretty good sub place beside where I stayed, and they had a location inside the taj mahal, feel bad for them and the jobs inside their.

Funny, that and the Revel were the only 2 casino's I could see from the condo...

This is my opinion. But the casinos relied to heavily on the older gambling crowd and never adjusted to younger and modern tastes. Las Vegas evolved. Not only can you gamble there, but it's also now one of the best places to see a show, eat, have a great drink, and even do family stuff.

In AC, when all the old people died, not enough of the younger generation came to keep these giant casinos afloat.

Even the areas around the casinos are a dump. You can sum up the current situation in Atlantic City with this single picture:

Bingo.

Atlantic City never evolved beyond the casino. If you weren't gambling there was nothing else to do there and I never understood why they tried to convince families to vacation there. They tried to remedy this with the outlets and that disaster of a mall but it was a huge swing and miss. People don't go to Atlantic City to shop for tudor watches and shit. People are there gambling with their SS checks, making $50 and re-gambling with it. No one is going out of there to way shop at an H&M they can find 20 miles closer

I'm pretty sure most people in that tri-state area who want beaches in the area just go to the more family friendly Delaware beaches or even Ocean City, MD.

Everyone in this thread realizes that Trump doesn't own the Taj Mahal, or even the parent company anymore, right. Carl Icahn is the controlling stakeholder now, so be angry with him. I understand it's easy and fun to bash Trump, but come on...he legitimately had nothing to do with it.

Bingo.

Plus places in PA and NY created real resorts that cater to more than the hardcore gamblers AC gets.

AC tried to go young and hip with the Borgata and the Revel, and now only the Borgata stands and the Revel went under and is getting rebranded as something else.

The only decent thing is the Borgata when they get some good music or comedy acts down there.

Letting AC have a monopoly on gaming in NJ was a huge mistake.

I can't stand the NO on North Jersey Casino ads they are running. AC you had a 100% control of casinos and couldn't do anything with it. The town is a crap hole and should just be demolished and go back to nature.

The No on NNJ Casinos people have an issue with casinos which could compete with PA and NY and keep money in the state, but have no issue with the Xanadu/American Dream mall complex which is 10 years behind schedule from opening and costs have went into the billions before a single penny of revenue has been brought in.

Wow I just stayed there back in May. Like what is even left on the boardwalk? Bally's Caeser's and Tropicana?

White House Subs?

Like him of hate him Trump has had no involvement in Trump Entertainment Resorts since 2009 so this actually has nothing to do with him. He has tried a couple of times to stop them from using his name but they keep winning and continue to use it.

But on topic it seems scummy that they are closing over health care and not that business just isn't good enough. Surprised the workers didn't cave since no job is worse than a job without benefits in what sounds like a job market that is being flooded with unemployed workers. But good on them for not giving in to scummy business tactics.

Edit: NinjaMouse beat me to it.

Ah ok then, didn't know that.

I withdraw my previous shade

There's way more competition in the immediate area too as others have said. Instead of AC, lots of people are going to places like the Sands Casino/Resort in Bethlehem or Mohegan Sun in CT instead.

It sucks that people are out of work now because of pure greed.
