Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

It's dawning on me how cool and unusual it is for a portable system to actually be made from the ground-up to support local multiplayer. A usable screen, two detachable controllers, and capable of playing a wide variety of games. This is a pretty new thing, right?

What a sin play games like this.

I can't imagine people ever playing the Switch like this. The tiny controllers seem like they'd be terribly uncomfortable when detached and used that way. I think Nintendo is overestimating the "party on the go" aspect of the Switch.

Missed opportunity to use Will Smith's song called Switch in the trailer. Kidding. For some reason, the actual sliding on and off of the controllers seems very janky and not smooth at all. There were a couple times where it looked like the people in the video had to struggle (lightly) to yank the damn things off. And trying to play games on the go with that tiny-ass Powerpoint slide changer of a controller? I don't know about that...

Excited as fuck for Splatoon 2 and that new Mario though. Would loooove if it took place in the Super Mario Land 1 and 2 universes!

So we saw the Switch (No longer NX, that'l get some adjusting to remember) in multiple modes in this trailer. We saw it in its docked/standard play mode; this is with the screen/unit docked to a larger unit and the two halves of the screen (controllers) docked to a sleek controller housing - this is all likely included in the box.
We saw it in its undocked/portable play mode; with the controllers attached to either side of the screen and being used in various locations - we also see that this screen houses the media input port, which is cartridges, similar to the 3DS.
We saw it being played with a Switch Pro Controller which as 2 analogue sticks and a D-Pad, very similar to Xbox Controllers and the Wii U Pro Controller.

The main unit that powers the device seems to be the screen as that is where the media is inserted, does this mean their housing the entire power of this unit inside that very thin screen? I'm assuming all the dock does is upscale the image maybe with some post-processing to look good (1080) on the TV screen while the main portable screen is of lower resolution. Lot's of crazy tech in works here I think.

I imagine the main SKU of the Switch will be the dock, screen, attachable controllers and controller housing for on TV play. They will release the pro controller as a separate optional purchase.

I'm pretty excited for the eventual line up reveal for launch titles - that new Mario and what seems to be either updated or entirely new versions of Mario Kart and Splatoon; very exciting!

I like the look and I was sold on the idea since the first time I heard it. I don't know about that controller though, but then again I won't really know until I actually try it out. First Nintendo home console that I've seriously considered getting since probably the N64.

So can I trade my wii u CD in for a cartridge or do I need to buy the game again?

You, you realize it's not going to be the same WiiU games, right? You realize that there's no way that this would be compatible with WiiU games?

If they remaster something for this console, yes you'll have to buy it.

Some of the questions in this thread have me face palming hard.

- Come on. It's Nintendo. There are no reasons to expect better games, better infrastructure, better customer service, better online, or a better line-up than with the Wii U.

Except for the fact that both 1st and 3rd party studio's, don't have to "switch" between handheld or console. Every handheld game is automatically on console. Every console game is automatically on the handheld. So yes, most certainly the line-up will be better.

So those games are running natively on the portable console? That seems crazy. I'm dying to know the battery life.

Confirms Xbox controller is the greatest controller of all time, Nintendo are taking notes from it. Do they have the same triggers??

At the end it was exactly what we all thought it was going to be. Design wise it's beautiful, as for the rest I'm skeptical. People are already talking about "home console graphics on handheld" when it's more likely to be "handheld graphics on home console" for a good number of reasons, unless there's magic somewhere. With PS4 Pro and Scorpio, I wonder if that will be enough for some gamers.
The size is what worries me most. How many people are going to play home console designed games on the go, on a screen that's too small to fully appreciate the experience and at the same time too big to carry around, when people already have smartphones of 5"-6", tablets / surface / whatever in the bag. I mean, I'd love to play Mario Kart split screen outisde but not on a screen the size of my hand.
These downsides could quicly make Switch become a weak home console, mostly, and a handheld, rarely. It feels more like a long range Wii U.. but it could be a fake problem.

The greatest thing about it, indeed, is the unified library. That's gold for every Nintendo gamer and a good strategy for Nintendo. There's a good chance for success, in my opinion.

Yup, Nintendo got me good. I wasn't interested in the WIi U at all but this looks great to me. Plus I have a tablet that basically functions as a youtube player at this point, so if they have the right app support for it this thing might literally replace my ipad.

And I actually really like the way you can use multiple controllers and all that. It all looks pretty neat.

Fuck it, I'm super sold...

...Unless it turns out to be super expensive.

I think one extremely genius part of the dock is the fact that it simply covers the screen. I don't know why no one thought about that. It's so elegant!

I am absolutely stunned by the sheer awesomeness of this system: playing awesome games (Skyrim!) on the go is an amazing feature, and has secured a purchase from me. Still would like to know some other details, like its computational power and its battery life (and how the handheld and console setups differ from one another), but all in all an amazing showing.

That trailer was also amazingly crafted. It showed basically everything 3 minutes could offer, and made it unambiguous how the system functions. Kudos to Nintendo!

And lastly, Neogaf servers' knees buckling under the weight of the hype!

Yep, I'm gonna buy one. I really like that idea and the design.

God that trailer though, trying to appeal to that "cool trendy SF" crowd just seems out of place, imo. Should have used usual nerdy looking dudes in the Iwata basement.

Hey rooftop friends, hold on, I'll come over, just let me grab my Nintendo Switch™

I can't get over that bezel. Makes it look like old tech, like an amazon Kindle.

I wonder if it's there to make it more structurally resistant to all the children who will no doubt be dropping it.

Overall, a really disappointing design aesthetic. Also, I can't imagine my adult friends gathering around a tiny screen to play multiplayer games with those tiny controllers -- but 10 year old kids at school are going to eat this up!

The handheld is sexy as fuck. Such a huge departure from the 3DS/Wii U era too, think about it

No IR remote
No touchscreen (from what is shown)
No Dual screen
No Gyro (from what is shown)

Just a pure hardcore gaming handheld ala Vita but much more powerful.

Can you believe it?

Yep it's a lot more traditional and I love that. I'm sure there will be some gimmicks but overall looks like Nintendo is getting back more to what makes them great.

Not going to buy all those Mario Karts and other ports(?) again, so might as well buy more 3rd parties then. And of course the new Mario! Looks awesome.

But like with Wii U, I won't be there day 1, will wait until more games and it also depends on the price.

Kart had two items per character. Splatoon had new poses. Mario looked unique.

If they have a new Kart/Mario/Splatoon/Zelda launch, plus several high-rep 3rd party games like Skyrim? That'll sell like hot cakes.

I need to digest this for a few days. At first thought it feels like a console designed around idyllic situations people on TV always have, but people n real life rarely experience. Something a lot of people think they'll use. basically a mobile kids console marketed to hipster millennials. It could work.It feels very fresh and very stale, like it would have been the amazing 10 years ago. I noticed they really pushed the clicking fixation, who doesn;t like popping packing bubbles. execution and details are going to make or break it. They're very smart selling it as a lifestyle.

edit: It reminds me of every time I think Im going to get back into mobile gaming on a 7" tablet and moga controller. and quit because its such a pain. This could work.
