I mean... even if people aren't going to take it out of the house, and don't plan to ever undock it...

As a Wiiu owner I think they are in for a pleasant surprise. Being able to keep my game going when I need to go to another room, or laying in bed, or when my girl "needs" to watch something on the TV, has been so awesome.

Yeah, it really was a game changer for me. I brought my Wii U to my parent's house during Christmas holidays. My parents could watch TV while I played Earthbound. Was great.

This is how I'm feeling. Nintendo games don't really do anything for me, and nothing in this video hardware showcase has sold me. I guess it's cool to have a tablet with built in controllers?

My issue is this.

The main issue with the diminishing handheld space was the lack of a compelling argument why anyone would carry one in the age of smartphones. Handhelds were losing that argument. The "console style games on the go" argument was lost with Vita already, and people decided 99 cent smartphone games were preferrable.

What does this do to change that issue? What is the hook? People can play all third party games on more competent hardware elsewhere, and more portable games elsewhere. So you end up with the same problem as before, not compelling most of either audience.

At least that is how i see this playing out. Unless Nintendo has some remarkable marketing for the Switch.

How would that even work? Games are going to run worse when not in the dock? The Tegra chip is in the tablet, how would the dock even increase processing power.

To me it looks like just a device to charge the tablet, send the signal to the TV, handle accessories and external storage.

Because why would a docking station with extra power be impossible? Pretty sure thats possible tech wise.

I think the only Wii U port (not including Zelda) I'd get on this would be Pokken. It'll be much better on this with the way multiplayer works.

Also I can't access Gaf on my computer.

I despise the misaligned left and right analog sticks. Why the hell would they do this to their Pro Controller when they executed it perfectly last-gen?

Yo having the face buttons below the analog stick is some kind of satanic magic.

Parents are gonna have to buy like three of these, the design just feels like it's begging for some careless kid to destroy it.

Also I wonder if they're gonna do yearly tablet updates and stuff. Like you buy a bundle that includes the base, tablet, and controllers, but they release a new tablet every year or something.

Don't the controller parts have battery too? I wonder how long those last then.

And actually, do those contribute to the overall battery power of the console in portable mode? Is that even possible? Ah well, we'll see.

I had no interest in the WiiU, but man this thing has me. Not so much for first party(aside from the glorious looking Zelda game), but the list of devs that are working on games has me excited. From Software? Uh yes please, a portable Souls style game is what i've been wanting.

a monster hunter with decent graphics GachiGasm, that they can put all their software efforts into one device is pretty f'n exciting. battery life is a definite concern, i want to just be hype right now tho : (

I am highly skeptical, I worry that each component will have to have its own battery and all of the components, screen and controllers need to last a long while to be suitable as a portable

Im also skeptical that the portable aspect will limit the home games.

I worry battery life and console power go hand in hand and I worry they will limit eachother.

This tech is awesome but I also thinks it's less exciting than VR to me personally and I can't really justify buying both a switch and a VR headset.

I do really like the concept and I want it to succeed because I do like what Nintendo is doing, I am in awe on a purely technical level but slightly less excited as a practical gamer

I think it is fairly safe to assume that most attachments will somehow avoid the battery issue

I think it's way too big to fill the Nintendo handheld space. You'd have to always have a bag or a back pack to transport it.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this sells GameCube numbers.

Impressed really, thats pretty nice and a very novel idea

the most impressive thing though is how many people knew of this and kept their mouths shut! hot damn what was the penalty for breaking the NDA? their first born child?

Gotta say, I don't give a single damn about playing multiplatform games on this thing, I don't care about the dumb looking-small controllers, and I don't care about taking that big ass tablet thing on the go.

But the idea of all Nintendo devs focused on one platform? I'm 100% sold.

Now I'm just hoping the price is right.

This is a remarkably salient point. This simplifies so much for Nintendo. They can bring the full might of the company on one device.

At this point, it really does not matter if they get good third party support: the damn thing will have plenty of games from them alone.

Yep, I see this potentially selling the same as Wii U. This isn't going to attract anyone new. Underpowered console that will only be good for Nintendo exclusives.

Will be interesting to see what's in the dock; it looks too big to be a big empty piece of plastic with TV out and some USB ports. But having extra hardware would force devs to have two versions of each game, like with PS4 now.

The bigger problem with having extra hardware in there is that it would make switching from TV to portable play seamlessly difficult/impossible, I'd imagine. Though one thing that would maybe make sense is the hardware required to stream gameplay to twitch/youtube/etc, as that's something that may not make sense to have in the main unit.

That dedicated controller looks Ouya-level bad. I'm sure it'll work properly but the huge plastic in the center is ugly as hell. I'm really glad I'm not upgrading to PS4 Pro, my money's going to this.

I'll say this, I'm much more impressed than I expected to be. Whether Nintendo can deliver in terms of price, games, and sales remains to be seen.

Wasn't there rumors about how one of the innovations of the NX ecosystem would be new ways of pricing games and special deals/programs for those who buy a lot of games etc.?

Yeah that's the real question for me.
Like, is this just for the usual Nintendo Console stuff and they will release a "4DS" next year, or is this THE Nintendo device.
Basically combining the 2 lines, meaning we will get all the stuff that was usually DS/3DS exclusive on this thing too.

Considering the fact that they dissolved their seperate console/mobile ssoftware dev teams and combined them into one entity says to me that this is it.

No 4ds no third pillar

Odd that their video features nothing but hipsters, no kids or families at all.
Odd? Who watched the trailer?

I find it quite clever, actually, to focus on young adults *for this trailer*

Kids and parents will learn soon enough about the console, and the kiddy image of some past Nintendo consoles hurt the appeal of those among young adults.

For the same reason, I'm not surprised we've seen Splatoon, NBA, Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda and Skyrim... it's a deliberate choice.

So was there ever anymore information about when you go into mobile mode, its a "version" of the dock mode game?

I just realized in the video they are playing NBA2K is mobile mode, but its no way they are playing the full game with just half of the joy-con

I dont think that is actually the answer to the problem with the handheld market before though. Like does anyone think Vita failed because the games werent AAA console style enough?

I like it. Now I don't have to spend hundreds of dollars for a portable just for a handful of games. Now I get my console and portable in one set. I wonder if they will have a bundle for those who just want the portable stuff and I do wonder what they will do about the DS and 3DS games.

I hope the TV doesn't turn off when you used the screen control since I actually like having a map always on in the Wii U, especially for games like Zelda, Xenoblade X, and Splatoon. Although I have faith that isn't the case since Nintendo have shown they won't throw the baby out with the bath water since people just wanted them to utterly abandon the ideas the Wii U brought.

First impressions, the system is like what Nintendo wanted the Wii U to be, but they jump the curve too soon and the technology wasn't really there. It almost makes the Wii U look like a prototype. Which is fine, learn from you failures and take the best from it.

I'm just not feeling this. The hardware design philosophy & portability/MP play doesn't interest me one bit. There will be some great first party Nintendo games on it though hopefully.

It's gonna be disappointing sliding the controllers out and it doesn't sound like the sounds in the trailer.

Does the docking station have any guts to it, or is it just a dock with through ports and whatnot?

I'm a fanboy, so this is suspect, but it looks awesome. Not very different from what most expected, but still very surprising and interesting. My only gripe so far is the size of the logo on the dock (?), it would be way better if it was reduced to be about 1/5 of that.

Is the older crowd who don't play games really going to suddenly get into gaming because of this?

That 'barrier' will be far lower with any smartphone or tablet.

I am talking about older gamers. Clearly.

I am referring to lapsed gamers in their mid-to-late 30s, early 40s.

People who once liked playing more complex games, but just do not have the time or patience anymore to deal with bullshit.

If the device can essentially replace their tablet for the basics, then Nintendo may have a market here.

The trailer featured the type of demographic who buy iPhones, not Nintendo handhelds. I think they are dreaming if they think 'non standard gamers' are going to buy this thing. In significant numbers that is.

Main questions I have:

Touchscreen?
Motion controls? (guessing yes)
Possible to display different images on the screen and TV? (guessing no)
Battery life?
Support for past controllers?
VC strategy?

The touchscreen is the main thing; I think it would be a huge mistake to have no touchscreen— no VC for DS, 3DS, concessions must be made in porting Wii U games, much less attractive as a portable if controllers are always required (games like picross, and of course video shouldn't require them).

Of course the problem with having a touchscreen is that no game can require its use, since all games will need to work with the screen in the dock. So that severely hampers the types of games and control methods that are possible. Unless of course Nintendo allows portable-only games.

Lack of dual-screen is to me a big disappointment, and it seems so silly to have that nice extra screen that's rendered completely useless when using a TV.

What if in order to play 3DS or Wii U games on Switch or to play games like Four Swords Adventures (if they make any)... you'd need one Switch to be the main console hooked up to the TV, and then multiple other Switchs in handheld mode linked to it.

What if games that require a touch screen require a second Switch in order to play on the TV? Is that possible? Would Nintendo require people to buy multiple Switchs for that functionality?

I am 42 and interested in it. And all my friends who I had a conversation with over the last twenty minutes as well.

For people like you, there are already two options existing.

Isn't having choices great..

But they don't have Nintendo games.
