It's a better specced PS4. That's it. If the developer chooser higher frame rate that is up to them.

It's not always 100% the case but that's the general idea. It's an analogy dammit, why do I have to explain every single detail and caveat that goes with the analogy.

Too soon to tell. If you have a PS4 already I'd say don't bother. If you don't have a PS4, then absolutely go for the pro.

For sure you'll benefit more from it if you have PSVR and a 4k TV. Until games start running/looking really bad on the OG PS4 I see no reason to rush for the upgrade.

Given that this is the first real incremental console, everyone who buys at launch (or thereabouts) is a guinea pig, especially so for people with 1080p screens. Even if money is no option, I don't see the downside of waiting a couple weeks to read impressions from people in a similar situation as you, I'm sure they'll be some improvements but no one truly knows the extent.

yes it's up to them, but i don't think we will ever see a 4K checkerboard at 30fps with a 1080p/60fps mode, for consistency reasons, if they can get 60fps in the 4K mode then yes, absolutely.

If I owned a 4K TV, I would still use 1080p mode and allow my TV to upscale it.

Yeah from what I've heard it doesn't really sound worth it without the 4K tv.

I've upgraded to a 4K TV specifically for it. I don't think there is much incentive otherwise.

I think you are in for a shock. You will likely end up favoring the 1080p mode over whatever the game will look like in "4K".

Also be sure to sit close enough to your 4K TV for it to be worth it...

With my living room setup, I sit so far from the TV that a 4K TV will never be useful unless it is 80'+...

Except HDR... and I'm upset enough that it is only being included with 4K TVs that I am going to ignore the feature. I want a 1080p HDR TV.

But by the time I am ready to upgrade my TV, 4K/HDR will be old cheap tech.

Its not a dual GPU. It has a single GPU, they simply added twice the CU's in a mirror image on the die to mirror the pattern in the original PS4.

If sceptical, I'd say wait for reports from Digital Foundry and first reviews of games.

I also was a bit surprised by the twin GPU thing and wonder how that will pan out. However, if the console is quiet, pro versions of games aren't horribly bugged, and there is a fair amount of 1080p pro support, I'll probably get one at some point to just replace my current ps4.

Also, I'm holding out hope for a game bundle at some point. Maybe that won't happen before holiday though. How about a Last Guardian Pro Sony?

I'm getting one, but I don't have a ps4. A big factor for me is the improved remote play. I plan to play at least half of my games remotely so I figure it's worth the extra hundred.

If I had a ps4, I definitely would not upgrade.

I also think it should be a pretty big warning sign that Sonys communication is so poor this close to release. A lot of people still expect significant improvements mandatory in all games after November or something due to rumors prior to release. I think the only thing you should expect is what Sony promised - everything will be in 1080. Anything beyond that is probably not happening for VAST majority of games. I really don't think it's a worthwhile upgrade for 1080p TV owners.

If you care about performance and/or visual upgrades then yes, but I feel like to get the most out of those visual upgrades you'd need a 4K HDR TV to get the full benefit. Personally, I would probably just stick with my current PS4 if I didn't have a 4K TV, or better yet, buy the Slim model because my PS4 sounds like a vacuum.

Either way, this question will be properly answered when comparisons are readily available to be analysed in the weeks/months to come.

Depends on the game to how good the improvement will be, but yes you will see an Improvement. In some cases it will be minor (slight frame rate jump) in others it will mean higher quality textures. If you demand that, it is a must own. but like a PC, your old games will still work, just may not look as good or run as fast.

Good to hear! Had my Pre-Order since it went live and been hyped on it since. Can't come soon enough! I'm holding out buying tomb raider for it and also maybe buying BF1 if it bumps the res to 1080p. I cannot stand 900p.

I hope there will be a minor bump in performance for games that haven't been updated for it also.

I've seen PS4 pro running on 4k with HDR and the difference is massive imo (HDR being the main one), but the IQ benefits that will be brought over to 1080p sets through supersampling will definitely be worth it to still own one. I only have a 1080p set and will do for some time, but I can see that pro will be a plus in that regard. I really want to upgrade next year at some point though to a 4K HDR set.

As a 4K HDR TV owner the Pro is a no brainer to me. I know this is also a question of economics, but if you own a 4K HDR TV the logical assumption is that you can probably drop 400 on a PS4 Pro if you really want to enjoy 'all the tech'.

In answer to the question if Pro is worthwhile if you own a 1080p tv, that really depends on you. Down sampling will improve image quality dramatically, but you will not get the benefits of HDR as does not exist on non 4k tvs. Some games and potentially more if it becomes standard ( depends on Pro sales for 1080p customers) will have a 1080p mode where lots more detail will be added to the game.

I am buying a Pro but I have a 4k HDR, but I would even if I was still on 1080p. (have been down sampling PC to 1080p for a while and it looks loads better imo.

I've seen several posts/threads mentioning smoother/ more stable frame rate.

There was also that paragon image which clearly showed an upgrade that goes beyond just resolution.

So I think some games will definitely still offer some advantages even at 1080p

If buying a new PS4: Absolutely, the Slim isn't cheap enough comparatively, may as well get the Pro.

Selling/trading up: Maybe, for maybe 150 dollars to upgrade, you still get downsampling for better AA, you still get the "balls out visuals at 1080p" mode some devs are adding for Pro games, you still get more reliable frame rates in some games presumably, and some games added a 60fps at 1080p mode.

Heck, writing the above makes me want to sell my PS4 and get a Pro now.

That's why i preordered it. I play with a 1080p projector and on a 100 inch screen every effort to get a cleaner image is welcome. Every other improvement is a bonus but i'm certain a lot of gams will have more to offer in 1080p than just the downsampling.

I'm of the opinion the Pro will be a GREAT 1080p machine and an okay 4K machine

This is where I'm at too. I'm very tempted by the trade-in deals, but want to see how well supported the enhanced 1080p feature is before I pull the trigger. If there is a decent difference, I'm sure I'll end up picking one up.
