Trump is a white supremacist and hates minorities. He's like Robert E Lee or George Wallace in the modern world.

And the GOP has been white nationalist central since at least the mid to late 1960s.

The GOP has supported policies that hurt minorities but haven't explicitly appealed to white nationalism in decades. Say what you will about George W Bush, the guy did go out of his to attract black and hispanic voters back in 2004. More significantly he worked to defend Muslim Americans after 9/11. The exact opposite of what Trump has been doing.

The Southern Strategy was still in effect until at least the early 2000s. And that effort has laid the foundation we see today.

Not sure if you noticed, but the GOP has done everything possible to shit on Latinos recently. Also, that foundation has allowed the general base to be open to shitting on these people and more. See: Crap like the Tea Party, etc.

Nobody trusts GWB on minority progress.

I do think there was an intention from their campaign to appeal more broadly, regardless of republican doctrine. However there was no follow through in party policy.

They were always there and the GOP always turned a blind eye and used them. Trump is the takeover. The GOP played with racist fire for 50 years and it finally caught up to them.

Ted Cruz would not have talked about building a wall or banning all Muslims. He would not have said that black people live in a murderous hellscape or that we are being destroyed by wiley chinese traders. He would not have blamed muslims for not policing their own, he would not have called mexicans rapists and murderers. He wouldn't have said that america needs to be rebuild by american hands not foreign ones.

Cruz would have blown the same dogwhistles the GOP has used for decades. Trump is a fucking foghorn in comparison.

I disagree. However, I do agree with your overall point about the GOP. These mythical figures being held up as having decency have made a good living explicitly and implicitly going after minorities. That's part of the bread and butter of their livelihood. Can't say the same for Donald.

I was still in my early teens then, but I remember there being a huge hub bub about illegal immigration back in 2005/2006. Am I remembering wrong?

Democrats have been threatening to change America into a democratic nation for decades and the GOP and it's base are losing their minds. Minorities were never supposed to be considered equal to whites and certainly weren't supposed to be able to vote. When a black man was elected president, the gloves came off. They will subvert this country and it's institutions with greater frequency and ferocity in the years ahead.

No idea. I don't think he would do much of anything unless there was a sweep of the other branches similar to Hillary if she is elected. And you have the courts too standing in the way. We've seen in just the last 7 years how big of a deal the courts can be at all levels of gov't especially in this new era of obstruction.

Yup GOP in 2007 vowed to deny any possible progress at whatever cost even before Obama was sworn in. These were GOP congressional leaders vowing to ignore any of his advances no matter what.

Obama broke them.

This is further seen in progress regarding a SCOTUS nominee that was hopefully chosen to just highlight the destruction the GOP wishes upon the population. He's a moderate and the GOP is de-legitimizing the final year of a presidency (that the people selected in a near landslide) because they hate minorities that much.

They've already said they will block Hillary's SCOTUS nominee even if she wins. Again because they hate minorities and women.

It's really the same thing; the difference lies in that Trump makes it impossible to hide what's happening. And now that the white supremacists know their power, it forces the Republican establishment to either embrace them fully or to do something about it. I think that the Republican party is going to split from this, and that's really for the best.
