It doesn't even need to be that ridiculous. Just three things:
1) Young age
2) Charisma
3) Appealing to both minorities and the white majority (as in somehow finding a message for the lowerclass whites, unlike Clinton)
If they find someone like that (basically a young Sanders), the chances for 2020 are very high.

Living in Indiana you see the kind of bullshit that got Trump elected every day. My own cousin told me 5 years ago that if it was up to him, we'd set up machine gun turrets along the Mexican border and gun down every person trying to enter the US. Another cousin openly carries his firearm even at family gatherings and when asked to leave it in the other room to be curteous since there were many children around he pulled it out, waved it around a bit, and said he'd only be without his gun if he was dead.
My wife's parents are both hispanic and voted Trump because "Trump will bring back the jobs we lost to overseas". My mother voted Trump because of Bikers for Trump and the fact that her new husband is a biker.
I'm not surprised at the results of this election, but I am ashamed to live in an area so full of hate and ignorance.

The western democracies are getting closer and closer to the far-right policies during the inter war period. History repeats itself. I just hope we can go through this period quickly, and get a counter movement. I'm so sick and tired of all this racism, bigotism and nationalism. So... iPhones? All electronics, basically?
If so, isn't that going to completely fuck up the consumer economy in the US, at least in the short and mid term? I doubt companies will just swallow that themselves.
Or is there fine print on that kind of tariff?
If we wanted to be optimistic, Trump's rise could be seen as a reactive symptom to the very changes that might make a black woman president viable in the not too distant future. Such a candidate, if 'clean', could perhaps rebuild the coalition that got Obama elected. But maybe today is not the day for optimism.

I read the article and don't find it convincing but I agree, Hillary was an incredibly weak candidate. Even before the election, I thought she would have lost to virtually any GOP candidate in recent history but at least beat Trump. Oh well.

Honestly, it's increasingly likely both parties might go with puppets to act as salespeople for their camp. We know you don't need the experience, knowledge, dignity, etc. to be the leader of the country. I remember people (not just Jamie Foxx) talking about Jesse Williams starting a political career to run in a couple years. Same kinds of talk around Michelle Obama. We past all that now.
Give Tom Hanks a blank check and let him play his third or fifth more challenging role.
This is one of the few things I don't see getting through Congress. But, yeah, that tarriff would basically fuck consumer goods prices and murder the middle/lower classes.

It doesn't take much to become the president of the USA, huh? You don't even have to know much of anything. I guess it shouldn't be surprising that a nation of people where a great number are seemingly ignorant on many subjects that affect the world (according to polls on climate change for example) would choose an ignorant person as their leader. Hopefully it is not as bad as it seems or as people are saying. I wonder what it means for scientific progress, progress in going green, fighting climate change and human rights progress?
