I have this (borderline irrational) conviction that he, for some reason, will not become president. I am in denial, sure, but I have this weird gut feeling that he doesn't ultimately accept.

I don't know how much there is really to explain. While the president does have some direct authority to affect change through measures like executive orders, his role is not to pass legislation. When the house and senate are controlled by the opposition party for six of your 8 years, I'm not really sure what you expect. Bills have to be passed by Congress first before the president can sign them into law.
If the question is shifted to "why couldn't congress get anything done?", the answer becomes the filibuster and the power of the presidential veto. So at this juncture, both chambers of congress and the presidency being Republican controlled is a positive if your only metric of success is "did shit get done?" But if you care whether or not good shit is getting done, it obviously depends heavily on whether or not you're in favor of GOP/Trump policies.

He has given up the life of a carefree billionaire to go into the most stressful career in the world. Both of them have lost any semblance of freedom they once had and will now have the Secret Service following them wherever they go for the rest of their lives. No more going out to eat on a whim or taking the private jet to the Caribbean for a week or two. The President does not get that kind of freedom and cannot just up and travel whenever they feel like it. I do not think either of them are going to be able to adjust to what their lives are going to be like as President and First Lady.
Which given all the hate crimes that have risen up since Tuesday, they aren't exactly doing a good job representing it either.
I just got a thought related to Trump that made me smile for the first time in regards to this election: The thought of him or one of his insane potential staff members with a world leader like Angela Merkel. I mean, holy shit. She will wipe the floor with him so hard if Germany and the US are going to be at odds in a few areas. I just want to see him or Newt Gingrich debate her about wanting to quit their responsibilities regarding NATO, just as one example. She and Schäuble (minister of finances) do NOT fuck around on the international stage. Often I criticised that, for example in regards to how the people of Greece were treated. But man, am I looking forward to seeing these incompetent morons getting destroyed on the international stage. That theater bullshit of american politics does not fly on the international stage.

If Trump didn't have all that "pussy-grabbing/daughter is a piece of ass/she's a pig/make my dinner" stuff come out, he would have beaten Hillary by a huge margin. I think many people generally hate Hillary and her liberal platform, but voted for her solely because of Trump's past comments.
The only thing that kept it close was Trump's comments from the past. I don't think hardly anyone had a problem with any of his actual policies or anything he said about Muslims or Mexicans. And if he wasn't such a creep to people and women in the past, he would have rolled though this election.

It's gonna be shocking because 1) he didn't actually want the job, and 2) he and everyone around him was 100% sure that he was gonna lose. Running Trump TV would've been far, far, far easier (and way more profitable!)

I agree with your general sentiment but disagree with your conclusion. People are tired of the DNC and the establishment. Trump fed off of that. As you said, there were plenty of disgruntled Bernie fans that voted against Clinton. Doubt those supporters aren't some form of Liberal. I don't think Liberal America is dying, just the current state of the Democrats.

the prevailing theory for months has been that Trump is the worst possible candidate they could have chosen, is that still true in hindsight? would the others been able to win in a bigger way

this is just so fucking stupid.. she got absolutely clobbered in the electoral college and the experts are starting to say that Trump might win the popular vote as well but no lets just rig it after the fact and possibly lead our country into a civil war.

In most cases, I would say that an elector should do what rules say. We agreed to them, after all, even if their not perfect.
Furthermore, this would have an unprecedented impact on our democracy and it would forever cast a shadow under the legitimacy of Clinton's hold.
And anyway, the Republicans hold the Senate and the house. We'd be getting 4 more years of gridlock except now they would have a legitimate reason to pull shit like refusing to accept Clinton's nominations for the Supreme Court.
But this is the godzilla threshold. There is nothing that could be more damaging to America than a Trump presidency. So I would support it.

I mean, the guy's spot on. It's been 20-30 years of fear mongering bullshit towards Conservatives, and what'd Conservatives do? Okay, here's a guy you say he is, but it never fucking sticks except for one comment and if it didn't, the race would've been a blowout on all sides (and EC wise, was, to the media's surprise).
This one thing, this one talking point about telling Conservatives they're fucking evil is probably what's halted progress more than anything in this country, and divided us more than anything else. We don't talk to people anymore. One side yells until the other gets frustrated and walks away.
