At the very least im interested in seeing how the presidency ages him. It takes a toll on everyone. Can only imagine what Trump comes out looking like after 4 years.

Bernie will be too old by then, let him retire nicely with all the young people's money he's accumulated over his campaign.

For you.
you think really in black and white if you believe all those who vote republican are all redneck racists
They arent. But they are fine with them . They are fine with racism. With bigotry. With homophobia. They are fucking fine with their hesds of state displaying extreme ammounts of the above. They are fine with the policies that come with all those.

Fuck
That
Noise

They would vote for Hitler if he came to them with vague phrases about economy and jobs.

Those are not the people you want to get. You want cater and campaign to people that didn't vote and lost their trust in the system. Look at the fucking election results and compare them to 2012. People didn't shift from Democrat to Republican. The people you,re talking about didn't have a effect. Low turnout did.
The "economy" people will always go republican, no matter what. These are people willing to fuck over anyone else for their personal gain. They will never go democrat, reaching to them is useless, and if try to cater to them you will violate fundamental democrat values , alienate liberals and fuck the party even more.

Nicola Sturgeon 'will not be silent' over Donald Trump

Scotland's first minister has vowed not to maintain a "diplomatic silence" in the face of any racism, misogyny or intolerance from Donald Trump.

Nicola Sturgeon released a statement congratulating Mr Trump after his surprise victory in the US election.

But speaking at First Minister's Questions the following day, she made clear that she stood by her previous criticisms of his campaign.

Ms Sturgeon had backed Hillary Clinton ahead of the presidential election.

The first minister told MSPs she had faced criticism for breaking the convention that political leaders do not comment on election campaigns in other countries.

But she said many of Mr Trump's comments during the campaign had been "deeply abhorrent".

She said: "I never want to be, I am not prepared to be, a politician that maintains a diplomatic silence in the face of attitudes of racism, sexism, misogyny or intolerance of any kind.

"I hope that president-elect Trump turns out to be a president very different to the kind of candidate he was and reaches out to those who felt vilified by his campaign.

"But people of progressive opinion the world over, I think, do have to stand up for the values of tolerance and respect for diversity and difference."

Ms Sturgeon added that she wanted to "engage positively and constructively with the American administration", but would "never shy away from standing up for these important principles".

I don't think this is big enough to get it's own topic, so I'll dump it here. Proud of my countries leader for not backing down over telling Trump his shit stinks.

this whole thing has pretty much just destroyed me this week. Ive been on decline each day. Each new announcement is just as bad and unbelievable as the last. I finally snapped and went apeshit at lunch today at a guy saying the protestors are dumb as fuck and dont like democracy when it doesnt go their way. Like i got really angry and was almost ready to fight, the other person didnt really back down either. i might as well blow me brains out i cant enjoy anything anymore. our only hope now are people like Warren and Moore and others who are actually getting very vocal about organizing

as a brit who's gone through similar over the last year or so, it'll get better. Shit will make you angry, and it should, but it won't be so pervasive.

She doesn't expect to ever have to negotiate with him so why shouldn't she.

Actually there is still on-going issues in Scotland with Trump and his golf course.

Trump resumes fight against windfarm near Scottish golf course

Now that America realises how awful he will be for climate change, he's currently fighting Scotland on our renewable energy progression because of his fucking golf course.

Not to mention there's the point stated in that first article

The first minister told MSPs she had faced criticism for breaking the convention that political leaders do not comment on election campaigns in other countries.

I want to know what are the chances Trump takes care of those rural Americans who voted for him?

What is funny is now that the election of done, investigators are now delving into what it would take to deliver on things like bringing coal back, clean coal, deportation, the wall. Well you will be surprised to find out that such things are impractical to the point of no effectiveness or overly expensive. I know im shocked too.

Let the new phase of mental gymnastics begin.

He wants to expand coal and natural gas. You know the two things that are in fierce competition with each other.

Bill Maher right now is light as all fuck. He was doom and gloom and we are gonna die last week and today he is laughing and inviting Trump on his show. He is even criticizing the current protests. Whats weird about this is i think it is actually a really smart move because his audience was a powder keg. He is trying to appeal to Trump's lighter side and try and prevent catastrophe. And oddly enough this whole thing is making me feel better. Did not expect this at all.

So business as usual. They're going to be in for a rude awakening once they realize that he's just like all those politicians that they hate so much.

I unfortunately received a brief ban right before the election day, so I haven't been able to participate in the discussion (I have been lurking though).

But sweet baby Jebus, what have you done America? What's wrong with you? How DUMB are you? How do the vast majority of people who voted for this guy not get that he'll make their lives WORSE?! Everyone I know here in Sweden (and basically every politician, everyone on TV, everyone except some right-wing extremists) are just shocked and deeply saddened that you would decide to go this way.

I'm afraid. For all sensible people in America who didn't want this fascist bigot as their president. For the minorities he (and evidently a very large part of the US population) hates. For the security over here in the Baltic Sea, and really the entire world, now that America can no longer be seen as a reliable ally to the rest of the western democratic world. It really does feel like Europe now stands alone. For this person having the nuclear codes. For the environment. The Earth is fucked. For the first time in my life (I'm 31) I'm TRULY worried about the future of humanity and the planet. So thanks, America. Thanks, Americans. You fucked it up for all of us.

Welcome back. Yeah it's hard to gauge how the rest of the world sees this right now. We're all so focused on the domestic consequences at the moment. But yes, I worry about the global implications as well. All of Trump's isolationist talk about pulling US military bases from around the world and letting allied counties defense themselves is very, very concerning.

My heart broke for every minority in this country as it was a huge awakening that half of the country doesn't care about our rights. And at the very best, they voted for and elected a man who doesn't.

I won't pretend to understand what you're going through since I'm neither an american nor a minority. I think I have something to contribute in this discussion because I want to adress your point about half the country not caring about your rights.

Simply put, I don't believe that half of the US population is racist or that it doesn't care about minority rights. I believe that in most reasonably modern countries most people are supportive of minority rights. However, most people vote based on their personal interests first.

Trump pandered to a group of voters that were feeling completely left out by the political establishment. Many of those voters were desperate. When your own livelihood is at stake you will not put the interests of other people above your own. I wouldn't and you wouldn't either. You voted based on which candidate better represented your interests, others did the same.

Part of Trump's audience is undoubtedly made up of racists, gamergaters or just plain stupid people. The overwhelming majority of the people who voted for Trump didn't do it because they hate you or because they want you to suffer. They voted for him because, as vile and disgusting as he can be, he was the only one that directly adressed their concerns and gave them hope that something might change in their lives for the better.

Dismissing every Trump supporter as a racist, homophobic, fascist scumbag is a surefire way of driving a wedge between the american people and cementing an "us verus them" mentality. You don't need to coddle the racists or the homophobes or the scumbags, they are most likely too far gone. Everybody else, regardless if they vote right or left, belong to the same team and should look at each other with empathy and establish a meaningful dialog. Help others understands your plight, listen to others explaining theirs.

I've said it in other threads (maybe this one?), but a vote doesnt discriminate. Your intent may be to better your life, you may not believe in those racist sexist ideals, you may not want minorites to suffer, but your vote doesn't hold such nuance. It supports all the aspects of the candidate. Your vote is basically saying even if you dont believe in the bad racist/sexist/xenophobic aspects, you're okay with them being validated and supported if the good benefits you

Is there evidence that supports this narrative that is being spread around now that Trump won not because of racism etc., or people finding those things acceptable if it means they personally gain or it doesn't affect them, but rather because a major block of his voters were just 'desperate' and 'scared' or 'left behind'.

Was it not found that Trump voters actually tended to have HIGHER incomes than Hillary's supporters? That doesn't strike me as an indication of desperation...

When you vote, you vote for everything the candidate stands off. You can't just select whatever you like and ignore the bad stuff.

So when you vote Trump, even if you're not racist, you're sending an OK message towards his racist/sexist views.

I agree on this but I think both sides think the same way.

True, in a way. You're sending a message that you are willing to overlook his terrible views because other parts of his policies might have a positive effect on your life. It's selfish but it's human nature.

Maher is taking exactly the wrong approach. Feeling optimistic is fine for making you feel good, not so effective for what is actually necessary right now.
