KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

Guys this is a bit off topic but seeing as there are so many KS 8000 owners here, here are 2 pics from my KS 8500 (curved model).

There's some light bleed when there is white image on screen. Cant see it in this pic but in 21:9 movies when black bars appear on top and bottom, the bottom left side shows quite a bit of bleed. It's not so noticeable when the lights are lit or during daytime at all, but very annoying when I watch movies in darkness.

And one damn stuck green pixel.

Do these seem like excessive problems? Samsung service/ warranty here is pretty damn slow so if the backlight bleed is a common problem, I can live with it and the stuck pixel (which is usually not so noticeable).

How do i get this screnn to show up so i can test light bleed and dead pixels.

Finally bit the bullet and joined the KS8000 crew after comparing against the 850D in person. Almost went Sony due to the viewing angle but managed to snag Samsung EPP pricing on a 60" which was too good to pass up.

Now's the hard part, waiting for it to arrive. Can't wait to take advantage of this thread.

If the pixel won't unstick, return. No reason to keep one with any stuck.

But with these TV's, there is a sweet spot. If you're not in it, you will see the led edge light bleed in effect. This goes for ALL ks series that I know of. This album sort of shows the effects that happens by just being a little out of it.

1st one is perfect, and next show what happens out side of that. It's a lot more pronounced when you are farther from the spot. But you want to sit with eyes around center mass of TV to about 6 inches lower. Go too high or low, and you will see the light bleed.

So if it looks like a lot of bleed when your standing or sitting where you normally wouldn't, thats normal. These TV's are made with having a setup around it's sweet spot. They're the focus lol.

As others have stated, without being on high for dynamic contrast it seems like lower gradient values for greys seem to be more washed out (But over saturates and crushes blacks). Outside that range everything else seems fairly accurate, but that's kind of off putting. Especially when I have a calibrated IPS monitor I'm using in addition that is displaying that black range better.

Funny you mention the sweet spot, was just sitting off center tonight, and for the first time since owning the set for about a week, I noticed the bleed and/or bloom in some corners that I never noticed before.

Was kind of annoyed as I never had that with my Vizio P65 (for obvious FALD reasons), but I'll just have to get over it.

I got the image from RTings.com from Black Uniformity test. And this review of the KS 8500 will show you what the image should look like, clearly my clouding/ backlight bleed is fairly high.

I'm sitting pretty much around the centre, the table on which it's kept was bought after the sofa, to make sure viewing height was near perfect. I notice you have a backlight setup which would ensure your contrasts pop out more when viewing from a distance, good call. I have a similar setup, but two lamps near the TV.

It seems the general opinion is to get it repaired for the pixel alone, while the light bleed seems on par for this set.

Yeah it does have some issues when you're off centre, but luckily for me, my man cave is set up for me to be in the centre, and when my wife and I watch should couldn't care less about light bleed and what not. Hopefully it is the same scenario for you where you get the sweet spot at all times.

Is it normal to only get YCbCr420 and 8 bit color depth with the KS8000 when connected to the PC? I have a GeForce 980 Ti.

I just keep it on RGB 4:4:4 8 bit. I don't seem to have a 10 bit option no matter what I do. If I drop to 1920*1080p I get 8 and 12 bit options but still no 10.

Games still look pretty great (Especially ones I can run at native 4k 60hz on my PC), took a lot of tweaking. But I have it at a place I like now.

Getting ready for Deathwing!

So with 4K resolution you still get the option to choose between RGB and YCbCr420? I just installed a new active cable to get 4K working as I need a 15m cable to reach the TV from the next room where my computer is. My previous cable of similar length would not work beyond 1080p.

If I drop refresh rate to 4K@30 Hz I get RGB and 422 options. If I turn HDMI UHD Color option on for the input I lose picture no matter what refresh rate is being used.

Yea, I have a Monoprice slim "Redmere" "Active" 18Gbps cable that's 10 feet. (I just bought it because it was like $10, fairly long, really thing and had heard good things back in 2015 when I bought my Vizio 2015 P series and needed a cable to carry 1080p@120hz.

This is what I get in Nvidia Control panel. Running through a GTX 1070.

Also in that picture I have Dynamic contrast on, I have since been playing around more and I am convert to Dynamic Contrast off for games. It just looks right and you don't lose any details.

Thanks, I think I need to try it with a shorter cable to see if that fixes the issue. Mine is also supposed to be a Redmere chip active cable with all the premium inner workings crap. I just measured and seems that I could get away with just a 10m cable as the Samsung One Connect box gives a bit more leeway in placement.

Anyone having issues with especially noticeable motion judder in 30fps games (In game mode with no effects on)? I don't remember 30 fps games having this much judder on my previous TV.

Aren't you getting crushed blacks with Ouput Dynamic Range set to Full?

No. I did all the clipping tests. I have the TV set to Black level normal and its all good.

does this apply to the KS7000? i just bought one.
(i'm in europe btw, so its KS7000 in Europe and probably a different in US)

Same TV as the KS8000. Does what apply?

Yeah, you'll have to buy a new OneConnect box which will run you about $400 but it's cheaper than getting a new TV.

How in the wolrd did you conclude from that video you'd need a new OneConnect box? He just said a firmware update to upgrade all current 2016 SUHD televisions to accept Metadata. The entire One Connect box is a propietary device and I don't doubt Samsung with all that it's invested in the metadata tech and its royalty free push will not be able to do so.

oh so its the same?

and i meant this apply.. the settings that are perfect for gaming these people are posting.

i dont have the TV yet (on its way)

can't wait. :D

Look I'm very much in the camp that if we are paying this amount of money for something, it should be as close to perfect as possible. But recommending to them that they should return it for 1 stuck pixel seems to be a bit extreme. Especially on a 4K TV. No way he can see the stuck pixel from normal viewing distance.

Getting into the return lottery, especially with TVs, is a hassle.

Just my two cents!

Going to plug and set my tv up today.

I dont know anything about light bleeding (dont even understand this).

Also not sure how to check dead pixels...

Can anyone help?

well, i returned my KS7000 (EU version) because of a single hot pixel, i could not live with it :(

I'm also looking at importing it from the US so I'd like to be sure of some things. I'm a little concerned about judder during panning in scenes, and apparently part of the back bezel can come apart from it being glued instead of having screws. Are either of those things prevalent or fixable ? That sounds bad.

Also, in looking at a couple videos, why does it seem like some options are always greyed out like hdmi black level or film mode etc ? My current old samsung does that too and when turned to game mode, has a horrendous picture quality and then everything gets greyed out so you can't change individual values once it's enabled. You can mess with saturation/white balance/contrast etc with HDR on and game mode on right, or does it lock in settings and stop you from messing with anything ?

Oh, and is there any way to know which panel you have between the FA01 and AA02 and which is better ? Stores and listings always say (2016) model, so is there a 2015 model of this same TV that I should be making sure I avoid ?

I notice the judder in tv stuff yep.

I might try and use some of the SOE custom stuff to fix it.

I mainly use my tv for games so I'll live.

Na, Not in these times. Stuck pixels is out of the norm. Sets are basically perfect now, and no one should accept the defects.

You shouldn't have light bleed in your sweet spot. You shouldn't have any stuck/dead pixels.

Yeah my tv looks perfect aside from when a white logo appears on a black screen it lights up around it but I believe that's just the nature if the tech

So I want someone to pretend like im 5 years old and show me what Im supposed to be seeing with HDR.

Using the witness, show me a spot to look at, what I should be looking for, and what my tV settings should be at, I have a Samsung KS8000 and am able to toggle hdr on and off but im not seeing a noticable effect.

I wish there was a toggle mode for Infamous First light because in that game the headlights on the cars impress me the most , but i dont know if its just the 4K impressing me or if its the HDR effect

These sets have a problem with interlaced scanned images. On any cable set up, whether you have Direct TV, Comcast, TimeWarner/Spectrum, whatever... If the signal isn't 1080p and there is a lot of compression, these sets cause a judder/pause effect with any type of Motion Plus setting.

You won't get this in streams from Youtube, or from Amazon or Netflix. It's only been replicated, and by everyone, on Cable TV sources.

So for Cable TV watching, disable Auto Motion features completely to resolve the issue.

HDR is hard to explain properly, and even harder to show unless you came to my house :P

A lot of people expect a POP, or for everything to just shine and look vibrant... Wrong.

HDR is about expanding the color range, so that the image looks more realistic and natural. To some, this will look "washed out" some times, because they are expecting more of a pop. But, HDR does make brighter parts of the picture brighter, but does so without oversaturating or blooming out colors. And same with blacks, as it will give you deeper and darker blacks, but at the same time, allow you to see more detail in those shades than before.

The picture won't be some neon sign... It's more like a window in your house, and you are just watching everything from it.... It should look more realistic and natural. But with games, well, that's hard to tell because they aren't natural and are normally made to not look realistic.

Because dynamic metadeta requires HDMI 2.1 and we don't know if HDMI 2.0a can be updated via firmware to support that.
