KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

So isn't the backlight supposed to automatically adjust when watching hdr on netflix? Started marco polo season 3 and it doesn't. So i don't think hdr is working with it.
If you are on an input with game mode on and then turn on Netflix, it will be running with the game mode settings, which means it won't switch to HDR settings with HDR content. Switch to a non game mode input before starting Netflix.

Presumably it's better to output PCM out of the PS4 through ARC and then let the receiver deal with it, rather than output DTS or Dolby Digital from the PS4?

Now correct me if I am wrong, but I believe ARC will only pass 2.0 PCM and or bitstreamed 5.1 Dolby Digital/DTS.

I don't think it is fixable.

Now that I've highlighted the issue there are loads of others who have the same.

I believe it is due to the poor bitrate / codec being used.

I noticed this a bit while testing and actually emailed the dev today to ask. I was wondering the same thing.

Keeping my HDMI Black level on Auto. Normal looks awful. Everything looks super saturated.

I also think HDMI Black Level = Normal is awful, but for a different reason. In both Rise of the Tomb Raider and COD:IW, Normal totally washed out the image, removed a lot of color and made everything feel very pale. The stark contrast of deep blacks and vibrant colors in Low looked so much better. Thankfully, "Auto" seems to be set to Low most of the time.

Thought that was gonna fix it. Didn't unfortunately

Then the settings on that input are screwed up (maybe you changed it earlier at some point?). It's not necessarily that it goes to backlight max, but it keeps settings for HDR and non HDR content. So just turn it up to 20 on HDR content. It should stay at the lower setting for non HDR content.

Guess ill reset my settings to default and go from there. If I'm not getting hdr then I'm missing out on the reason i spent the money for this.

If they reply it would be great if you could post their response.

Having looked closely at this TV with various sources I do believe it struggles to transition between dark and light colours. The banding can be very bad at times and very slight at others.

A bit disappointing considering it's a premium UHD model.

I get exactly the same. The banding appears when it's minimised. Do you not get that effect when loading up Forza? Assuming you have it of course. It's worst when the Microsoft / Turn 10 splash screen appears.

Nah sorry I don't have it yet.

It will look washed out if you didn't set RGB range to full on PS4. Both have to be the same.

Got a KS8000 and still confused as to how to view HDR content. If I pop in Uncharted 4 for instance, so I need to go to HDR+ mode? And then I read something about having to adjust your brightness after that? Really lost here.

It has nothing to do with the tv and is related to the video source/content.

It does an astounding job at gradient tests as well as close to besting any other TV at DCI P3 color reproduction (and obviously rec.709 since that has an even lower requirement).

This whole Forza thing is an example of the above. That is always how it looks. I see the same thing on Forza Apex as I do on Horizon. I see the same thing on my PC as I do on the XBOX. This is on two other TV's outside of the KS8000 (mine hasn't been delivered yet).

- You must have HDMI UHD Color mode on for the HDMI port your PS4 is connected to. Failure to do this will leave HDR mode turned off and options for it greyed out.
- HDR + is essentially nothing more than artificial changing of settings to simulate HDR. Its garbage and nothing more than a bullet point "feature". Never turn it on
- When you load a game it should ask you if you want to enable HDR. If for some reason it doesn't then you can enable it in the options. PS4 HDR games are enabled game by game in this manner.
- If you are in movie mode or any other mode, settings will automatically adjust between two profiles one for HDR and one for non-HDR content. Follow the ones in the OP. If you are in game mode settings will NOT automatically adjust and you will need to manually set the brightness to 20 among other things. Brightness of non-HDR content should be around 4-10 depending on ambient light conditions in your home. For any further info read the OP.

No ignore that HDR+ option.

Simply go to expert settings and click on HDMI UHD Color and turn ON the port you're using for PS4. This enables true HDR. When playing an HDR game you'll be notified.

EDIT. Beat by the ninja above.

EDIT: Oh and go into your PS4 video settings and make sure it can detect HDR for your TV.

you're not perhaps trying to play HDR netflix on the PS4 Pro or PS4 by chance are you? I don't think it does HDR yet but it does do 4k output.

BTW

Mad Max FR and The Martian are only $20 for the 4k versions atm on amazon

Same reason. Washed out is definitely a better description for what I'm seeing than the 'saturated" I used. RGB set to full and everything. Colors look fantastic on auto.

I've heard that the larger models have two different positions for the legs, with one of them being closer together.

Was wondering if anyone has the width between the legs on the 60 inch model, when they're in the closer position. I've only been able to find it for the 65 model, which is 39 inches, I think.

If its HDR content, it should show the HDR banner in the top left... if its not showing that, then you aren't watching something that is HDR... If you're watching netflix you need to make sure you have the subscription that supports 4k.

Sounds like you're just used to crushed blacks.

TBH, that's not impossible. But I feel like the difference goes beyond that. The vibrancy of colors in Low feels more lifelike and realistic than the dull paleness of Normal. I do wonder why Auto defaults to Low the majority of the time.

I'll test some more, but I can't see myself ever playing on Normal. There's no situation I've yet seen where it didn't make the picture significantly worse. But I won't stubbornly refuse to give it another shot.

Brightness should be "Backlight", for newcomers reading.

In game mode, black level should be automatic.

I haven't seen Netflix give any indication that HDR content is actually playing in HDR mode. I don't get any sort of notice. Amazon makes it pretty obvious, but is there a way to know for sure with Netflix, other than your settings changing (i.e. backlight to 20)?

I got the 60" because the 55" legs weren't adjustable. It fit on my TV stand which is about 43" wide so I think the legs were in the 42" range.

I did end up returning both 60s I bought because of light bleed on the bottom left which was really annoying. I really wish I never sold my 4k Sony 810 to try and get on the HDR bandwagon. That model had an excellent picture, was great for gaming and had PS Vue built in.

Mine's on the bottom right, but damn. I guess this is a really common problem for the 60". Sent a repair request to Samsung and got a ticket. It's a pain. but "repaired" TVs tend to be pretty perfect. I just hope they don't take too long.

We've been happily using our Sony Bravia KDL46XBR2 for 10 years. We paid $4500(!) for it back then--which we knew was outrageous--but at the time that's what they cost, we were moving into the 1080P era, and we wanted something made to last, and so it has.

However, recently a close family member got a PS4 Pro and a 65 inch KS8000 (for $1800 2 months ago) and I swooned over it's image quality, ease of use and thin profile. Much to the chagrin of my wife I began to heavily consider a 4K TV + PS4 Pro, and so I began reading through threads like this.

A few days ago pricing recently began to drop and once the 55inch hit $1000 on Amazon I jumped. I loaded everything I needed into the cart and sat at the checkout screen for, like, 15 minutes haha. I jumped back to a few KS8000 threads for reassurance--because, frankly, I was sweating at spending that much more no matter how good the deal--and I saw one post exclaiming Best Buy had matched Amazon pricing.

I couldn't believe it because there's a BB 4 blocks from my house. I mean, if I have a defective panel I would much rather drive to the store than pay the shipping for a return/exchange, plus I could have it THAT day! :)

Anywho, ran to BB and sure enough all the KS8000's were marked down. I ended up with a 65inch KS8000 for $1499! I got home, removed + cleaned up the old TV and installed the KS8000 and we absolutely LOVE it. (keep in mind we came from a 10 year old TV that had zero networking capability and no apps)

It's AMAZING!

It's not just the image quality, but the painless setup process, super-easy firmware updates, Apps that actually work well (like Netflix, Amazon Video and YT), the remote is well designed and just works with everything we need it to, the sound quality is fantastic. I mean, the remote paired with everything including out Frontier TV box and now we no longer need our Harmony (which served us well for years!).

So, thanks GAF. Thanks Haines for not only starting this thread but remaining active in it. It's contributions like these that make a healthy community, and a lot of us appreciate it without sometimes saying it. I don't think we spread out enough love and appreciation at times and here it's certainly deserved.

Edit question: To enable HDR mode while in Gaming Mode, one must simply enable Game Mode (and not just enable HDR mode, because then Game Mode is greyed out) and with just Game Mode enabled it will auto-detect HDR content? Please tell me this is true.

Well technically mine was on the bottom right since it was above the right leg but when I look at the TV it was on the bottom left. Was yours on the bottom left to if you are looking at the screen? I looked at the store model and it had the same light bleed. I even made sure the 2nd 60 I got was from a different batch.

Someone in this thread said the 60's don't have Samsung panels.

I see a lot of confused people. Please check out the very first post for settings help. I have my settings written there and they should work perfect for you. I would put it in a nice format and paste it everytime someones lost but i dont have the time.

Is xbox 1 supposed to be on 8bit color depth or 10 for 4khdr. 8it auto set it to 8. I think 10 is just for pc right?

Here is the settings needed found in the first post. For anyone confused about dyna,ic contrast. Yes we tried every setting. No, you dont want it on.

Here are my final settings for this tv. I will try to add notes, and talking points. I am just a casual gamer and this is simply done from reading on here, my own eye sight and using the wow disney disc

This is on the aaou 55 inch panel. Diff panels could take diff settings!

For gaming, movies and netflix

Picture mode : movie, special viewing mode game

Go to expert settings
I use backlight anywhere from 5 at night to 10 during day. My tv is beside a sunny window in the morning.
I leave brightness at 45
Contrast at 100. My calibration seemed like it wanted it even higher so def max this out imo
Sharpness at 0 from what ive read any sharpness is bad.
Color at 53 My setup wanted those 3 extra notches. May vary by panel
Tint g52r48 again, very small difference from default and may be panel specific
Smart led high. Im not sure on this one. Ive seen it reccomended being on high for hdr so im just going to det it and forget it
Make sure hdmi uhd color is turned on for your input
Hdmi black level auto. I trust the auto setting. Hopefully the tech does what it should
Dynamic contrast off. This should be off imo. If you want it on, go for it, your tv
Color tone warm 1 (xbox calibration reccomend this and I agree)
Gamma 0
Color space auto

Hdr for gaming!
This is bugged, you will have to manually up the backlight to 20 for hdr game content in gaming mode and back to 5-10 when you are done. Hopefully we get a fix soon
Set dynamic contrast to off.
If you want 4k hdr streaming on netflix you will need to use the tv app until the ps4 one gets an update.
For this i change my source from console to tv, movie mode, with gaming turned off. This way the tv will change the backlight for hdr on its own. If you go to settings, backlight you will see it will be jacked up to 20.
If you switch to a normal sdr show, it will auto put it back to your normal backlight setting
You will not get a notification like in gaming for hdr content
For this i used marco polo.
Dynamic contrast off.

I use warm2 for movie mode as it's the industry standard for film etc
You tv should switch between settings on its own between hdr and sdr content when in normal movie mode.
Do not forget that hdr mode will need its settings set, it wont take the settings from your other modes. So tune it accordingly. I also use the same color And tint settings on my movie mode
I leave digital clean view and auto motion plus off in movie mode. You can use digital clean view for clean looking 720p content if you wish

My tv sound is on audio out/optical with bitsream and dolby digital for my logitech 5.1 pc surround i use
Ps4 audio is hdmi out, bitstream digital
Than optical from tv to surround.hdmi from ps4 to tv

My ps4 settings are all set to auto.

Do not forget to use in game brightness slider. These were done on default setting in Uncharted 4
Please feel free to correct me where im wrong or tell me what settings you find best

I have it on HIGH btw.
It's the only way that HDR works for that game.

Prepare to be blown away.

What is everyone's solution with this TV for retro consoles that don't have HDMI? Also has anyone daisy chained HDMI switches withe the oneconnect to see how well it handles it?

Set it to YUV, it will always be the correct black level then and you will benefit from 17ms less input lag.

Oh, are the legs labeled like "director's left and right"? I have mine mounted on a stand. Looking at it, the bleed is from the bottom right corner, and extends along the bottom edge to maybe a little less than a 3rd of the way across the screen.

Customer support's not being very helpful. They've sent me the same list of "check my settings" multiple times. I just want to take my TV to a supported repair center already. They're gonna drag this out though it seems.

The leg labeled right was right if you are looking at the back of the TV.

I might have kept my 2nd one but I did a Youtube white screen test and the left part of the screen was all yellow. That is some poor quality control.

Fellow KS8000 owners, do we actually know what the recent firmware 1150 did?

On my set (KS7090, Germany's equivalent model # of the US KS8000), the Youtube app still does not support HDR videos and game mode still does not come with its own set of HDR settings just like every other picture mode.

how does it look in normal viewing, like movies, games, and tv shows?

Also noticed pretty bad color banding in some game UI, but I can't tell if it's the game or the TV. I'm leaning towards game since I don't notice it at all during gameplay. In Rise of the Tomb Raider, when you find documents, the screen that pops up has a green to black fade from the bottom to top of the screen that's really badly banded. Noticed it in some World of Final Fantasy UI too.
