Oh man at this. Something about Greg's voice always gets to me. So genuine. https://youtu.be/UtM6d2fpeso

I knew to expect sad moments from this episode, but Greg
looking at the picture of Vidalia, Yellowtail, and Sour Cream as a happy family while he's all alone with Steven
is something else.

I look forward to getting my emotions gut-punched tonight, even if there will also be some "Gems have no idea how to take care of a baby" shenanigans.

Yall crazy, that was great.

Not just about not knowing how to take care of a baby, but the stuff about grieving for Rose and accepting Steven for who he was, not Rose.

I watched twice.

Pretty great stealth Christmas episode.

The crewinverse continues to be a tease on what would happen to Steven if his Gem was ripped out. On one hand, it'd be hilariously stupid if Rose could have coexisted along with Steven (without his powers, obviously) just by pulling out his Gem to reveal a normal belly button. On the other hand, a horrific, literal soul-shattering injury is probably the most likely possibility and therefore won't be shown directly ever.

I might be in the minority, but this was the weakest episode we have had in a while.

I always felt the implication was that steven was pretty much a gem powered flesh golem which means he'd die if it's ripped from his belly. Rose'd totally return then tho.

I mean, I think Steven still has all of the necessary biology to survive as a standalone human, but the main thing is that he doesn't seem to eat that much (moreso in later seasons) or get vaccinations / regular checkups, so without his Gem to provide regulatory functions like that he'd probably just get really sick at first until he started to develop a diet like a normal human.

Consider also: I think Steven may have actually imparted some low-level Gem functions (like being able to fuse) onto Connie when he healed her eyes in An Indirect Kiss, so I don't know that a gem is actually required to retain certain elements of the power set. If Steven's over 90% water which is all imbued with ridiculously OP healing powers (or at least the bodily fluids produced while he had the gem), I think he'd probably survive.

When you think about it, that also explains Steven's ridiculous durability despite being a human - he's constantly healing himself as long as his emotions allow it.

Ya'll remember when the three wise-men stole Jesus cause they all have weird feelings about God dying?

I think overall as an episode, it didn't add much to what we could already infer. But it doesn't make it bad

Christ, Greg, at least buy a trailer

This should have been the half hour episode and Gem Harvest should have been the short episode.

Also I was thinking how easy it would be to turn Rose into a villain by making it so that she knew about Yellow Diamond and Home world's return thru Garnet and decided to lay low by creating Steven knowing she would eventually return once his Gem was removed.... But that sounds like fanfiction

It's really too little information to go off of to say at this point. There was that "Rose couldn't have known" line in Keeping It Together, though.

so yeah, that wasn't a particularly good episode. It was a bit weird how they kept switching between the styles of baby Steven's eyes

I thought Three Gems and a baby was a pretty decent episode. I'm always game for a flashback episode, and this one had a lot more going for it, that it made enjoyable for me. I agree that there wasn't much in terms of story, but even a lesser Steven Universe epiosde has some good qualities about it. Greg seriously needs to get a job though. Does that man ever work? Heh!

That might have been an animation error on the animators part, or maybe it was something they did intentional, in order to make Steven seem "unique", probably the first of those though. Also it couldn't have been easy to constantly have to redraw baby Steven's little eyes, so I could see why there would be a bit of an animation error with it.

it looked intentional to me, iirc they only gave him normal eyes in close-up shots otherwise they used the dot eyes. I was just a weird stylistic choice

I know you're joking, but aside from being a millionaire, he also owns the town's car wash and is it's only employee. Can't claim that he's a workless, homeless bum. LOL.

But I agree. I do enjoy the Greg-focused flashback episodes, as it's interesting to see what he was like during that period of his life. It's still hard to figure out exactly how old he was during that point. Heck, we still don't know why he has that permanent tan.

I wonder if we'll ever get an Eyeball-Greg interaction where she points out his tan.

Also, speaking of Gem-human interaction (which I think may be one of the subjects of this season like fusion was for season 2), I feel like Andy and Jasper may be able to help one another out considering their personalities are somewhat similar.

Yeah, the weird thing about Greg's tan, is that it's a permanent one. It's always that pink hue, and in one of the flashbacks, he had a similar skin tone to that of Steven, so it's safe to assume the burn is pretty recent.

I generally wonder if Eyeball, Jasper, and Bismuth will return to the show, especially with Bismuth and Eyeball's arc have respectively concluded. I do want to see how Jasper & Amethyst bounce off between one-another, as Jasper only sees her as an inferior version of herself.

Eyeball has the least likely chance of coming back. She was thrown into space with next to no hope of being rescued. It's supposed to be the closest Steven has come to ever killing someone. Poofing Bismuth may seem like that, but he understands that poofing is temporary and even bubbles Bismuth. The whole point of Bubbled was that Steven learned about his mom killing Pink Diamond in the episode before and then he's put into a situation where he is also forced to do something terrible in order to save his life. Now he has an understanding of why his mom may have done some of the less wholesome things that she did. Eyeball is basically Steven's Pink Diamond: someone he tried to help/reason with but was forced to kill. As much as I love the Rubies, I think they're done from a story perspective.
Can we at least get Leggy and Navy back though?

Bismuth will probably return, seeing as she's bubbled away with the rest of the Gems. But her role in the story is self-contained within her episode, and it would be extremely hard to live up to it. A possible idea would be Bismuth seeming to change her ways, only for Lapis to meet her and reveal that Bismuth is the one who poofed her. That's a guaranteed recipe for drama that can go in many directions. They wouldn't have made Bismuth so easy to identify in Lapis' flashback if they weren't going to pick up that storyline later.

Jasper has to come back, maybe even this season. They're still exploring how to heal corrupted gems, and Amethyst now has some sympathy for her "sis". She's been featured alongside the main cast in promotional materials, so there is no way her role in the series is over. Whether she ends up helping the Crystal Gems near the end of the series or "joins" them earlier remains to be seen. I definitely hope it's the latter, since it would be interesting to see Steven, Amethyst, and maybe even Peridot try to give Jasper a chance, while Garnet, maybe Pearl, and especially Lapis are completely against it. A team-splitting argument like that could be a decent storyline for several episodes, similar to how they did the Sardonyx arc.

I like the attention to detail with Pearl being the most depressed of the three since Rose only just recently left at that point in time and baby Steven's lack of object permanence.

Also, jeez, Pearl, you were almost willing to disembowel that baby.

There's no reason for Eyeball to return until they've found a definitive cure for gem corruption. They might need Jasper for interrogation at some point if they use Steven's spit to turn her back temporarily, and Bismuth might return to team up with Peridot and build a thing. I don't know if Jasper and Amethyst will have the same type of banter since Amethyst was able to make progress on her inferiority complex and Jasper doesn't really seem to care. She only really ever pointed it out because she knew it bothered Amethyst.

I'm just glad to see people have been reading along w/ Silver's liveblog. He's almost caught up to Loreweaver, who started late last year and is still only a few eps short of getting to the end. I've been following both of them and I find their analysis of every episode great fun.

Hey, I was right!

Pearl is such a selfish monster.

I love how fucked up Pearl becomes the more you look back with new knowledge.

Hey kids, remember back in secret team how she'd dance and sweet talk with "Rose's Bubble"?

A Bubble that contained gem shards?

That we know what they are now?

Imagine walking up into your aunt and finding her dancing around with a jar of assorted body parts because the jar belonged to her dead girlfriend.

That's Pearl.

Jealous anger, almost killed baby Steven, danced with dead gems, almost kidnapped and accidentally killed a Steven, turned Connie into an honor guard with no regard for her own life, kept Lapis imprisoned in a mirror inside her own head for centuries, tricked Garnet into fusing with her...yeah by this point it's pretty clear that Pearl is probably the most fucked up of the gems.

But at the same time we're watching a lot of this out of chronological order, so you could think about it as her walking it back from being a monster. She does learn from her mistakes and tries to improve.
