NateDrake: Switch Final Devkits being shipped, Battery should be 3DS-like (5-8 hours)

I'll take the lower end of that interval and I would say that even 5 hours for a device that can reliable play Zelda (like Wii U isn't) is a damn good battery time.

5-8 is great. Will we be able to... switch out the battery?

Upgrading the battery in the Wii U pad was a game changer for me.

With all the Switch news and info this week, January can't come soon enough.

Nintendo really seems to have turned a lot of things around.
Though there's still some work to be done.

I don't know, but I'm gonna say "no". With the thin nature of the device, more than likely, the battery is housed within the system, sitting amongst the system board, as it would be in most tablets and smaller, thinner laptops. I doubt Nintendo would give users access to that type of hardware. I could be wrong, but as someone who's job it is partially to break stuff down and repair it, I can't possibly see how the battery would be accessible to the standard user in something this small/thin.

So do you guys think the better-than-expected battery life suggests an efficient Pascal architecture, what we all probably hope for, or an underpowered chip (what the "lol Nintendo" crowd expects)?

We have statements from Nvidia about the efficiency of the Pascal chip. Battery time past 5hours would rahter imply that Nintendo underclocks the Pascal quite a lot which would mean that we are talking about the performance of that supercharged Tegra X1 chip which was part of the early dev kits.

if it largely sways more towards 5, then no, it really isn't.

Says who ? Who plays for more than 5-6 hours per day without access to a Socket/ÜC to recharge ? Especially since USB-C likely means very fast charging as well.

If it sleeps for a week+ like Vita then I'm all for it. Sometimes I forget to charge my 3DS and its dead after 2 days.

Really? This tiny thing might have a battery lasting 5 to 8 hours? I would be more than glad if it lasts 4 - 5 hours with low brightness and sound. Anything above that is hard to believe for me. On the other hand, I would not entirely count it out either. Let's wait a little longer and see.

if it pretty consistently hits 8 though, then yeah, that would be better

bahaha, what sort of magic batteries do you think this device has. in what world is 5 hours gaming on of graphical intensive software on a portable device not "acceptable".

Some really crazy expectations on here.

In reality, my experience with 3DS XL was about 5 hours maximum. 8 hours would have only been remotely achievable with screen brightness down, wifi and 3D switched off etc

I'll take the lower end of that interval and I would say that even 5 hours for a device that can reliable play Zelda (like Wii U isn't) is a damn good battery time.

Yup. No way in hell it's getting 6+ hours of gameplay.

That top end figure, like any other device in history, will be based on ideal conditions, low usage etc, low screen brightness etc.

Too true. Anyone actually tried 3D/graphically intensive gaming on an iPad for example? Barely lasts 4 hours for me. And that's a friggin' £500 premium Apple product.

Anywhere around 5 hours would be a nice surprise for me.

USB C means it'll probably take 30 minutes to recharge.

Will be fast but not 30 minutes, at least not from 0 to 100%, for example my Xiaomi Mi5 uses quick charge 3.0 tech through type C connector, the battery is about 3000mah and it takes about one hour to charge from <20% to 100%. Considering that Switch battery will definitely be bigger than 3000mah, especially i this rumor about that battery life is true, i guess it'll take about 1.5/2 hours to charge from 0 to 100%, which is still great if we think at how long it takes to fully charge the way smaller(about 1200mha) battery of the New 3DS

That's another thing, assuming that this rumor is true, does that 5-8 hours estimation means that we'll be able to get 5 hours of battery life playing the most demanding games like Zelda, or Dark Souls 3 and 8 hours playing minor indie games, perhaps 2D? Guess only time will tell us, i hope that someone invited at the January event will be able to make a good test of battery life, since they should be allowed to use Switch both docked and undocked as they want

Don't focus on the 8 hours. That is most likely for the unit being active, web browsing and playing some indie games.

3-5 hours seems more reasonable for system heavy games.

I'm still even ok with 3 based on my current lifestyle, but 5-8 sounds great for commuters or people not near electrical sockets for large chunks of the day. 5-8 is way better. Hope it's true. 5-8 is almost necessary for people flying on planes a lot, too.

To be fair, most planes I've been on lately have electric plugs and/or usb charger ports at the seats even in coach. At least in the US. I'd expect it to be an odd event, or discount airline, to not have them on longer flights as I've had them lately even on less than 2 hour flights. I mostly fly Delta since I live in their main hub city.

With my 3dsxl I've never had it actually die during gameplay. If this is in the same ballpark I'd be overjoyed. When I am playing my 3ds every day I just make sure to charge it over night.

Wow 5 hours would be a great surprise, I've been expecting an absolutely terrible battery life so if this is true that's awesome. Should be more than enough time to last for most people's travel times until they get to a place where they can recharge once again.

Personally, I'm not worried at all about Switch's battery life, not because I have high expectations for it, but because I'm almost never in a situation where I'd want to play for anywhere near three hours without being near an outlet.

If you're frequently on cross-country or overseas flights on planes with no outlets, or a passenger on long car trips, or just hate using portable devices while plugged in, I suppose it'd be more of a problem, but I can only speak for myself here.

Holy shit. 5 hours and I would be able to charge it with any random portable battery like the ones I use to charge my phone for Pokémon Go!? Best device ever made then.

I would more want it to go to deep sleep like the vita when it runs low. Nothing more upsetting than when I run out of battery on a 3ds.

5 hours is more than enough for me. None of my Dual Shock 4's lasted longer than 3, and my old 3DS XL only lasts about 3. I'm actually a little cautious that something that powerful, even at the lowered clock rates when undocked can likely put out better visuals than any other handheld before it and the previous generation of consoles and last 5-8 hours. I'll believe when the reports come in after people get their own devices.
