This just hit me ... they're totally bringing back Guinness in Episode 8 and this Tarkin/Leia thing was a test run?
 
Well, Vader slaughtering everyone at the end was cool. Didn't care for the rest. Was worth watching once, nothing I'd ever care to see again, though.

Yeah, I thought it started pretty bad. Got better as it went. I wasn't liking the editing at fucking all at the start. That seemed to get better as it went.

These were the moments that made me smile, when we saw the Red and Gold leaders.

I must be the only person who didn't realize that Tarkin and Leia were CG. I just figured they found people who looked similar
 
Just got back from the showing. I enjoyed it. Maybe didn't nerd out as much as some of you, but I did love alot of the nods to Rebels and other portions of the SW Universe.

The Good:
Scarif - Pretty all of it. Added a ton of weight to what was done just to get those plans off world. That Hammerhead attack too was fucking brilliant.
K-2SO - Loved him as the wise-cracking droid. Story really needed a character like that to keep the story light enough to keep moving.
Side Characters - A well-enough job in getting you to care about this rag-tag bunch as they risked it all on Hope.
Rebel Alliance - Not as squeaky clean as the original trilogy might have made them seen. Welcome expansion on the lore.
Direct connection to A New Hope.
References - By god the references to everything everywhere.
Some of the CGI.

The Bad:
Most of the first half of the film - Felt super disjointed and rushed to move on to the bigger picture. The deaths of Saw and Galen felt rushed and weak without much in the way of set up for either. As well, the planet jumping made it all felt super disjointed and less like a Star Wars film.
No Opening Crawl - This alone made the open feel way less like a Star Wars film right off the bat. Took me a moment to shake that weird gut-check.
Lack of Screen Time - Everyone...and I mean everyone could have used more screen time. A better working setup from the start could have fixed most of it.

The Ugly:
Some of the CGI - You know which parts.
That Vader Line - You definitely know the one.

All in all, I did enjoy the film and think it works well within both new and old canon. I'm looking forward to how they add in Rebels to all of this as well. Last thoughts is that it did feel more like a set of three darker Rebels or Clone Wars episodes with how clean some of the story breaks were. Not necessarily a bad thing, just something I noticed.
 
Did they always say 'kill' in star wars movies?

Always thought they say 'destroy' or other similar words because of ratings, but ive not rewatched the films recently.

He's both. Episode III even has a Frankenstein reference with the way he steps off the operating table.

Anyway, considering that Disney forced a bunch of re-shoots since it was supposedly too dark, how dark was the original cut? I was expecting it to be lighter given the stories from months ago.

I thought that footage was really cool. It's a testament to how well recreated the environments and costumes were that it blended right in.

The only time I got taken out of it was Red 5s death. He was bouncing all around or something, and I was used to pilots always blowing up up with little movement.
 
I overall liked the movie. Won't call it fantastic because of the first hour. The planet jumping every 5 min was a little bit jarring and made it hard to focus on the plot. It felt like a 3 hour movie crammed into 1 hour

From the Rebel Council meeting until the end it was awesomeness. I knew it was suppose to end with a tie-in into ANH, but I didn't expect it to almost be shot for shot.

I also found funny that in my room people were clapping all the way through Vader's slaughter.

I'd give it a 7/10, with the final 40min getting a 10/10.
I believe a 2-part movie with the integration on Catalyst would make the story a whole lot better.

Oh and Tarkin's CGI was not bad, but you could really tell by the mouth movements

I think the reshoots might have been to switch up the dialogue. There was a lot of "brevity" in the film with all the kinda terrible one-liners that felt like it was actively going against what the director was trying to go for in some sequences. Particularly in the scene near the beginning of the film that's clearly inspired by Middle Eastern insurgent attacks.

"Here's this scene that looks just like what you'd expect from a bad day at the market in *insert war torn middle eastern country here* and hey look a funny robot!"

Yeah...that line was way too tryhard. They just wanted to show him choke someone for the "cool" effect, like they wanted to mimic the awesome choke scene in A New Hope. But what made that scene amazing in A New Hope is that he is chokin' a bitch who doubts the power of the force.
 
I was honestly worried in the first half of the film because I wasn't "feeling it". Then it picks up steam very quickly. So good.

On an unrelated note, I want to pitch Disney an audio drama of the events of Star Wars Uprising. That's the only part of canon that is actually unavailable at this point because the game is shut down.

Oh god Lords of the Sith was SO GOOD.
 
Just got back.

First third of the movie was clunky as fuck, like they had no idea how to get it started.

They clearly knew where they were going, so it just got exponentially better all the way up to the end once they finally got the story train on the rails.

I have to thing they could have structured the start better, or at least edited it so it didn't feel like a bunch of random jumps between disconnected locations without any connective tissue tying them together.

Overall it was still a really fun movie, but it could have been a GREAT movie, if they fixed the start.
 
So is there actually any validity to them reshooting parts of Rogue One that Disney weren't happy with? Most films go through some degree of reshoots, usually just to get pick-ups, I'd like to know if there's anything beyond speculation.

That's the kind of line I groan at because it sounds like something one of my friends would say. Like, I held back an audible groan at the theater. That tied with the force choke hand reveal just made it worse.
 
If Darth Vader came to my home and Force choked me, I'd probably thank him. Like, damn,

I went into Rogue One hoping for it to be good, but I came out feeling rather meh about it. It's hard not to get excited for Star Wars, especially with the nods and scenery and Williams's glorious score, but everything else didn't really do much for me. The writing and characters in particular just weren't anything special.

K2-SO was great, though. Struck me as having the most personality. Blind guy was cool, too.
 
Everybody is talking about CGI but the best thing about the returning characters was Tarkins voice! I think that made it a whole lot more convincing and whoever the VA was behind it should have got some serious kudos, even more true to form than James Earl Jones.

I mean on the last page their is a gif of a radically changed final action scene (Jyn isn't attacked by a tie fighter)

You can tell, since in the first trailer you see Jyn running with the hard drive in her hand at a AT-AT.
In th movie that is not even close to happening
 
I'm a couple pages behind, but I feel like some people don't understand how ensemble casts and "less is more, show don't tell" filmmaking work. Donnie Yen didn't do anything? He had something like 4 scenes where he absolutely shined. You want to see Yen wasted, go watch Blade 2 where his entire contribution is that he kicks a vampire.

And people really want to see every detail of backstory spelled out? If they did, the film would be even more exposition heavy than it is, and wouldn't benefit at all.

***by which I mean listen to the audiobook because there is absolutely no reason to read a Star Wars novel when the production on the audio version is so fucking high.

Servants of the Empire and Twilight Company are both very good. SotE was actually my favorite thing in the new canon prior to Bloodline and Catalyst coming out.

I assume you've got the Insider stories all covered as well? I'm not sure if the one that ties into RO is out yet.
