R2 and 3PO being on Yavin and not at Scariff is ok since the Corvette may have taken some detours and picked them up at some point while trying to evade Vader

That bacta tank shot was super cool, and the behind the scenes video turned out to show Anakin's bacta form after all. I want to know more about that dude that announced Krennic's visit, what's his story!
I'm wondering if maybe Vader's faster because he basically just got out of the tank, and maybe the longer he's away from it the slower he becomes.

Lola didn't work on this so it's almost certainly straight CGI.

It would have made a heck of a lot more sense to have the Rebel Ship transmit the plans to Tantive IV than have it at the fight. Wouldn't have changed the Vader scene much at all. Have him hacking to get to a guy at a computer terminal.

Giacchino has had plenty of opportunity to spread his wings, hell he did all the recent Star Trek scores. The problem is that he's supremely average and sounds very samey. He's exactly the guy you call in to score a movie in about a month. He'll get it done quick and on time but it won't stand out in any way.

Again, they are being pursued by the Empire. They know they have the plans. I doubt they would be making any stops at that point.
They showed R2 and C3PO on Yavin as the fleet took off for the final battle. The only way they would get there was if the Tantive IV took off later, joined the battle, then docked with the cruiser. But that just seems risky.
As another in here said, it would have made sense to have the plans transmitted to the Tantive IV.
Does not compute for me.
Out of curiosity, who would you have liked to have scene come in to score this? Desplat was a great choice, and I would have loved to have heard what he would pull off, but sadly we didn't get that.

Forest Whitaker's character is bald in original teaser trailer, too. I think he had hair in the opening scene. Regardless, the setting here looks like it's later in the film.

Troops running en masse is in the final cut but when the Rebels create a diversion and set off explosions around the base.
Krennic surveying the battle didn't make it in the final cut either. He never leaves the confines of the base.
Second half of the movie was great. It's the boots on the ground war film I've always wanted from this franchise and Edwards delivers on the visual front. Setting it on a beach was a stroke of genius.
First half... meh. Can definitely see the spots where Gilroy was called in. Even after his reshoots the character work is still lacking. IMO Mendelsohn is wasted. Tarkin did not need to be there at all, especially with how poorly his effects turned out. You've got one of the best actors of his generation in a dope cloak, one known for playing dirtbags, and the little time you give him he's a sniveling coward.
The Jedha insurgents scene was great though. Suicide bombers in robes...
The Jyn/Saw sequence needed to be extended as well. You get the offhand mention about how she was a child soldier and that's it.

Anyone other than Giacchino, the dude is a corporate lackey, hell didn't he score a number of the oh so memorable Marvel movies? Desplat would have been great, Zimmer would have knocked it out the park, Harry Gregson-Williams, Howard Shore, Clint Mansell, and on and on. Composers who can actually bring a score to life.

"Your powers are weak, old man." - Taunting Obi-wan.
His character in ANH seems consistent with someone who would playfully threaten an officer with a pun.

That is true. I think it fit the timing well since they hadn't shown one yet, and Vader would be PISSED at that moment considering all that had happened. That being said, you make a good point about this film feeling distinct at times (outside of some of the cheesy references)

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how that scene of Vader mowing fools down was shot? Shit looked like something out of a horror movie. Totally the most intimidating he's ever been.
I imagine certain parts were (Whitaker's section, based on hair differences and the like), but Gilroy was brought in specifically for the third act from reports, along with edits.

I was bored as hell for the first half an didn't give a damn about any of the characters. I'm sure blind guy was cool but who was he? His fat friend? Anyone? Did I miss why the guy from the night of defected? Is there a reason to care about anything? I already know they got the plans but I did not need to see it.
The action at the end was cool and all but didnt save it from that first half.
Good thing C3PO and R2D2 were there for no reason.
I think my problem with this and TFA is there are so many interesting stories they could be telling. Instead we're getting this and Young Han and Solo Boba. Bleh.

Giacchino did one Marvel film, which was Doctor Strange. Coincidentally, it had a great score.
And somehow knew that Zimmer would be brought up at some point. I find it humorous that you mention Giacchino for sounding "samey" when Zimmer is far more guilty of that. Zimmer has produced some truly amazing scores in his time, but he can fall into the "samey" trap hard.
Mansell would have been a very interesting choice though.

Exactly. That's my problem with the movie as well, the first half does nothing to flesh these characters out, except for Cassian and Jyn.
Dr. Strange had an awful, standard Marvel score. And, Zimmer at his worse is ten times better than Giacchino who has never done anything even close to a Interstellar, Dark Knight Trilogy, or even Gladiator.

Giacchino did fine in the time he was given. The film was probably still being re-edited/retooled while he was scoring since the first half is still messy. Thought his scoring of the third act was on-point and that was clearly the most finished act.
Film scores are always done near the end but it speaks volumes that Desplat left the production so late. It's very condenscending calling someone a corporate lackey while he probably had to work under immense pressure in less than ideal circumstances.

I really liked his Strange score but man I felt his score here did nothing for me. It was a disservice to the movie at times I felt, one of the first times I can ever say that for Giacchino.
It felt often too bombastic but when it didn't need to be. Perhaps it's the dissonance of no Williams for the first time in Star Wars, but part of me thinks the third act could have been absolutely amazing with more of that adventurous urgency that Williams could so effortlessly do.
I will say the opening notes of the film was playful and pretty genius.

I'm glad they didn't put in a cg luke in the movie. I love mark hamil but his face is just something graphics can't make look right. luke has looked terrible in every video game ever.
big baddy was pretty lame though, like why was he fighting them anyways. Your evil general executive dudes shoudln't get in a shoot out with the protagonist. That's good action film 101.

Yyyup. I didn't care when blind guy, machine gun guy, Forest Whitaker, The Night Of guy bit it because they didn't give me a reason to.
I'm just glad those two didn't kiss while they were waiting to die in the blast. Would have sent the cheese level through the roof.
Also I was sitting by someone who was so excited about every piece of fan service. So excited. Embarrassing reactions to R2 & 3PO, guy Obi-Wan disarmed and his bud, CGI Tarkin, CGI Leia and Vader.

Saw the movie and really enjoyed it. Agree with most sentiments here ... plodding first half then things got cooking. I think I started getting in the groove around the time of Jyn's reunion with her father.
A little surprised CGI Tarkin is not getting more guff in here. My brother and I both discussed it at great length after the movie, it was very distracting (so was the brief Leia CGI).
Tarkin is one of my favorite SW characters so maybe the stakes were too high for me. Maybe I'll like it more on the next viewing but I dunno. I guess recasting would have been more distracting but I guess I just wish they used more smoke and mirrors along with CGI (maybe just hologram Tarkin?). They seemed a bit overconfident in many of the lingering shots.
All that said, a fun and interesting take on Star Wars.

He's done exactly one Marvel movie that's been released so far, so this post is already off to an excellent start. It was Dr. Strange by the way, which had a great score.
He's done several excellent Pixar scores, including Up, Ratatouille, and the Incredibles. His Lost and Medal of Honor scores are also incredible.

How is that a good thing? A Star Wars movie without lightsabers is like a Fantasy RPG without any form of magic.
Lightsabers are cool yo.
Its incredible how much love Lucasfilm puts in small stuff like that.
