I mean they were a step above Aaron Johnson and Olsen, yeah. Not a tall order! Still the worst set of characters in a SW movie for me. I'm also bummed that I didn't like it, but I couldn't get over the bad storytelling, empty characters, jarring editing, inability to care about the drama or what's happening due to the bland characters, and the take me out of the movie entirely CG Tarkin and Leia.
I think Rian Johnson's gonna nail it in a year, though.
I was more talking along the lines of having movies just set in that era. The Old Republic to me is infinitely more interesting than the Skywalker era.
Though a side saga covering a slightly condensed version of the fall and redemption of Revan would be neat, I think.
Speaking of the score, does anyone have any favorite tracks?
Currently rocking out to "Rogue One", "Hope", "The Imperial Suite" and the "Guardians of the Whills Suite".
I have to be one of the few who felt the tarkin cg was awful but the Leia cg was seamless
I'd take anyone in the main Rogue One team over the main cast in TPM Clones, except maybe Obi-Wan. CG Leia looked a bit dodgy to me but I thought they did a pretty decent job with Tarkin.

Yep.
The comics have the writers and editors from Marvel going to Lucasfilm to talk to the Story Group about their plans for the year ahead and to make sure it all fits in and doesn't screwup anyone's plans. It's not going to be scrapped, they're kinda going ham on having a more cohesive universe now.
I thought the Tarkin cg was bad but got better during the second half but the Leia cg seemed great. It probably helped that the scene was quick but I was super impressed with it.
What do you mean by empty characters? What did you think of Finn and Poe for example?
It doesn't seem like I'm going to be allowed to like both this and TFA, am I?

I think both films are head and shoulders above the prequels and ROTJ and neither are as good as Empire.
Agree with you. Id rate TFA above R1 tho.It doesn't seem like I'm going to be allowed to like both this and TFA, am I?

I agree. I had hoped we would go beyond the Imperial March for this movie and Giacchino delivered on that. Especially with Darth Vader at the end there. So happy there were some epic vocals as I think that's just as appropriate for Darth Vader as the Imperial March. The Rogue One theme took a bit of time to like, but it really clicked with me by the end of the movie.
The Imperial Suite is pretty sweet. Giacchino easily could've just done done The Imperial March with his own little touches, but it's about time the Empire gets more than one theme.
Just got home. I didn't walk out of the theater immediately disappointed like I was with TFA, but I generally thought there was a weird clash of styles of old and new.
I really liked/appreciated how they handled the returning "old" characters. CGI whatever, with my eyesight these days they looked good to me. Tarkin, Leia, Mon Mothma, Red/Gold Leader, seeing them all ignited a giddiness in me in a way that even TFA didn't with the big names.
But a lot of the new stuff layered on top just felt like it didn't fit in with the old. One of my chief complaints about TFA was the kind of over-the-top style of the First Order. The First Order felt like a parody of the Empire, more comic-booky like Hydra. So, you kind of see this clash of old and new, where Tarkin is still a cold, calculating motherfucker, but Krennic kind of leans more towards the over-acted, overly-emoted style of TFA. Even his outfit, with the goofy cloak, is a maybe a bit too much for A New Hope-style Star Wars. He's certainly not as bad as General Hux, who is just an all-around terrible character.
More gripes about the "new" stuff, I don't think I cared for a single person in the "Merry Band of Pranksters." Jyn was just like Rey, didn't feel particularly believable as a character. Cassian was just boring. K-2SO as comic relief just completely missed the mark, none of that was funny. Donnie Yen's character and his bodyguard weren't all that bad. And Forrest Whitacker's character was okay as well.
Now for Vader. That first appearance by Vader was really unfortunate. The fact that he lives in the Tower of Sauron and that just absolutely cringeworthy choking one-liner made me want to hide in my hoodie. But that last scene.... fuuuuuuuuuuck. Yeah, you're not supposed to cheer for the bad guy, but it goes to show why Darth Vader really is the greatest villain of all time.
For a lot of the film, I felt like they were using too much Tarkin and it was cannibalizing Mendelsohn's performance as Krennic... until the very end, when we see Tarkin fire on Scarif and the look on Krennic's face as he sees his creation come up over the horizon to destroy him. I think that retroactively justified all of the Tarkin screentime for me.
I completely agree.
Can you imagine seeing The Battle of Malachor V on the big screen? I would picture it being a lot like that Omaha scene in Saving Private Ryan.
Poe is more of a side character, but still had a lot of charm to him and Isaac is great. Finn was fine for me and had enough scenes/exposition to make me care and had a great connection to the other characters especially Rey. I didn't care about any of these people.
I was unsure about the pun at first, but dude has been training under the Emperor. He's just picking up his sense of humor a bit.I can't believe people don't like the Vader one-liner, it was so fun
In fact, I loved everything about Vader in this film
Alright so I saw the movie and it was...eh it was alright. It's a solid movie but that last third act really elevates it from a meh to being good.
Also all the characters were weak as hell. Was any reason given as to why the guys from Jedha continued to follow them? After a while they were just tagging along and I really couldn't understand why. Everyone seemed to have a goal to fulfill and they didn't seem to really have much of anything.
Overall not a bad movie but I'm not sure if I think it was great. Just a very solid enough movie.
Jyn and Cassian are the lead characters and the other are side characters, for TFA characters, I don't like Finn at all, he's too caricatural, he was like the Black funny dude that we can see in all american movie and his overacting is annoying, Rey is a Mary Sue and I don't care about her personal story, I don't give a fuck about who's her daddy and what she's gonna do next, Poe is just the handsome dude that has less screen time than Vader in Rogue One but without the charsima and style...
It seems like, and correct me if I'm wrong, that the reshoots actually made it darker. So all the media reports about the reshoots making the tone lighter were bullshit right?

Two really good Star Wars movies in two years though definitely has me more optimistic about the series than I've been in a long time.
I hope Disney man's the fuck up and does Episodes I-III special editions, in which the thing that's special about them is all of George Lucas's stuff is thrown away and we get a legitimate character arc for Anakin with a believable fall from grace...
I will absolutely let Ewan McGregor reprise his role though.

I really can't say TFA and R1 are "better" than the prequels. (I don't include but keep Clone Wars developments in mind for those)
I can't say they are worse either.
I feel like both are missing a vital part, but they're different ones for each.
Hopefully they'll get it together soon.
It's like none of those movies are satisfying me 100%, and have very serious flaws I can't overlook.
I'm waiting for the droid spin-off starring C-3PO, R2-D2, BB-8, and K-2SO.

Not as long as George Lucas is alive.
