Not going to happen. Would require too many states to reduce their own political power for no benefit.

Oh, I'm sure those states would get rid of it in exchange for something...

...like maybe black people's votes could only count for 3/5 of a regular vote. That could be a solution.

I'm convinced giving all those states that much power in the first place was to benefit the slave economy.
Of course. But it is what it is, and in a modern context, a majority of states would be voting against their own interests by getting rid of the electoral college.

You are asking states to disenfranchise themselves. It will never happen.

Electing the candidate to the presidency who won the popular vote is disenfranchising states?

Isn't this one country? Virtually everyone in California and New York and half of everyone else in the country should be beholden to the electoral college system?

That isn't disenfranchisement of states? The electoral college disenfraches liberal states and the popular vote disenfranchises conservative states. Why choose the inferior system that favors the party losing the popular vote?

That ending seriously almost felt like that Simpsons picture.

"Sorry everything sucks guys, but it's all your own fault. Now excuse me while I go have some drinks from a coconut with the little umbrellas in it in paradise."

It's the idea of someone that voted for man who got smoked in the popular vote.

2x in the last 16 years the electoral college has failed the Citizens of the US. It's time to kill it.

Or you can modify it so it aligns with the popular vote more since ever four years more and more people are going to become voters in the US which makes it more and more likely that the EC and PV diverge even more since these people will mostly be in highly populated areas.

Man, I respect Obama so much, but this was disheartening...

The US needs so much more right now than a reminder to vote and for the press to tone it down

4 times in history. The last time it failed before gore was over a hundred years before.

Obama had the popular vote.

Look what I was saying was in response to the guy that said it failed the citizens of america and I am saying that Republicans don't see their guy winning as a failure only Dems see it that way. Oh and I'm not interested in the popular vote because it isn't the win condition and imo doesn't matter.

Lol by that logic the American system has been failing forever cause ppl have always had a losing candidate ...

I mean realistically we can't expect him to clean the country's mess in 30 days. He won't be here in the future to save any of us, that's on the electorate itself at this point.

So it failed every time since its existence? What is this lol

Yes, this is precisely why the electoral college exists. Because we are one country, and it's important to listen to the states with fewer people and have their voices be heard.

This time, it failed Democrats and progressives throughout the nation. Reacting brashly and moving to abolish the electoral college would be a step in the wrong direction.

When an election doesn't go our way, the correct way to react is to not change the election system so it now always favors Democrats. It's to fight back within the existing political system that has defined our nation and push for Democratic change in the states where we failed.

I hope you get paid to do this schtick, because then you would at least reasonably be able to compartmentalize it as if you were an actor and have some quiet moments of real thought.

If you have to live like this all day long, I pity you.

*millions* more americans voted for the candidate who lost. the system is a farce.

I wouldn't feel good about it if my candidate won by getting millions less votes. I'd still be saying we need to change it.

It'd be like if the cubs lost the world series after winning 4 games and everyone saying the cubs needed a better strategy. it's a farce

Of course the Republicans don't see it that way, it's only helped their side in recent history.

The point is there was no failure. I do not see it as a failure if the popular vote winner doesn't become President. For some reason others think that and imo it's silly. The EC is all that matters win that you win end of story no failure there. A popular vote win condition means a different campaign.
