Also, anyone notice the awkward quick cuts in the first half of the movie and a bit later on?

I can't tell if it was just bad editing to make them happen, but it was quite noticeable to me. Best examples I can point to was with the Death Star charging for the first time and the first appearance of Vader in his suit.

This wasn't suicide squad levels of bad editing but still.

If there's anything to go by Rian's previous works, I'm expecting a ton of division anyway regardless of its quality.

Then again it's Star Wars, so that was already a given in the first place.

Thats funny, to me since day 1 I assumed everyone would die, it was the only way making the movie made any sense to me.

YEAH ITS ALMOST LIKE IF YOU'RE SETTING UP A FULL STORY IN A WAY THAT MAKES IT SEEM LIKE EVERY CHARACTER IS GOING TO DIE TO MAKE A POINT ABOUT WAR THEN IT WOULD BE INCREDIBLY CHEAP TO ALL OF THE SUDDEN AT THE LAST SECOND HAVE THE MAIN CHARACTERS ESCAPE

I AM STILL SALTY ABOUT THIS BOOK

Really hated the bad CG Grand Moth Tarkin face. It looked so off and it looked like I was watching a creepy robot or something. They either should have limited the screen time of it and improved it more (like young Leia which was very short and more effective), or found an actor who looked more like him and made minor CG tweaks and makeup to make him look more like him.

I also didn't like the first scene with Darth Vader where he was talking with the white Cape guy. It just didn't make him seem very intimidating IMO. The scene at the end with him fucking everyone up was awesome and did a way better job of making him seem like a great badguy.

1st half with all the planet hopping wasn't all that great; however, everything taking place on Scariff was awesome. Freaking loved it. The explanation for the weakness and the characters was definitely needed, but I think it could have been handled better. But overall, I really enjoyed it. The Han origin story is definitely gonna kick ass. The score was great as well!

And yeah, CGI Tarkin was not good at all. They should have only semi-shown his face in the reflection of the glass in that first scene. I think that would have worked much better, both in a realism sense and an artistic sense. Keeps the mystery for the most part. He only should have been shown that one time, sparingly.

No it totally was, it got better but I noticed it right away, you're not crazy at all. Some scenes were weird

RO made huge strides in repairing the legacy of Vader. Regardless of how you felt about the prequels and the Clone Wars show (I personally like much of that content), it's difficult to see the character of Anakin Skywalker that we are following through all of those stories as becoming the Vader from the OT. The puzzle pieces were not fitting for me. They still felt like different Characters no matter how I tried to force it to work in my head.

With RO, it's like a reset button was pressed. You can still like the prequel content, but now we have a 2016 interpretation of Vader that reminds us of the character we've been pining for. We have the new Marvel comics, we have Star Wars Rebels which also has some good Vader stuff in it, but the impact isn't hard hitting enough. His appearance in RO was the reckoning we needed to set things straight.

I remember listening to Rian when he use to be on the breaking bad podcast. It's kind a surreal that he got the ep 8 job

Basically what I'm saying is, relax. I really want to know what the producers meant when they said his first drafts of the story were really "different".

Tarkin Cgi didn't bother me. Leia jumped out as obviously fake looking. I wish they kept her face out of it.

The space battles were phenomenal!! Finally X wings not that BS 2 engine wings from EP7.

I'm a long-time listener of the /Filmcast and he's been a guest on there I think 5 times, maybe more. Dating back to his Brick days. They better get his ass on for an Episode VIII special a year from now.

Heeeellll no.

But that's the thing - there's no effort at all. She's doing the exact same shit. It's what she's always been doing. She's been doing it since 1977. Whether this movie exists or not, she's lying through her teeth and not giving a fuck about doing it for the sake of buying time for Artoo.

What's weird is that people think the end of this movie somehow fundamentally changes what happened on the Tantive. It doesn't. It superficially changes the level of Leia's don't-give-a-fuckitude. That's all.
Well yeah, she's doing the same thing. But the context of the scene has definitely changed if we now consider she is running from a battlefield that imperial forces (surely) saw her at. And if the only way to make sense of the dialogue in that context is that she doesn't care....I'm not a fan of that interpretation. I like the idea that she cares, and realizes at the same time she has to try and lie anyway.

+1 on all counts.

they could have kept her back turned and had someone that sounds like her deliver the lines, tbqh. the cloak with the hair buns would have been all we needed.

Just got back from seeing it. Really enjoyed it. Thought it was much better than The Force Awakens was. Felt like they handled the "nostalgia" callbacks much better and the action was much more enjoyable. It did drag a bit in the beginning; but it had one hell of a 3rd act.

Only thing I could have done without was the C3P0 and R2 cameo. It was the only thing they really felt forced and unnecessary. Thought Tarkin looked great. I did laugh when I realized it's 2016 & Peter Cushing is starring in likely the biggest film of the year.

My biggest gripe with with Vader's voice. It sounded like they didn't mix it properly one some of his deliveries. It would trail off when he spoke too long. Aside from that, he was great.

Liked Jyn a lot more than Rey. But, neither one still connected with me the way Leia or Padme did. Cassian was really the only member of the group I didn't like. Everyone else was a ton of fun. The Droid is easily my favorite in the Star Wars Universe now getting the edge over R2. Looking forward to seeing again and seeing if I my feelings shift either direction.

While I thought Rogue One was better and more refreshing... does anyone else want to see more Erso (Jones) movies?

Because I thought her acting was pretty bland and I have zero interest in seeing her in another spinoff (as Disney has an option on another film). Her character isn't that interesting. After that tantalizing ending, give me more Vader that can benefit from modern choreography.

Her delivery in a lot of lines were pretty meh too

I was hoping we'd never see her. We'd just hear a soldier say that they need to deliver it to the princess. This would be followed by a shot of a ship flying away from the rest of the wrecked rebel fleet, and cut to the credits.

Also, what was the point of the mom

.I'm not a fan of that interpretation. I like the idea that she cares, and realizes at the same time she has to try and lie anyway.

Okay, now I know I did this last night.

She's lying to buy time. Never to get away. She knows she's never getting away the instant she gets boarded. It's always been that way. It's never been any other way. Rogue One simply provides extra context as to why she knows that.

You've basically had an interpretation that hasn't really lined up with Leia's characterization all this time. She's lying to buy Artoo time, and to keep the Alliance safe. The quality of the lie's never mattered.

I'm rewatching episode four right after seeing RO and it's got this new sense of urgency. Especially the death star run.

I did the same thing and it makes the opening of ANH even more fun. The blockade runner just hyper jumped away from the battle and Darth Vader is right behind them. Its nice to see that the end of RO and beginning of ANH are melded so well together.

Back from the theater. I'm impressed. I had low, low expectations, Gareth Edwards deserves all the credit in the world for proving me wrong. These characters were not the grimacing husks I was afraid they'd be.

It reminded me a lot of the old ronin Kurosawa movies, and like those pictures I think this movie should have been a lot longer. Like, three hours long. We needed more time to watch these characters interact and develop, more time to soak in the scenery. They all have individual triumphs but not enough back-and-forth. Moving from setpiece to setpiece was the same problem I had with TFA. I think the last forty minutes play so well patly because it's the longest we linger on any one location. The movie needed more of that.

So I've been hearing rumours of Felicity Jones having a sequel option in her contract. Anyone know if the rumours come from a credible source? The various articles I've read never seem to cite an originating source

This movie had some hilarious moments, droid K was hilarious and Donnie Yen's character going "Are you kidding me!" when they put the bag over his head had the whole theater crack up something fierce.

Yo, after getting out of RO at 11pm today and how depressing the ending got to me. All that sacrifice from the men on the ground and seeing all the heroes die, and the beautiful last shots of two of the characters holding each other waiting knowing they can't run from the Death Star attack.....it really all made that title "A New Hope" live up to that name making me want to watch it right away, cause damn I needed some cheering up after seeing how RO lead right into ANH.

Even if she did, either she was originally supposed to make it out or it was Disney just playing it safe. Either way, Jyn is as dead as it gets, but they are leaving her open to cameo in Han Solo or something.

I legit tried to care about the main characters, but couldn't because I knew they'd be okay until the plans were sent. I actually was more into the cape villain dude who got screwed over by video game tarkin

Even if she did, either she was originally supposed to make it out or it was Disney just playing it safe. Either way, Jyn is as good as dead, or they are leaving her open to cameo in Han Solo or something.

Yeah, if true, it seems like its either:

1) Just standard procedure for all SW actors. Better safe than sorry.
2) She made it through (or at least died in a less ambiguous way) in one of the earlier script drafts.

Yeah, my guess would be more of a prequel or cameo deal.

That said, we did see Darth Maul cut in half...

I can't even tell you guys how long I have dreamed for a Rian Johnson Star Wars film. It's a geek dream come true for me. I'm old enough to have known his name since the 80s

Full stop. You knew Rian Johnson since his teenage years to maybe mid twenties? And in relation to a Star Wars movie? Pray, tell.

So there's no way that was Carrie's voice at the end of the movie, right? She does not sound like that these days.

It was her voice. Pretty sure they just took a line reading from 77.

That's another thing - why didn't they just get a SERIOUS lookalike, and CGI-makeup everything but her mouth?

Or really, why didn't they do that with Tarkin's stand in, too? Why did they need to try to replace his ENTIRE head? I mean, I understand the desire to swing for the fence, and God Bless Em for trying, but it seems like there had to be a reason that they couldn't have matched the Tarkin face to that guy's mouth as opposed to trying to do all of it and fucking up on the eyes/mouth intermittently.

I remember hanging out with Rian when I used to be a regular at BNAT. :P

I wonder if Carrie Fisher saw the movie and was like what the fuck.

Given that she signed away her likeness during the original film and hence never made royalties off of any of the merchandising, I wonder if that stipulation carried over to this film and she's not seeing a cent from her likeness being used here. Frankly, that would be a shit thing to do to her.

So there's no way that was Carrie's voice at the end of the movie, right? She does not sound like that these days.

Apparently they completely built Tarkins vocal performance from recordings of Peter Cushing so there's no reason they couldn't get Leia's two lines from somewhere.

I'd like to know how they decide who to reanimate with computer graphics and who to recast. Why not CG Mon Mothma?

That's unbelievable. I thought the 'Rey' line from TFA was mind-blowing.
