A lot of kids gonna be devastated walking out of that theater.

Kind of sad that they had to lose Cassian and younger Alexandra Daddario but at least that explains why they never show up in the trilogy.

To think they're gonna have to go through all that again for the next Death Star. RIP Manny Bothans.

Felicity Jones is older than Alexandra Daddario.

Two thoughts from this movie:

1. How bad are the Rebel spies if they didn't already know the Empire had been building a world-destroying space station THE SIZE OF A MOON FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS?

2. Why are the Genosians already working on the Death Star in Episode 3 when Galen Erso doesn't figure out how to make the darn thing work until many years later? The Empire put a down payment of a bazillion credits and just crossed their fingers that the big laser would eventually work?

Interestingly the original trailer seems to suggest the Rebels knew about the Death Star, just not the exact nature/capabilities of it. Not sure why they changed that though.

The Death Star has been in the works since the early days of the Clone Wars. In the prequel novel Catalyst, Palpatine secretly unveils the plans to the Death Star saying they were found after the second battle of Geonosis. The Republic fears the Separatists are working on something similar so they start their own project in secret. Krennic convinces the Geonosians to help early on.

The plan was that function would follow form. They wanted to build it first and figure out how the weapon would work later. Krennic was always sure Galen's research would allow them to build the weapon. It goes into a lot more detail in Catalyst so I'd recommend reading that if you want to know more. It's a good book.

That's what I was thinking. But these problems were really created by Lucas himself when he inyroduced the Death Star as early as Episode II.

The Republic started building the Death Star during the Clone Wars after Palpatine gave the military the plans, claiming they'd been recovered on Geonosis. They thought they were up against the clock to beat the separatists in building one as the wonder weapon that could end the war. Krennic convinced Poggle the Lesser to get the Geonosians to work on it because they instinctively need to build since the majority of the species are drones, but Poggle sabotaged the work and fled, leading to the Geonosians' enslavement. They couldn't figure out how to get the energy technology needed to power the superlaser though so Krennic tricked Galen into working on the project making him think he was working on an energy program for worlds devastated in the Clone Wars. Galen figured out what was going on 2 years after RotS and fled.

Random notes.

2) I still don't understand why anyone would willingly work for the Empire. Or alternatively, why aren't more people defecting. The more I learn about the world through these new movies, the less it makes sense because at some point making an evil super weapon and killing civilians has to send up some warning signs to the most average person.

.

Donald Trump just won an election and you ask why people would make a dumb choice? The impression I get from the prequels and the separatist support is that many were not happy with the Republic so when the change of government came they rallied under Palpatine and the Empire for change. If they were against the separatists they still rallied under Palpatine for ending the war. Palpatine played the galaxy like a fiddle. The prequels may have sucked but they got his plan just right.

Imagine the scandals when this CG process becomes technologically easier/cheaper/more convincing. There will be videos of Trump-like politicians snorting coke and going on racist rants all over the place, with hardly any way of separating fact from fiction.

Every celebrity ever will be in every kind of imaginable porn.

I think I loved this movie. Sure it has its problems, more than I would like. But strangely it went from B to A on my second viewing.

I feel like the pacing issues are lessened on subsequent viewings when you know where it's going compared to the first time you see it. I've enjoyed it more each time I've seen it.

That's Yularen from The Clone Wars.

Who is also the narrator of the Clone Wars show

Wasn't going to watch this at all after TFA being utterly awful, but decided to give the franchise one more chance based on the director and the cinematography in the trailer.

Really enjoyed the movie. Possibly the best in the franchise overall. Will need a rewatch, but it was only really marred by the CGI humans and the dis-jointed nature of the opening sequences. Hopefully I'll continue to be able to enioy Star Wars in the future by staying away from the Episodes 8 & 9 and just watching the side-movies instead.

Sorry, but MENTAL .. :p

Rian Johnson Star Wars... C'mon. TFA might have been closely aligned with A New Hope but it was a fine movie. Enjoyable, great characters. Man I don't get it.

Vader ripping shit up is probably the payoff scene of the entire franchise. I honestly can't imagine what could top it.

I'm so glad they didn't go over the top with it. No flips are silly tricks and it doesn't undermine what comes later. It was really well done.

Like Doctor Strange, this is a movie that I thought was slightly above average but has gotten better and better in my mind the more I think about it. Even though I've seen all of the movies, I've never been a huge Star Wars fan but this is the first movie in the series that I've considered watching multiple times and actually makes me want to go back to the original trilogy and see the backstory behind the Easter eggs and references.

It seems like he was having difficulty moving which is expected i guess with the whole and all.

What was the point of Jynns kyber crystal necklace? I thought it was being setup for a payoff in the third act. I think they could have done something more with it aside from it being Jynns symbol of faith/hope.

Yup, the seem to be building it up to something. Still wish they'd given donny yen a lightsaber at the end with help from jyn's crystal

It'll end up powering Rey's lightsabre, as she is her daughter! It's the only reasonable explanation! It'll be strong enough to destroy a planet.

As others have said, the only reason she met up with Donnie Yen was because of the necklace.

It was meant to show the influence of the force in the film. She prayed to it right before they let Rogue One through the shield.

Just noticed from that clip posted recently.. on the rebel ship when they're downloading the data the countdown on the readout is in our 'earth' numbers (trying to find what to call it... and struggling. What the hell do you call the way we write numbers, since it's not just in "english"?! "1, 2, 3" etc..).

I thought it should be in Aurebesh or whatever it's called?!

A lightsaber big enough to destroy a planet?

Yeah. That's what I said. If it didn't figure into the plot, they should have referenced it a last time before she died to bring it all to a conckusion.

Leia was scary when he started speaking, like a Geisha doll. Really let down with ILM as they're consistently spectacular. IMO planet of the apes does a tremendous job of CG animation...I suppose that is WETA?

I think there is perhaps a big difference, the Rogue One models aren't real people, it's when the lips move is one major aspect it completely falls apart probably because it's not captured off a real persons face. Planet of the Apes is still a person underneath with that natural real life subtlety that our brains engage with. I imagine Cushion and Fisher are entirely CGI guess work which is still very impressive but will never beat a real person underneath. Same with Pirates of the Caribbean, the CGI is excellent but the real life actor movements elevate it and make it believable more than CGI ever could.

I don't know if it's even possible to superimpose Carrie Fisher's face over a real person to get that natural look back, I guessing not because they would have done it.

They did use real people. Guy Henry and Ingvild Deila were the Tarkin and Leia stand-ins.

But obviously it must have been a lot more difficult than just ageing down an actor like ILM did with Douglas and Downey Jr.

Some of the new characters in TFA were good, but stuck in a terrible movie which lost itself in nostalgia while simultaneously undermining the foundations of the very nostalgia it was based on.

No point going down this road again in the Rogue One thread, but to wrap-it-up somewhat on topic:
I felt that TFA was so busy ripping up the rule book so they could come up with new dumb shit for future films, it forgot to use the pre-existing movies as anything other than marketing material.
Meanwhile Rogue One leaned on the nostalgia a bit, but it really paid attention to the universe in which it was set and has consequently added some great additions to the Star Wars canon.

I remember hearing a rumor that Vader would not use his lightsaber in the film.

That would've been a midichlorians-level dumb decision.

The way I put it is that VII felt like Star Wars as filtered through 30 years of toys, while Rogue One felt like the material of IV but expanded to make the galaxy feel larger and more complex

TFA had probably a lot more pressure as a main title coming first after so many years. Of course, it failed, but still, more pressure than Rogue one, the spin off.

Yeah, that rumor was on the first page of this thread, before anyone had seen it.

He doesn't use his saber in the film. No sabers are used it has been said.

I wondered if maybe the source of the rumour was saying there were no light sabre battles, implying two parties weilding lightsabres against each other and got misconstrued? Or it was just a flat red herring.
