Yes, but what about the scoundrel of a smuggler who picks up an old man and a plucky kid as passengers and finds their cause and their mythology shake his world view? Later, he falls for a feisty princess who inspires him to be a better man, to believe in a cause, and to become a famous war hero.

It's all in the presentation, right?

I just re-watched a New Hope this morning and everything you said there is...shaky, at best. Princess Leia doesn't really inspire him to be a better man, but it does take meeting Leia, Luke, and Ben to change him -- because he's thief with a heart of gold. But it takes until Empire to really see this growth, which is why I said Cassian is better than Han Solo was in A New Hope.

Well, that was a let down. I am not yet ready for a full blown impression. Are we using tags in this thread ?
Didn't really like Vader's voice and the fact that fucking everyone dies in the end. I mean I know this was intended to fill a story gap without any lasting changes to the mainline but I feel like this was just a 2 hour action ride with no pay back at the end :(

The payoff was that the Rebellion survived and got the Death Star plans.

whoosh

Your reaching, Vader in the last moments didnt pause and use his force powers, he seamlessly used his light saber and force powers together while taking them down, like the prequels. Lifting guards and finishing them off with the back saber spin, its a mix of PT Anakin and OT Darth Vader. He's never been this nimble in the OT or as fast.

Well, no shit Sherlock. I mean I know its mindless complaint when watching a prequel because you basically know whats about happen but I didn't enjoy the story of HOW it did happen as much I thought I would.

Fucking sucks that they introduced all these awesome new characters, only to have them all die. Imagine the blind force guy being trained by yoda..

So what's the general consensus so far ? Do people love it ? I though it was rather all over the place and could have used a little simplicity of say, episode 7. It felt like a space opera set in the star wars universe which sounds nice on paper but when you take out all the Jedi and force action, it becomes a bit bland for my taste.

People defending the terribly one dimensional characters haha I couldn't even remember any of the characters names.

I didn't think the characters were bad, but yeah I can't remember any of their names lol.

I remember K2, Saw Guerra (cuz it's a cool name), Jyn, and Darth Vader. Can't remember the main pilot's name or the bad guy.

That would never make sense from a continuity standpoint.

I couldn't tell Leia was CGI. I thought they just found a lookalike actress who looked a bit weird. So in that way they did fool me.

It went a bit into the uncanny valley for me, especially when she spoke but it's such a short shot it doesn't bother me a ton, maybe it was the lighting/brightness (and maybe closeness?) of the scene because Tarkin I thought was far better.

(let me know if this is cool, found the scene on YouTube)

I was hoping there'd be more but this is what I wanted from Vader in this movie. It sucks that in the films we never really got to see Vader as an actual terrifying monster and why he was so feared.

James Earl Jones' voice though I thought the change in his voice was quite noticeable though the man is in his mid-80s so it should be expected, especially if you've watched Rebels. I'm not going to nitpick it, JEJ is a national treasure.

EDIT: Wait, there's complaints about Vader's movement? We never saw Vader truly unleashed in the OT, every light saber duel he was basically either toying with his opponent (Obi-Wan in ANH, Luke in ESB) or holding back (ROTJ), we never really saw Vader just fighting. I mean, yeah maybe some of the motivation for Vader being kind of lumbering was because of his being "more machine than man" and the idea that "machines are slow" ala Frankenstein's monster in how Vader moved but that idea was always ridiculous being used as anything other than the monster aspect Vader should be but it doesn't mean he should've be able to go into another gear when needed.

The "I can't even remember their names!" line makes me me feel embarrassed for someone other than the movie.

I came back about half an hour ago from Imax and I don't seem to recall the name of the blind force user and I think he was the best part of the movie. Names and character introduction were not as easy to get into in this one as they were in Episode 7.

Vader and blind force guy/Heavy machine gunner were best part of the movie.

I usually avoid these threads, but I'll just pop in and give my thoughts.

Movie was awesome! So many things I'd wanted in a Star Wars movie. I didn't think they'd kill everyone, so I was genuinely surprised when it happened. As soon as they pointed out the radio tower, I realized there was no way they'd get off Scariff :(

Jyn and Cassian both had good character arcs. I don't understand the complaints about the rest of the cast not having character development - you can only squeeze so much character story into 2 hours. Jyn and Cassian were the main characters, and they both had solid development. Hell, even Baze (believing in the force again) and Bodhi (getting over his anxiety and doing what he had to do) had nice little semi-arcs.

K2SO and Chirrut's deaths hit me hardest. I have a thing for bro moments. It was good to see the rebel fleet again, but the space battle wasn't quite as good as ROTJ in my opinion. All the visuals were absolutely beautiful, and I LOVED the Jedha city scenes. It was just so weird and different seeing the insurgent rebels and it made me think about how terrible the whole war is, seeing the ordinary citizens of the galaxy and not just the heroes. Also made me wonder how similar that scene looks to wartorn parts of Syria.

I wish they hadn't included the weird tentacle monster scene, and I also didn't like the "Choke on your asiprations" Vader line. Other than that though, loved the movie to death.

Edit: Also, I wish they'd used less closeup shots on CGI Tarkin. He was great from a distance, fell apart a little up close.

Just saw it. Abbreviated thoughts:

- Good film. Not better than TFA, but it had the stuff TFA didn't have (mainly: satisfying battles). I'm not gonna run back to theaters to watch it again, but I'll definitely own it on Blu-ray and include it in my series viewings.

- Ended up really liking Jyn, Chirrut, and K2SO.

- I'm fine with every fanservice cameo they decided to add, including the thugs from the cantina. Did not expect to see performances from some of the pilots who ran the Death Star mission in ANH.

- I'm not so fine with how much they showed CGI Tarkin, though. Was not needed for this film to work (the first appearance would have been enough), and wasn't done well enough to want to look at/hear the attempt at a new performance multiple times during key moments.

- I glad they went with everyone dying but it wasn't really necessary to make it so drawn out and gratuitous given what happens to the base at the end anyway. Death Star wrecking everyone just when they thought they'd won would have been perfect.

How so? Also if you have shit to talk don't be afraid to quote me.
I am awful at remembering names in movies and I had no trouble at all here, even when I went in expecting to. Also I was referring to a bunch of people saying it, not just people in this thread or any one person?

That's surprising then, I'm the opposite, can recall names of people and places great in movies and games but all these went over my head and were hardly used throughout the movie.

Oh that's really odd timing then making a statement like that directly below where I'd just said I can't remember the names. What ever you say then chief!

I'm bad with names in general, and this movie was no exception. Only names I remembered coming out were Jyn, Galen, Saw, Cassomebody, and Donnie Yen.

With names like Chirrut Îmwe and Bodhi Rook I doubt you're that amazed. Do they even mention their last names in the movie?

I genuinely am. They say Bodhi's name a bunch of time. Baze screams Chirrut at the end a few times.

Maybe I just have a very good memory.

Man Giacchino's music was incredibly underwhelming, I mean TFA didn't have an impressive soundtrack but it was far better than this.

Entertainment Weekly said he only had 4.5 weeks to compose it after they fired the original composer. He ain't a miracle worker...

EDIT: Waaaaaay beaten. Sorry.

I was exaggerating a little bit, but did they even say the names of blind guy, his friend and Imperial pilot?

Baze only had his name said once, I understand that one, but Baze yelled Chirrut's name a lot, and Bodhi Rook was introduced twice pretty much, once when Saw looks at his ID and when he introduces himself to Jyn on the U-Wing.

Maybe I just didn't care because the characters aren't like really characters at all? Just all there to fill a scene during the action set piece at the end. None of them really had any character or character development other than Jyn.

I know it looks like I hate the movie but I really enjoyed it, just can't get behind the characters and how simple they were.

Well it is a Gareth Edwards movie. R1 is his best film yet tho.

I think it works splendidly, the movie never bogs down. You feel that everybody is in a rush and to me it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
We know we won't see these characters again so too much character development was not necessary. I still felt for all the characters regardless and got teary eyed quite a bit.

The movie is perfect, heavy action, a little bit of mysticism , and some tear jerking, on top of being the most beautiful Star Wars to date. I about to declare Rogue One my favorite Star Wars but I will wait for some Blu-Ray viewings before I make that decision.

Yeah, Chirrut and Baze introduce themselves and use their names, and Bodhi makes sure to say his name multiple times when he's brought before Saw.

Ah okay, some of that is coming back to me.

The movie is perfect

For real? You had no problems with the opening of the film and first few acts? The cheese level of some of the dialogue "Rebellions are built on hope!" ? Actors like Forest and Mads being completely wasted and having little to do in the film at all?

The reason TFA > R1 for me is because the characters are way more fun and memorable, and much better acted too. Still liked the film though.

Yeh totally, that's why I'd put any of the other Star Wars films (excluding the obvious ones) above R1, the characters had character. The last act of the film saved it all though.

I am only speaking for me. Its what I wanted for a long time. It feels like a more down to earth Star Wars, like an actual war movie.
I guess I am just tired of the more mainline Star Wars, (other than Hope, and Empire) because its just repetition of the same themes over and over.

The name thingy is real. The original cast had simple names to remember. Same with the Ep7 cast. This one had a bunch of weird and different names, including location names. It's easy to get lost in them.

"You really do not share the same opinion as me? FOR REALZ!?!? how can this be possible!?"

Was this not just another film about rebels banding together to fight the evil empire movie though? The only thing that was different was everyone died at the end.

Yeh and I asked them why they think that? I never outright stated they were wrong for having that opinion.
