So I imagine there has been another fairly significant time skip like the one between Alien and Aliens thus Elizabeth (was that her name?) is already dead but will appear in a video she left behind or something.

Repace has been cast so she should show up somewhere.

If this set before the first Alien movie, why does everything look infinitely more high tech?

Then again, I guess you could say the same of Prometheus.

They explained it that the nostromo was a mining/hauling/industrial ship. Not some state of the art little cruiser.

I dunno.

Honestly as long as there is believable terror I'll be happy.

I don't know, it just doesn't feel like there's a whole lot of visual consistency going on in comparison with the rest of the franchise. I mean, even something likeAlien: Isolation felt much more cohesive visually with the established universe and that was set in a totally different setting.

Still, incredibly early days, obviously. I'll wait to see more.

Nostromo was a low tech mining ship, probably a really old one too, while the Prometheus and Covenant are much more high tech ships, that's the best answer there is for it really, probably best not to over think it.

Probably the cheapest $%#* they could put together without costing them a dime more

The Nostromo was only a towing ship (the one they use to land on LV-426). The large structure it was carrying was the refinery and wasn't at all a part of the ship. Also, they specifically said in Aliens that it (assuming both Nostromo and the refinery) were "rather-expensive".

It's better to accept that it doesn't make a lick of sense. He could have toned it down on Prometheus, but hey, it would be hard to accept today that, in that future setting, they wouldn't have touch-screens. But then he puts some hologram communication in there and it's obvious he gives no fucks. It is what it is. Each movie is a representation of the time it was made and how we perceived the future. Better to accept it than come up with cheap ass justifications.

A mining plant or refinery from 30 years ago would still be considered an expensive loss today if it were destroyed. Expensive doesn't mean high-tech.

I would say a Space Shuttle looks sleeker and more high-tech than many Semi-trailer truck of today. And certainly seeing a fresh newly built space shuttle would be more impressive than a Semi that's been in use for a decade.

Well said. Do we really need to see old ass TVs in order to have some believability in a sci-fi movie?

My mistake, I knew what I meant lol Yeah the Nostromo was the towing ship (Space Tugboat) that pulled the refinery.

While that is pretty much the real life reason, I still have no problem in thinking the Prometheus and Covenant are just way more high tech ships, compared to the low tech Nostromo.

Was about to say this. It makes no fucking sense at all, there's no continuity with the tech or even the look of what we saw in Prometheus. Ridley does not give a shit.

Ehhh I rewatched prometheus the other day I think some of the walls are aesthetically similar to that of some parts of the nostromo, that padded room feel.

Same could be said of Star Wars OT vs PT.

It's partly the age in which it was made (idea of the future/science fiction) but also better visual effects, CGI etc..

I do feel Alien > Aliens > Alien 3 and yes even Alien: Res feel very cohesive and believeable technologywise.

Alien to Aliens has 57 years between and there is some evolution of tech but not to the point that it's ridiculous.

Because Alien was made in 1979 and conceptions of future aesthetics were different then.

People really shouldn't look into it more deeply than this.

Also, I loved the design of the ship in Prometheus, even though it looked in no way shape or form capable of faster than light interstellar travel, inter solar system travel yes, interstellar..no.
