About to buy a PS4

I own a pro and play on a 4k tv but "much higher quality visuals" is kind of laughable IMO. I can tell a difference but it's really not an incredible difference. The regular PS4 is totally sufficient on 1080p. If anything, get a slim and a 2tb hard drive and you're still out the door for less money than a pro and have more storage.

I have a Pro with a 2TB hybrid drive and i think above all else, the hybrid drive combined with the SATA3 of the Pro is the biggest upgrade. I barely notice the visual enhancements.

Serious questions what games are you playing on your pro? Are they pro patched games? I ask because I own a pro with a 1080p TV and I can see a significant difference on COD IW but not really on UC4 or FIFA 17 just got the latest Tomb Raider but not playing until Christmas. I'm debating buying a 4k OLED but if the difference isn't significant I'll save my money

More than half of the replies in the thread recommend a Pro although the user hasn't shown any interest on it nor anyone has asked if the user has a 4k TV or any interest on buying one.

Do you have a 4k TV? Check the number of games that support Pro and then the number of games that give any improvements on non-4k TVs and make your own decision.

Edit: No seriously, the amount of replies in this thread that could be confused with a commercial is mind-boggling

$k is not the only benefit. Some games will have 60fps, higher resolutions, more visual options. And we don't know about the future when devs will implement this stuff during the actual development time.

It's absolutely worth it, especially as you'll also be future proofing yourself if you do decide to go 4k in the future.

Lol, I'm almost torn between which model to get now. I guess if I can afford to get the PS4 Pro since I do have $500 in gift cards from work. Hopefully, I can use them all either online or in-store at Best Buy/Target.

As far as games go, I've been thinking about getting Bloodborne , Overwatch and maybe Dishonored 2 for now, then next year likely for Gravity Rush 2, Nier Automata and Persona 5. I'm not that familiar with indie games and all that, but Owlboy sure looks cool.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I will be returning in a few hours from now as a Sony fan!

GO PRO BRO !
this is not an advertisement :p

If you have the funds and access to a 4k TV the pro is pretty much a no brainer. You won't regret it at all, and in a year's time when all the newer titles are utilising its power more efficiently you'll look back and thank everyone of us who told you to get the pro. Do it.

If it helps man, I recently bought a slim with plenty of cash on hand, slim just ticked more boxes for me than the pro (and I was upgrading from an og ps4) . You can't really go wrong with either model, especially as your first Ps4. Buy what you want and be happy :)

Most important step before you do anything else when you get your PS4 home, turn on 2FA.

I'll echo this, as it needs to be said as many times as possible...

I don't have too much an opinion on one vs. another as I don't have a Pro or a 4k tv. I do think that a Pro would be a more "satisfying" buy if you were able to find out a way to use it on your 4K TV (I know you said there is a lack of shelf space now, though).

Either way... I think is fine. There is a flash sale going on now, so maybe you could use any extra gift cards on PSN wallet funds at Best Buy.

That is comically incorrect

What world do you live in? You have to go out your way to get a 4K TV. And they're not cheap if you want the full HDR experience.

Actually it IS correct. Granted most of them are just 4K and not HDR or real HDR, but no you don't have to go out of your way.

If you go to Best Buy's website and look at all TVs. You'll see they are selling more 4K TVs than anything else by a large margin.

Plus most of the non 4K TVs are sub 40" and super cheap. Plus most are hold over models.

hard drive size, depends on your gaming habits, do you like to collect? do you buy a lot? do you have good internet/caps?

And yes that probably is one of the best deals, Amazon has it for 230$ you could use PrimeNow for an extra 10$ of.

Recently played through Watch Dogs 2, which is pro enhanced. It looked great on my 4k tv. But I also played half of it on my old ps4 in 1080p in another room of the house and I think it still looked good there. I don't know. The pro-enhanced games definitely look a little better, but I think it's maybe not $150 better, that's all.

I also play a lot of Hitman, which again, does look better, but still not leaps and bounds better (to me).

To put it another way, it's somewhere between the regular PS4 and my PC. It's incremental. Really not a groundbreaking (or "generational") jump in quality in anything i've seen so far. Still, I'm glad I bought one, I guess, like I said, the fast loading with SATA3 + an SSHD alone was worth it. Games load so quickly now.

Get the pro unless you are really strapped for cash.

get a pro if you have the money for it and if you have a 4K tv or are willing to buy one.

if not then get a PS4 Slim. I bought one on Monday to replace my OG PS4. i always said i'd get a Pro if anything happened to the OG one but honestly i wasn't paying another £120 for the Pro and buying a new 4K TV. especially not where I have a pretty damn good PC. i'll buy a 4K tv for the PS5.

as for storage. it's really up to you to decide. for me personally 500GB is more than enough but i had a spare 1TB drive lying about so stuck that in. i don't install every game i own only the ones I'm playing. right now i only have bloodborne/rocket league installed. the PS4 Pro supports SSD but the idea of that is ridiculous to me. a PS4 Pro here in the UK cost £350 and a 1TB drive cost at least £230. i paid £270 for the one in my PC. just stick with the stock one or put in a 7200RPM and save yourself some money.

You have a 4K TV, and the money. Think long term, and realize most games going forward are going to look and run better on the Pro.

This is an easy choice IMO!

edit:
The larger hard drive in the Pro is a blessing! My 500GB one is full!

As good as they look on OG, imagine them looking better on the Pro. UC4 has a 70% resolution increase, FFXV is checkerboarded way higher. Horizon will have checker baorded 4K. Death Stranding was running on Pro at the PSX event. I can only swoon at the prospect of a checker boarded 4K God of War.

I really wish people stop using Death Stranding as an example of why to buy a Pro. It wasn't gameplay. And am I the only person on GAF who thinks that trailer was weird as shit?

What's the best current deal on the PS4 Pro?

Probably $399.99 with no tax via Amazon. I'm considering getting the Pro on my Discover card so I can get 5% cash back (assuming it ships before NYD) and also get them to price match if there's a discount in the next few months.

I've got a Slim waiting at Best Buy for me, but not sure I want to keep it. $248 for the Slim, UC4, and $50 GC after price matching Amazon.

I own a 4K so the Pro tempts me, but the main games I'm going to play are UC4>Blooborne>Horizon and I'm probably getting the Scorpio next fall. I can't make up my mind. Pro is the better choice definitely in the long run, but I feel the Slim will do just fine until the Scorpio comes out. Plus my TV already upscales to 4K, so that helps a little.

If you can still get on the PS4 Slim deals where they were $199 to $229 with Uncharted 4, then I think there's a pretty good argument that the $200 to $230 increase in price to upgrade to the Pro might not be worth it. You're paying double for a marginal increase in visual quality.

At that price, keep the Slim and get a Scorpio down the line if you plan to only get a Pro or a Scorpio.

This. Personally I'd get the slim BB deal and roll the gift card towards PS+ for a year.

What do you want us to do then ? :p

If Pro owners say good things about the device, we get accused of being shills or advertisers. Sure DS wasn't gameplay but it was running on Pro hardware. Even if the OG PS4 version runs at native 1080p and has a rock solid frame rate, the Pro version will improve upon it.

There's a whole host of already released games with obvious Pro advantages (some supremely significant, others barely worth mentioning) and it'll just keep increasing.

All I said is I don't want people to use Kojima's weird fucking trailer to boast about the power of the Pro. It's not even gameplay.

Greatness Awaits!

There's something for everyone on the PS4. Get yourself a PS+ subscription and you'll get a decent amount of neat indie games every month.

You will need a bigger hard drive, but don't let that be a huge factor a short it's a 10min job max to swap out a drive and 2tb drives are pretty cheap these days.

If you have a 4K tv and the budget, get the pro.

I'll also chime in and recommend the PS4 Pro.

The improvements (better Wi-fi, rear USB port, optical out, extra gig of OS memory, larger HD) are well worth the extra cash.

The improved performance in some current and all upcoming games is just gravy after that.

If you want a bigger HD beyond the stock model, invest in a 2TB SSHD Firecuda.

Do you have a 4K TV and could you elaborate as to why you feel that way? I ask because I keep going back and forth.

For double the price, and the marginal increase in image quality, that $200 could be used on a bunch of games, or a bunch of games and a year of PS+. It's by far a better value. Plus, depending on the screen size, and how far away you sit, those gains in image quality start to diminish. They're definitely there, but the differences aren't huge and without doing a side by side, in most cases, you won't really know how it's different. If you plan on getting only one of the consoles between a Scorpio and Pro, just get a Scorpio next year which will be even more powerful, possibly more 4K native res games, and for all third party games, you'll get a gain as you play them on the better performing console. No reason to jump in now, especially at how much it costs you more over a Slim. I'm saying this as a Pro owner and as someone who has used it on a 4K TV. If you have money to blow, just buy everything and don't worry about it.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I'm getting the Scorpio (and probably the Switch at some point too) so I'm really just looking for a solution for PS exclusives. I think the Slim will fill that roll perfectly. Thank you.

Regardless of whether he goes slim or pro, we should all be buzzed for this guy when he comes back. Either way he'll have a new playstation and a horde of great games to get to. He never actually asked about pro or slim in his original post right? I feel kind of bad it's went this way hah.

Agreed.

I was all set to sell my OG Ps4 for $175 yesterday, then I realized that I'd rather spend that $225 difference on the Switch, or upgrading my PC card to a 1070. Just didn't seem worth it when I broke it down that way, especially since I don't see myself getting a 4K set till well into 2017. I'm also curious to see what MS is doing with the Scorpio( though admittedly, putting a 1070 in my rig more or less makes the Xbox pretty expendable).

Bro, get it at Costco so you have the lifetime return policy. I just got a Slim too there, my first current gen console, but only because they don't have the Pro yet. When they get it in and when I get a 4k/hdr capable TV I'll do a little swaparoo.

Are you sure their policy works that way? Couldn't someone theoretically just keep doing that every few years with a better console?

eh i'll buy a PS4 pro when they get around to doing a slim version. that PS4 Pro is ugly. not bringing that thing into my house.

They stopped that years ago for electronics. They have a normal return policy on those items now.

They used to allow that until people abused it too much. Now that's not the case. Don't listen to that advice.

I've decided to get my first current-gen console, a PS4 slim. As someone who is not used to the PlayStation brand let alone HD gaming, is there anything Sony fans think I should know about it like choosing a new, bigger hard drive? Anyone know of any good buy 2 get one free game deals going on? I think the best offer is Best Buy's PS4 Uncharted 4 bundle with $50 gift card.

Woah, really? Out of curiosity, what was the last system you owned?

I mean there's nothing wrong with that, but it's interesting to hear that someone hasn't had any experience with "HD" gaming these days.

If you like Souls/Bloodborne, maybe also consider Nioh? It's also got strong Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden vibes if you care for those franchises.

For indies, some to consider: Transistor, The Witness, Rocket League.

Anyway, I think you'll really love the PS4! And you picked the best time to jump in. 2017 is looking like the PS4's best year ever. Tons of variety for just about anyone.

No, here is their return policy: "Electronics: Costco will accept returns within 90 days (from the date the member received the merchandise) for Televisions, Tuner-Free Displays, Projectors, Major Appliances, Computers, Touchscreen Tablets, Cameras, Camcorders, MP3 players and Cellular Phones."

Do you see consoles listed there? No. I've asked, I've done it before. They return consoles no problem without limit.

Had the choice between getting the Pro and the Slim on Cyber Monday and went with the Slim. Then I bought 8 games and PS+ and it still came out cheaper than the Pro altogether. If your going from OG to Pro you'll more than likely notice the difference in visual quality, as someone who also entered next gen late as you are OG PS4 games look just as breathtaking. Honestly I'd say save the money and use it to buy games/PS+/better HDD. Yeah you may future proof yourself, but for how long? PS5 will be out sooner rather than later and Sony isn't going to abandon the 50million+ OG PS4 owners and focus on PS4Pro only.

truth. i'm not bothering with the PS4 Pro. my PS4 Slim will do me until PS5. sony won't abandon the PS4/Slim. they'd be crazy. i'm more than happy playing at 1080p on my PS4.

if you want 1080p - ps4
if you want 1440p>2160p - pro

i don't see the point buying a 4K tv when most games are upscaled to 4K and not native 4K. checkerboarding does OK but there is still a lot of detail left out. sure it looks better than 1080p but not as good as 2160p. i'll wait for the PS5 which will blow the XBOX Scorpio out the water.

I'd rather have an ugly console than have nearly all the games it plays be ugly. Pro ftw

lol alrighty then. not all the games look ugly and a lot of games run exactly the same. let me know when bloodborne/gta v/rocket league/destiny/witcher 3 get patched cause then maybe i would get PS4 Pro.

And Pro games are still ugly compared to PC games? If OG PS4 games are already ugly to you I dont know how you've survived without a PC for all these years because these past 3 years must have been like playing games back in the 90s to you.

No one's going to abandon the PS4 for Pro only but the difference in the versions will only increase as devs start maxing out PS4. At the very least you'll get more games rendering at native or checker boarded 4K, which already is a huge IQ difference compared to 1080p.

Regardless, there's absolutely no chance a PS5 comes out before 2020 at the earliest. You're still future proofing for the next couple of years with a Pro.

Can people please stop sugeesting you need a 4K tv to benefit from the pro.

There are plenty of enhancements already that don't rely on what tv you're using.

One piece of advice for op: think very carefully about your username ahead of time. Unlike xbox, there is little to no chance you will ever be able to change it. Once you've got it, your stuck with it!
