Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

I'm eyeing Prince of Persia, the 2008 cel-shaded one. Seems a very peculiar game. Any thoughts on it?

As a counter point to everyone else, I think PoP 2008 is one of the worst tent-pole games I've played. It's a series of extended quicktime events masquerading as traversal and combat. It's Simon Says while pretending to be Mario 64.

Vast, empty racing-track like worlds filled with non-sensical level designs that you have to traverse a multiple times to collect trinkets to move on; boss fights that are just terminally boring wars of attrition where you have to watch mini-cutscenes for every time you do damage to them. Everything is a canned animation you have to sit through once you've pressed the correct button.

The "you can't die" criticism is nonsensical; in any other modern game, you die, you go back to a checkpoint that is 20 seconds back. In this game you don't die, but you still go back 20 seconds to repeat the section you failed at, just with a little cutscene of you being saved. It's a non-issue and the least of the game's problems.

Really nice art style though.

Thanks guys, sounds good. Feeling kind of depressed right now so I'm definitely in the mood for some relaxing eye-candy platforming, not certainly up for "dark-soulish" punishment at the moment. Knew you can't die, it's part of why I said it's "peculiar". I think I'll give it a go.

The whole 'not dying' thing is such a bugbear with me. It's one of the few games that actually explains why, when your character dies, the game doesn't just end. But people seemingly couldn't handle it. They've been so trained to view in game death as part of the failure state that they can't cope without it. So ingame explanations don't work, but out of game checkpoints and reloads for when Lara Croft gets impaled do.

Okay, I ended my buying-spree with Tales of Symphonia, Titan Souls, Technobabylon, Prison Run and Gun and Resident Evil VII.

Got Huntsman: The Orphanage Halloween Edition and Corporate Lifestyle Simulator free from GMG.

I guess my biggest buys this sale was Resident Evil VII, Dragon Quest Heroes, Batman: The Telltale Series and The Secret World. Bought all the Need For Speed titles and all but one Transformers game on Steam as well.

I'm set. Merry Christmas!

I'll buy it for you on steam! I'm in a giving mood right now, might be because it's Christmas :D

Thanks for the offer! You're very kind, but are you sure?

If you like PoP you will like it

Its like Sands of Time on easy mode. Still a fun game

Sands of Time is one of my favourite PS2 games, tried Warrior Within back in the day but didn't click due to the tonal shift, then I just never got back in the series (also because AssCreed basically killed it).

Well, that's quite the harsh opinion. I guess I'll try it and report back what I think.

How long is it? Typical 6-10 hours AAA game or longer?

Yes I'm sure. Got a DLC gifted here a few weeks ago and I want to pay it forward. Pm me with your steam handle

There was this 2D game that I know came out on PS4......the main characters used a sword and he looked kind of like Geralt. Long white hair and armor. Felt Souls ish.

It's not Salt and Santcuary...

Any one know what game I'm talking about? Is it on PC yet?

Yeah, that may be true in 2016 but wasnt exactly the case in 2008.

I mean, I'm not saying you can't like it, lots of people like it and that's cool. I'm just saying why I didn't like it.

I love the art style and Nolan North is his most Nolan Northy in it, so that's fine too. I liked the enemy designs, even if I didn't like fighting them. I liked the concept of the tandem fighting between the prince and Elika (she's basically your magic attacks). I liked the Prince's gauntlet weapon thing and how they kind of spliced in a good portion of 'ninja' into his character. And the non-DLC ending was artsy in a way you don't see much in gaming.

So there's lots of cool thematic stuff to like. I just really disliked playing it.

Yeah, that may be true in 2016 but wasnt exactly the case in 2008.

I mean, the big games of 2008 that wouldn't follow that trend would have been GTA4, MGS4. The ones that would have would have been Dead Space, Little Big Planet, Gears of War 2, Mirror's Edge etc. It wasn't that outlandish.

I had so many games on my wishlist, but looking over everything I am trying to get better about what I buy as I don't have the time nowadays. I think I'm just going to end up with Darkest Dungeon, Thumper, and I bought Mortal Kombat X for some reason?

The only other 2 things I am really considering is Telltale Batman and Firewatch. Are they both worth the price being asked?

Is Abzu actually a game game, or is it one of those Journey Flower things? Can't exactly tell from the screens and trailer on the Steam page.

I never played Journey or Flower but it's not really a great gaaame.

It's really pretty, and has really nice music but it would have been pretty forgettable for me if it weren't for the interesting places it goes near the end of the game.

Late Abzu location spoilers:
The later areas are hidden tombs filled with underwater prehistoric dinosaurs that existed in real life.

The game was so/so until I got to that point, I thought it was very cool.

I can't make it past the tutorial/prologue, lol

Yeah it happend to my friend to, the beggining starts you off with not much to work with like must Strat games but plot stuff blah de blah try to be cinematic by being hard, it gets better they just tried to jump the tension to 10 right off the bat for that section.

Sure, I welcome all opinions. I can be pretty harsh on games too at times, so I appreciate your insight.

Also since rdytoroll was so kind, I wish to give something back, even though it's not much:

I wish there was a quick and easy way to just list all the available DLC for the games I have in my library.

Yes, DLC management on Steam is miserable. I think just about the best way to do it is view your whole library, open a tab for each, and close tabs with no relevant DLC. Really annoying.

Refund requested Street Fighter V. Not enjoying it.
I do think Valve's less than 2-hours within two weeks refund policy is one of the best recent things they've implemented (even though I hardly use it myself). Hope more digital services follow suit.

Any GAFpressions on Antichamber, Scriblenauts, or Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten?

I've only played Antichamber. Amazing game, lots of hours and optional content rolled into it. Fairly minimalist, with your only real motivation to progress is for the sheer satisfaction of solving puzzles.

Do you have Nuclear Throne? I'm wondering if Dungeon is the same kind of game?

Yeah, they're quite similar.

Nuclear Throne is more frenetic, while Enter the Gungeon runs are longer but more varied. Like mentioned above, it's also pretty similar to The Binding Of Isaac.

Oh, and Enter The Gungeon is 60fps.

So far I've bought Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. While it's not bad bad, I do regret that being my first purchase of this year's winter sale.

Thankfully I've heard the game is relatively short, so I should be able to actually get through it and not throw it on my sizeable pile backlogged games.

Although
running away from Tyrant Birkin was a pain in the ass, because QTE's didn't want to work half the time, so there was many deaths there.
Also weapon effectiveness and aiming feel a bit off a times. Here and there, some fodder enemies are "one to the head and they're dead" with spot on accuracy. Other times, it doesn't even feel like my pistol is hitting/damaging the enemy at all.

All in all, it's more resident evil action in my veins despite it feeling mediocre so far, but a few other close friends have picked it up as well, so there should be some fun to had there for awhile at least. I know I'm having a blast playing RE6 Co-op with a friend after not touching it for months...though he has too much fun beating me up when I go afk for a bathroom break.:( Piers default sniper rifle with quick shot even the odds. Many a time I knocked my partner on his ass with hip fire...and it was joyful.

Also both of us seem to really love blinding each other with flash grenades.
