*shrugs* I was able to care about Galen, Cassian, Chirrut, and most of all Bodhi.

Jyn was a bit bland, Baze needed more screen time, and K2 is just a droid.

But Bodhi, man, I think he's one of my new favorite Star Wars characters.

They did nothing in my opinion to make me give a shit about anyone. So when they actually died, I didn't care.

Coworkers said they were tearing up when Donnie was walking up to the button and I was like "why? because he has a catch phrase that he repeated all movie long?"

Whatt?? I felt the exact opposite.. The only thing i was thinking about was holy shit they are getting off the planet right? felt bad man..

I guess there's a whole spectrum of people... those that can extrapolate and fill in the blanks from what we're given of each character, feeling it is enough to see them as people and feel for them, and those that need more.

I couldn't say which is right or wrong (probably both and neither), but if Elton it was enough and I felt emotional for the characters having to endure what they did and for their outcome. I saw the movie twice and felt it both times.

Saw it last night and I enjoyed it. Great space battles. I know it's silly to want better character development for a group of people about to die, but You see Forrest Whitaker's for 5 minute and he's dead. I also had my hopes up for an Episode IX trailer or teaser.

It's Saw Gerrera??

Did they ever call him Saw? I thought his name was Saulgerrera.
Saw just like in the 4 episodes of The Clone Wars he was in.

Did you guys all forget about his initial appearances in the series?

He is also now in two episodes of rebels. Again very cleary named Saw. ;)

Watching the Rebels video preview of him, Saw feels like such a wasted character. You got a young idealistic fighter driven mad after discovering the most destructive weapon in the galaxy.

There's so much potential there, but instead we get hentai monster.

"LAAYIIES!!"

(what... did Forest Whitaker just sneeze? Or explode? What the fuck just happ--)

"LIES!"

(oh he said "lies," okay. That's what that was. fuckin' wei--)

"BOWGHALAD"

(Jesus he did it again! What the fuck was that? Did he say Klau Khala)

"Bor gullet?"

(Bor Gullet?? This shit is a trip, man)

Loved the movie. Though it was soooo short I loved how they finally made Vader such a unstoppable badass when he chased the rebels at the end to get the Death Star information. He ran through them like I always pictured it in my head.

Better movie than the previews led me to believe.

I've seen it twice now, I definitely appreciated it a lot more on the second run. I went into it knowing nothing and picked up on a lot of stuff I missed the second time. I think it would have helped to know that Saw was a character from the cartoon. Liked it less than TFA, but more than the prequels

I wonder if the Bor Gullet is a loose reference to Flash Gordon's infamous bore-worms.

Although the latter are not shown on screen, they are referenced in recoiling horror as a means to extract information from the unwilling.

I really liked it, although the prologue/introduction was a bit messy and the characters needed more development. The third act was fantastic.

Vader's appearance was a bit disappointing, though. He didn't have as much of an intimidating presence, like he did in A New Hope/Empire Strikes Back.

Mads Mikkelsen would have made a great Sith Lord.

I preferred it to The Force Awakens.

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Return Of The Jedi
4. Rogue One
5. The Force Awakens
6. Revenge Of The Sith
7. The Phantom Menace
8. Attack Of The Clones

For me it wasn't not being able to fill in the blanks. It was more a lack of personality, especially in Jyn. The trailers made her seem more defiant and snarky with a confident demeanor but in the movie she was kind of a blank slate with nothing for me to latch onto.

Take Fury Road for example. We don't get much in terms of back story for Furiosa but damn, I was totally invested in her character from start to finish. The only background we get on her is a minute or two story she tells Max about her past. Way shorter than the Jyn back story and it wasn't even visually told.

Rogue One was great and if it had made me more invested in the characters, it'd definitely be my #2 favourite Star Wars movie.

I liked Film Crit Hulks take on that final Vader scene. If he had been doing that to the characters we've been with in the movie, he would've been more intimidating.

Did you notice that the hats the rebels wore were like the soldiers in Vietnam?

Dang, its like a war movie whoa.

*edit* I didnt mean this as sarcastic as it looks lol. I just thought that whole setpiece was so blatant about America's occupation in the middle east
Well I mean, I knew that. I'm just surprised a Star Wars movie was this blatant with the allegory since Bob Iger went out and said it wasn't political at all.

  • terrible acting
  • scenes with jumbled editing and pacing
  • comedy bits that fell completely flat
  • tons of unnecessary actors for the sake of fan service
  • the same OLD FUCKING STORY WITH THE SAME PLOT AND CHARACTER ELEMENTS WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN BEFORE

Rottentomatoes.... 85% fresh. lol.

member berries really have taken a hold of society, holy fuck. Disney executives have to be rolling around in money and sipping cocktails while smearing oils all over each other. They probably can't believe they can get away with this. Repackage the same damn story over and over and make tons and tons of cash with no check backs from "critics"

The flood gates are open and man are they swimming. Sigh, i did enjoy it a lot more than Force Awakens though so that counts for something right?

Did you even see the movie?

Even with the great effects I like that it was filmed similar to ANH, especially at the beginning. I feel like I could watch this and then ANH and it would actually fit pretty well.

And I've watched I-VI a couple times and never had a big 'whoa' moment after ROTS to seeing Anakin in ANH (probably because the prequels suck) but if I ever did it now maybe bath tub Vader would hit me a bit harder.

I liked it, easily a top 5 Star Wars film. If we could get TFA characters with RO action we'll be onto something.

Did you even see the movie?

the marketing is strong with this one.

yes, i saw the movie with another orphan hero, funny ironic robot, mentor martyr, han solo like bad boy good guy, dark vader cameo, and everything else we've come to expect of this franchise that never stops repeating itself.

it's so mediocre, so redundant, that even the slightly darker nature of this couldn't save it from being another trip around the same tired death star. no number of reshoots were going to save this and it showed.

Lol you didn't have to like it, but why make stuff up?

Ben Kenobi was a martyr? He was the opposite.
Ironic robot? 3PO? No.
Cassien was nothing like Han Solo.
Dark(lol) Vader cameo? When was his other? ROTS? Hard pressed to call that cameo.

It wasn't a perfect movie, but it sure as hell wasnt a retread either.

One thing I forgot to mention, my screen was dark as fuck and vignetted in most scenes besides the beach. Not sure if just a dim bulb or that was stylistic, my friend said his screen was bright when he saw it. Anyone else notice this or did I have a shit cinema?

Also not sure why people are saying they couldn't understnd what Forest Whitaker was saying.

People still debating characters and how much they felt for them or not. Think it's a waste of breath at this point, it either clicked with you on some level or didn't. I can understand people's detailed arguments for why the characters were underdeveloped etc but a well acted character even if they have a poorly constructed or non existent back story can still invoke feelings from the audience. I mean we know so little about Finn and Rey in their opening scenes but their charsima and charm shine through and immediately attach you to those characters before you know anything about them as far as I'm concerned.

I also feel attached to them from the aspect of knowing what their effort leads to, from what's to come. Now should the film rely on our outside knowledge..? In the average film probably not but this is a film made for an audience of 95% people familiar with A New Hope so it's a different matter and it absolutely hits home to me from the point the Rebel alliance jumps in, united again, to help out in this effort, that everything Ramos up emotionally for me as a fan. I find it hard to criticise the movie in this respect, where others see this as a flaw.

This particular phrasing is almost like a poker tell at this point.

What is it supposed to mean anyway?

Also, people have to learn to accept that originality comes from the meshing of old ideas in unique ways, not from some nebulous either that grants us true and wholly unique creations that have never been seen, because that's impossible.

Same here. Hoping it was just the theater.

What is it supposed to mean anyway?

Mostly it means "I watched South Park somewhat recently."

Although it could also mean "I saw other people talking about South Park on reddit recently"

In this specific case it seems to mean "I didn't actually watch the movie I'm criticizing." Maybe he's scrolling around wikipedia/imdb for relevant details right now? I dunno.

Same here. Hoping it was just the theater.

It probably was. I've seen it three times at three different theaters and there was no vignetting at any of them. Some movie trailers employ it, I've noticed (studios basically instagramming their marketing now) but the film itself does not have that effect applied to it. If the image looked darker around the edges and just dim in general, it's probably the management at your particular multiplex either being cheap or just not giving a fuck.

Im a bit surprised to see GAF really ripping into this one. It's leagues above the prequels, so those comparisons sound ridiculous.

I don't see "GAF really ripping into this one". Reactions are mostly positive. Its a good movie that had the potential to be a great one.

I was reading some impressions in the middle of the thread that sounded overly harsh but you're right the general opinion is positive. The negative ones really seem to stand out is all I suppose.
