Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

you guys missed the idea of my post

I was asking if Ori is good, as in truly good. I brought up Child of Light because people said it was good, but then I bought it in PSN and all I got was a crappy, mindless, really slow RPG and it seemed people only were wowed by the artstyle and never really played good RPGs.

This is the second time GAF failed me with a recommendation, ironically the first being another Ubisoft shit - Rayman Origins.

That's why I'm asking if Ori is a really solid Metroidvania on par with Metroid games or Symphony of the Night.

I bought Ori due to literally everyone saying it was the second coming of video game platformers. I will say after beating it and unlocking everything that it's a solid platformer with hit detection issues and "cheap" difficulty added in.

People will say that it's not meant to be "easy." I agree, some parts are done well and you definitely feel like "yeah, I died and it was definitely my fault," but there were numerous instances where unless you knew exactly what was happening and what would come up, there's no way you'll catch it unless you have some seriously good reflexes. The controls and jumping can also be a bit finicky at times, but I would say the majority of the time it controls well enough.

It's not a bad game, I still would recommend people to play it because the art design is absolutely mesmerizing, but definitely don't go in thinking it's as amazing as people hype it up to be. It has its flaws.

I'll buy the Ori Definitive Edition once the sale ends and I can use my voucher to get it for $5...only bought 3 things during this sale period and none of them were through Steam

RE4- that QTE after specific parts where you have to mash X to keep Leon from one-handing his dick off a cliff. That shit seems completely random whether it works or not, on 60fps. Sometimes I hold "up" just to see if that helps.

the amount of content in Paint it Back is ridiculous

No Man's Sky bought. 23.5€ on GMG compared to 35.99€ on Steam.

Anyone wanna meet up on a planet? :P
Don't care the slightest about that feature not making it into the game

I really enjoyed Not a Hero. I'm kind of surprised it didn't catch on.

Always looked interesting to me and is super-cheap, so couldn't resist! It's Hotline Miami-ish right?

oh god I didn't realize you could get more cards each day with the discovery queue :(

such fail

Oh god, I knew this but totally forgot it since the first day! Thanks for reminding me.

Huh, so you wanted us to validate your bad taste? Good to know, I'll ignore your questions in the future :P

(just kidding, I won't ignore you for disliking good games)

But exaggerations aside, CoL doesn't really scream good game. Seriously. Is it because people are aching for a good Paper Mario game that they'll settle for it?
I bought it for the art style. I ended up loving it for everything else, plus the art style. It shouted "great game" to me and was even better.

Did you want people to lie to you and say that they thought Child of Light was bad? That's not how recommendation and preferences work.

I don't know what to do with this sale, I haven't bought much and I have like $72 in my steam wallet...

so far I've bought DQ Heroes when it was 10 euro on the squeenix store - played a little, it's fun, but I like DQ so I enjoy it just because of that

grabbed Judge Dredd gamebook that Stump shilled, haven't played, but had to get it before they take it away..

bought Rusty Lake Hotel and Roots, playing the Cube Escape games first lol

bought OmniBus and Okhlos and both are pretty fun (from that Devolver complete your set bundle)
grabbed Raiden 3 haven't played but it was cheap and I didn't own it..

bought The Turing Test and finished it, I enjoyed it but it doesn't really get that challenging until the end, would buy a DLC expansion that had harder puzzles. Good game overall though, but short.

bought Valley, haven't played yet, will probably do soon.

oh I also bought both PoE expansions and the Stellaris dlc from GMG..

now I am lost as to what to buy next

edit: feels like I havent bought much but maybe I did? lol

edit2: I still have the hidden gem thread open in a tab and haven't looked yet...

Tiny bit. It's a silly, arcade-style game. You get a choice between a bunch of characters with different play styles, and the game really opens up once you begin to master it. Each level comes with 3 side missions, and they're a lot of fun to complete once you learn the level.

or you can buy both of us Melty Blood.

oh shit son

I figured out why Dishonored wasn't showing up in my Library. For some reason it defaulted to "Hide in my Steam library." 2meta4me, Bethesda.

People should call it a platformer.

There's that PSN game I enjoyed, Outland. It is a platformer but people kept calling it a Metroidvania game.

Metroidvania defines the structure of the game, not the main gameplay mechanics. The structure could be summed up as "traversing huge interconnected worlds with relative freedom and possible sequence-breaking, having to backtrack and unlock new areas and items with new powers"

The gameplay mechanics and the genre change accordingly; all of these are "metroidvania" games as far as structure goes, but with different twists:

- Outland: action platformer (with a sprinkle of bullet hell)
- Guacamelee: beat 'em up / platformer
- Metroid: shoot 'em up / platformer
- Metroid Prime: fps
- Castlevania: hack 'n' slash / rpg
- Infinitely Twisted Shadow Planet: arcade flying / shooter
- Kirby and the Amazing Mirror: puzzle platformer / action platformer
- Ori: platformer

As for your original question about Ori, it's worth the price and it's several leagues above Outland (which is kind of an average game), in both artistic and design choices. Hope that can help.

Guys sell me on hyper light drifter. I have $20 in my steam wallet and was wondering what I should get. I have ABZU in there. Was maybe thinking about HLD and Batman AK? Maybe?

Tyranny is really good. I don't regret picking it up at all. It's cheaper elsewhere, but I had steam money, so I bought it through STEAM.

My impressions from earlier in the year
A cataclysm has occurred, and in the aftermath, the Drifter arrives. Armed with an energy sword and gun, draped in a flowing purple cloak, he soon finds himself afflicted with an otherworldly corruption and embarks on a quest across the four corners of the land to cure himself. All this is presented to you wordlessly, through cutscenes and vignettes that leave it up to you to understand and interpret the story.

This elegance of the subtle storytelling also weaves its way into the world. Each area is one of gorgeous pixel artistry, lavish details, and vibrant colors: the gargantuan remains of titans now choked with flora, technological ruins, windswept peaks, bustling town square, dim subterranean tunnels. An abstract map guides you through these environments, but it's the sense of discovery and mystery and allure of secrets that drives you onward.

Hyper Light Drifter's beauty is only surpassed by its danger. A deadly menagerie of foes await, from avian mages that unleash devastating short-range lasers and lupine samurai that teleport-dash towards you with their blades to shuriken-armed toads and towering crystalline beings. Innocuous flowers erupt into hulking beasts, heavily-armed creatures fire bullet hell-esque volleys of projectiles, and relentless bosses unleash multi-tiered attacks that test your evasive prowess.

To the new Drifter, this onslaught of enemies can seem overwhelming, as groups encroach from all angles, as bullets and lasers threaten to chip away at your precious five hit points. But soon the lessons become clear. Never slash mindlessly, but with confidence. Always watch for enemies' telegraphs and tells. Shoot from afar to even the odds before you engage up close. While Hyper Light Drifter's combat is fast and fierce, it isn't hectic. Precision, timing, carefully timed dodges, using the environment to split up or funnel groups, prioritizing enemies, knowing when to slash or shoot or when to break away and heal. Every encounter is manageable, every enemy able to be slayed. Once you've mastered the rhythm and pacing of the combat, clearing areas with expert evasion and combos of blade and bullet never ceases to feel satisfying.

But perhaps skills alone aren't enough. As you defeat enemies and explore, gold credits allow you to purchase new abilities and weapons from shops. The multi-dash lets you flank around ranged enemies with ease; a shield lets you absorb several bullets, A grenade gives you a powerful area-of-effect attack that can clear entire groups when used at the most opportune moment. A charged attack can decapitate multiple enemies with a single strike, while a jabbing blow can stun a foe for a few precious moments. Following your melee attacks with a point-blast shotgun blast can devastate, while a rifle can snipe lurking enemies from a distance. Each of these upgrades expand your moveset in useful ways, giving you myriad ways to handle any battle.

And yet even with the intriguing environments and fast punchy combat, it's the little details that can make a great game, special. The way you can sit down at any time to just relax and admire the environment. The snowy footprints and pools of blood you leave in your wake. Your cloak flying and fluttering with each strike. The fancy sword flourish the Drifter performs after a particularly challenging battle. The dust-throwing skid at the end of a dash. The charming animations of town NPCs.

Hyper Light Drifter is rife with secrets to be found and hidden areas to seek out, behind camouflaged paths and invisible walkways. New Game Plus offers a new challenge, carrying over your upgrades but reducing your health, a true test of your combat skills. A first playthrough might take around 6-8 hours, but much more awaits your Drifter.

There are a bunch of games I'm considering but only because I got some Steam cards. If it was my own money I don't think any of the discounts are great enough.

Considering:
- Final Fantasy 6-9.. although I heard something about an anniversary thing? Maybe I should wait.
- Trails in the Sky
- Subnautica, even though I typically don't like survival games.
- The Binding of Isaac : Rebirth + Afterbirth Bundle, I'm worried I might hate this though. Permadeath is very hit/miss for me in terms of whether I like it or hate it. I like Let it Die if that matters at all.
- Life is Strange complete
- Transistor, even though I don't like Bastion.
- Ori & The Blind Forest

Any opinions on which are worth biting on? I have $40 to waste. Perhaps I'm better off just holding onto it for the future.

Did it get rid of that God damn tree level? :p

Thankfully no, because that level is awesome :P (but fucking hard compared to everything before it).
But they made it so that you can now backtrack to the few areas that were closed off in the original after going through them, incase you missed a collectible there.

Trails in the Sky is everything you love about classic JRPGs minus everything you hate about them.
It also has one of the best leads in any rpg.

Estelle is amazing.

- Final Fantasy 6-9.. although I heard something about an anniversary thing? Maybe I should wait.

Next year is the 30th anniversary of ff and there are rumors about a pack being launched to celebrate, at least for ps4 (and maybe sub 5€ in steam? one can hope... i just want ff1 and 2 :( )

Life is Strange is definitely worth playing imo. You can play the first episode for free to see if you'd like it:

HLD is an excellent, fast-paced hack & slash, with lots of secrets to be uncovered, a masterful soundtrack and a great art direction (even though pixel art is becoming overused in famous indies nowadays). A game deserving of anyone's attention. However it's very focused on what it does, with little to no variety as far as the action is concerned: you do the same things throughout the whole game; it may get stale if you don't like the combat a lot, since enemies types aren't that many and same applies to the traps and obstacles.

The parallels with the first Zelda are generous: Zelda is a much more varied and mentally challenging game. Also the parallels stop at the overworld, as there's nothing like the dungeons the Zelda series is famous for in this game.

I loved Transistor where Bastion left me flat. Transistor starts very abruptly and you just figure out how the game works naturally, but the art and music is amazing and the real time combat where you use pausing as a weapon is just genius. One of my favorite games in quite a while.

The Binding of Issac is a lot of fun. There's a good feeling of progression in the game despite the permadeath, and it's not punishing.

I'd say cut the list in half and just get enough to keep yourself busy for a few months.

towerclimb-585x300.jpg

Towerclimb - $8.99

Just chiming in to say, if you love fucking getting destroyed -> mastering a game. Towerclimb is on sale for like $9 and it's as good as a Spelunky successor as I was expecting. It's fucking amazing, and although it's not quite as dense in ass clenching moments from Level one, it's just as consistent in vulnerability, it has AMAZING music, and you clench like 10x as hard when you start to get to the hell equivalents/start getting far into the Yama run equivalents. There's some advanced movement mechanics that aren't required but feel so great when you pull them off as well, I love this game.

Fuckin worth it.
